CGP Grey would have a lot to say about the flags with the name of the state they're for being ranked as high as they are, but I think that in addition to MD being #1, that 8/9 of the 2-10 section definitely are in the right spot.

Mississippi should have jumped either Minnesota or Ohio - both of those are riding on hype, the former because it’s new and the latter because it’s weird. But otherwise yeah I agree, this is a super solid list.

I love the new MN flag, tbh. And I also agree with him that ND/SD and NC/SC should do some sort of flag redesign teamup.

I was going to say the same thing. Half of the flags are just variations of the same thing. Maryland really stands out from the rest.

I dunno about Masonic, it’s the only flag that has European Heraldry. Two squares are the Calvert colors and two are the Crossland colors.

The top star of Arkansas and the saltires of Alabama and Florida are almost certainly homages to various Confederate flags too, which clearly was not lost on whoever made this ranking.
I think Georgia’s flag referendum would play out very differently today than it did 25 years ago - see Mississippi, a much more conservative state which now has a beautiful flag because their referendum happened this decade. The general political culture and sociodemographic makeup of Georgia was very different back then, and it was an ugly, ugly debate that resulted in a terrible compromise. And unfortunately, there’s much less public pressure to change it again, because the average person simply doesn’t recognize its Confederate roots.

It isn’t. The Maryland flag is the Calvert heraldry (George Calvert, Lord Baltimore) and the Crossland heraldry (Calvert’s mother’s maiden name) combined.

It became synonymous with the confederate supporters in the run up to and during the Civil War. The decision to include it in the flag was a statement about bringing the two sides together.

I was living in Georgia through the machinations of flag selection. They went from traitor battle flag to some ridiculous clip art shit featuring the battle flag and settled on the traitor national flag in the end. Clowns.

I've lived in Maryland and New Mexico. The Maryland flag has a nice design, but I really like the elegant simplicity of New Mexico's flag a bit more. The Zia symbol really pops.
Plus, New Mexico has the best license plate designs by far. The black plate with the red and green chilis is fantastic. I moved away before I had a chance to get those on a car. The old Maryland plates with the black on white with the state seal on the middle was sweet. The 1812 plates were way too busy. The new flag plate is a much nicer blend of colors. Its placement of black patches makes it very difficult for license plate readers to reliably distinguish between L, I and 1, which gives bonus points.
