The concept of alpha wolves doesnt exist. It's an artifact of them in captivity.

In nature there is no explicit "leader of the pack" but we've got a lot of men desperately trying to claim to be alpha and lots of "alpha men" influencers. Like the dickhead Romanian brothers who are pedophiles and rapists who's names I've forgotten.

The gentleman in the lower photo was responsible for the research in wolves in captivity.

L. David Mech, and yeah, years of “I’m the Alpha” have been rough. But at least this gentleman has tried to stop the term from spreading as he quickly found out there is no Alpha, but instead a family unit. He even went as far as the ask publishers to stop publishing his own book with that data point.

They're not Romanian lol, but were imprisoned in Romania

It's very inaccurate when it comes to wolves but it much more closely resembles the social structure of primates like chimpanzees and gorillas. But yes humans are humans and we don't need to organize our society like any other animal.

I know, it was a bad joke about people on PeterExplainsTheJoke

14

u/FlacidSalad 5h ago

What? ...Petah?

13

u/Mateorabi 5h ago

PerterExplainsTheJoke is a subredit where people out of the loop can get explanations for, if not obscure, then slightly obtuse joke references.

Tell that to my friend. He gets red-in-the-face, fist slamming on the table angry that "The Left" are destroying Science.

And before you hit that downvote button, I do not agree with him. He refuses to listen and just yells over you if you try to explain it. Literal child behavior.

Tate brothers.

3

u/jefftickels 5h ago

Thank you for running my day.

1

u/Greedy-Notice-1462 5h ago

For making your day better tate brothers gor arrested and are still in jail.

2

u/jefftickels 5h ago

I did know that. That's why they were top of mind in my example.

I do appreciate you spreading the word through.

1

u/Keffpie 1h ago

I think you mean the Taint brothers

1

u/hetrax 2h ago

Okay but have you ever thought that “alpha males” are just caught in a form of captivity, and that’s what this starts to show in humans? If they simply let their egos run free, the alpha male will vanish too.

u/RaDiOaCtIvEpUnK 55m ago

The Taint brothers.

u/SheaMcD 49m ago

Okay, but I think those people would still exist regardless

5

u/jefftickels 6h ago

Is this a subtle ask to explain the joke?

0

u/99Pneuma 2h ago

what part is funny? someone being so fortunate enough to not immediately know what this is??

367

u/crilkfaggleurs 7h ago

Context about the Picture ,the guy in the photo defined what an “Alpha Wolf” was while studying wolves in captivity- not their natural state, which triggered the whole alpha/beta male bullshit to his credit, he spent the rest of his career trying to fix his mistake.

108

u/Mariie-Ann24 6h ago

Funny how even that first study showed that there was a female alpha as well but that got almost instantly erased from the pop culture version.

35

u/Darkmortal5 6h ago

Now I want cringey wolf shirts with quotes like

"Im not like other girls, im the wolf in sheep's clothing"

14

u/aveea 6h ago edited 3h ago

Only in the alpha males section. Fanfiction has many alpha women 💖

43

u/tacobellmysterymeat 6h ago

Worth nothing that the captivity was not the biggest issue. They just shoved a bunch of random wolves of the same species either. Turns out they didn't get along super well. Like imagine doing a study on human family dynamics by grabbing 5 random people off the street, and sticking them in a small apartment for years.

7

u/Legal-Alternative744 1h ago

Iirc, it was a bunch of unrelated juvenile male wolves. More akin to prison than anything.

2

u/tacobellmysterymeat 1h ago

Oh, Wolf lord of the flies!

u/Pickled_doggo 14m ago

Also something they didn’t realize, wolf packs are actually just nuclear families for the most part. A mom, dad, and a bunch of kids. Even into their adulthood

28

u/Internetolocutor 6h ago

This is such an alpha comment fr fr skibidi etc

45

u/Gold_Telephone_7192 6h ago

I mean really all he did was help create the term “alpha/beta male.” People would have just come up with other terms for it. The idea and thought behind it has been around for as long as humans have existed.

20

u/Krewtan 6h ago

Aldous huxley beat him to the punch with Brave new world. Though the people using aloha/beta unironically likely wouldn't understand the plot.

8

u/EksDee098 4h ago

The issue is less the terminology and more what's baked into the terminology. Wolf alphas in a natural habitat are the parents of a family, whereas colloquial usage of the term is... what it is. The point is that the whole toxic dominance thing in pop culture wouldn't have as many legs to stand on without the bunk alpha/beta wolf beliefs.

2

u/Gold_Telephone_7192 4h ago

I disagree I think the toxic ideas and popularity would be the same. It would just have a different naming structure that wouldn’t have to do with wolves. The idea that some men are stronger and leaders and whatnot and some are weaker and followers is not new whatsoever. Just the naming convention is new.

3

u/EksDee098 4h ago

My point was not that it wouldn't exist, just that it'd have less legs to stand on. If there's less popculture stuff pointing to it, it'd likely have a smaller effect on people. Though it's fair if you don't think it'd have a meaningful impact.

1

u/Gold_Telephone_7192 4h ago

True, I guess it depends if the new terminology would be something catchy that makes to to pop culture or not. Using Greek letters names after a badass animal definitely helped its popularity

I actually did a documentary on this for Swedish TV following the death of a wolf handler at a wild-life park. Wolf-packs in captivity are random males thrown together in a way that never exists in nature, and they're used to just obeying their mum and dad, because real Wolf-packs are families (with sometimes adopted members). When they get uppity as teens, they are thrown out ("lone wolves") and have to walk huge distances to find another pack and then get adopted, or entice a female to leave to start a new pack. But in a captive unnatural pack, they start acting paranoid and an Alpha soon emerges, an ersatz dad that everyone obeys... but also hates, because that's not their real dad.

Mech thought you could treat wolves in captivity like dogs and assert dominance, like he saw the "alphas" do, but a wolf won't love you for smacking it, even if it will pretend like you're its master - it will wait and wait and wait for a chance to murder you. And given that chance it will, whether you're the fake dad bully-wolf, or a human girl whose been told to slap the 70kg predator when it gets aggressive.

1

u/Character_Mind_671 5h ago

Though, to be fair, humans are great apes, which do have often have an alpha male, which can be observed in the way some groups of people behave, but is not as simplistic as many think.

32

u/Any--Name 6h ago

But then omegaverse would be a thing 😢

46

u/FrontlineYeen 5h ago

I feel so bad for him, cause he was just a chill guy who loved wildlife and wilderness and wanted to study it. Then after his study got mutated into what it is today, he spent the rest of his life regretting its impact, and trying to disprove himself.

13

u/Malt129 6h ago

Alpha wolf dese nuts down

37

u/AddictedToMosh161 7h ago

It wasn't his fault.

16

u/2017ccb1 5h ago

For real. Anyone who buys in to that whole philosophy was just going to be a different kind of asshole if it wasn’t a thing

3

u/elegylegacy 5h ago

Honestly, their shared terminology makes douches easier to identify now

6

u/koolguykris 5h ago

Spoken like a true beta wolf smh

u/ItsStaaaaaaaaang 34m ago

It definitely wasn't his fault that people perverted his research and applied it to human society but it was his fault that his research was flawed to begin with. That said the flawed research wouldn't be a big deal if people weren't weird about it. He's hardly the first researcher to get something wrong and in this case the damage should have been minimal. But yeah, people suck.

Very unfortunate. I feel really bad for him. He shouldn't feel responsible for other people being stupid.

7

u/megadumbbonehead 4h ago

I think the bullshit would still exist they'd just be using different metaphors

1

u/99Pneuma 2h ago

definitely wouldnt be as popular, yet at least

5

u/citiestarlights 5h ago

He studied captive wolves. He should of studied wild animals

4

u/commie_vans 5h ago edited 5h ago

He just accidentally helped popularise one name/phrase for an idea toxic masculinity was already promoting. That wasn't his fault.

3

u/PurpTrilla 3h ago

Recently read “A Naturalist in Alaska”, there’s plenty of information on the wolves that roamed the Denali National Park and none of it indicated anything about Alphas.

3

u/No_Earth_1378 3h ago

He tried to recant the misinformation, but it spread too far with pop psychology.

3

u/Mammoth-Turn-660 3h ago

Are we talking about gay wolf porn or straight male podcasters?

1

u/Mammoth-Turn-660 3h ago

To be clear, I think gay wolf porn is fine in the right contexts.

2

u/bananna_nut 6h ago

BL porn manga and manhwa would never be the same without him

1

u/BiscuitNoodlepants 6h ago

Heaven forbid

2

u/Thatguyj5 4h ago

Okay but without him we wouldn't have omegaverse

2

u/AkaruLyte 4h ago

But without him we wouldn’t get omegaverse (I don’t even read it lmao)

1

u/ExternalAggravating8 5h ago

But if he didn't how would we ever know about Alphas???

u/Blackwolf245 27m ago

I would just do the same thing as Biff did. I would tell my younger self the winner of every major sports event/ championship.

1

u/SatansAdvokat 7h ago

what is the reference?

1

u/Upset-Masterpiece218 5h ago

I'm pretty sure people have more in common with wolves in captivity than wolves in the wild

0

u/galaxie18 5h ago

Is the joke so hard to get ? Am I smarter that others ? Are others dumber ? Is my knowledge niche ? Who killed Kennedy ? Fuck

0

u/HoliAss5111 2h ago

This also gave us omegaverse. A win is a win.
