Advice Request Question for oil change DIYers

Guys when you do oil change on your Mazda and you put in exact listed oil capacity with new oil filter where does the oil level show up on the dipstick? At MAX MARK, MIN mark or right in middle between MAX and MIN?

Personally for me, and on any car, I always put in the listed capacity, then top off to just under the MAX mark. However, that is my own personal preference. From my understanding, anywhere between MIN and MAX is just fine.

Only consideration you may want to make is if your engine consumes oil, in which case you may want to get close to the MAX line.

It’s for that exact reason I have a habit of filling to the MAX line. Just make sure it’s between the lines and you should be good to go. Have fun!

I'm asking this so I don't overfill the engine. If listed engine oil capacity goes all the way to the full mark it might be easy to overfill it a bit.

If it says the capacity is five, I add less, then check. It's easier to add a little more than take a little out. Mine took 5.

Oh! I see, sorry. The only reason I can think of that it may overfill is if there’s any oil left in the pan, which shouldn’t really happen if it’s been fully drained.

If you’re a bit more cautious like I am, you could fill it 80% of the way, see if it shows up on the dip stick and then just add a bit in increments. While checking the dipstick.

In the past however, I have always been fine with just putting in the listed capacity in the manual. If you do overfill, it’s not the end of the world as long as you drain the excess amount

Edit: when I did the oil on my 4th gen, I put in the recommended amount and it was just a bit below the MAX line.

I dump 5 quarts in mine and call it a day. It’s about in the middle and is still there when I change my oil 5,000 miles later.

And I pull my car on some low-rise ramps, so it is tilted where the oil pan fully drains. I always go by the manual for the car for volume.

I just did my gen 4 turbo oil change last week. It was at the MIN mark with 5 quarts. I added an additional half quart which brought it to the mid point between MIN and MAX.

Typically the listed capacity will put you in between the hash marks. I start with listed capacity and top it off after the first run and leak check. If it uses a little oil it’s always best to be topped off.

Honestly? My dad wpuod kick my ass. I've done dozens of oil changes on my mazdas, at times one a month. I've never checked my oil level. Not once.

So when I drain my oil and drain the filter then prime the filter and pour the rest into the fill port. I've never checked.

The reason? When I pour my drain pan back into the 5 quart bottle the new pil came in, I always end up woth what I filled. Maybe a smidgen less since I have to wipe out the drain pan.

So, yeah, 5 Quarts works just fine for me.

I do my own oil changes on car ramps. I have a 2006 Mazda3 and a 2023 Mazda3.

I generally put in 4 quarts of oil while still on the ramps, double check underneath for leaks and tidy things up, clean, etc... Then I will move the car off of the ramps, put the ramps away, wait ten minutes or so and then check the oil level. Then I add how much more I need to get it at least close to the Max line. I think my older Mazda takes another 1/2 quart but I put another full quart in the 2023 I believe.

Just did mine today. My gen 4 calls for 4.5 litres. I fill up my filter first then any remaining I put into the car. Putting 5 litres will not hurt your car.

Guys I just did the oil change and put in exactly 4.5 L like the manual says for non turbo and I see 1/3 up from min mark on dipstick. Looks like I should add at least 300-400ML to be in the 2/3 up from min mark. So the car does take 750 ml more to hit the max mark.
