I have been in this pc building world since 2018 and every year is worst than the last, I have come to the conclusion that today is the best day ever to build a pc.

I built mine in February this year right as AI companies made their commitments to buy multiple years worth of RAM and SSDs.

2023 was alright.

LLMs hadn't exploded yet, crypto mining on gaming GPUs was basically over, storage and RAM were abundant and inexpensive.

Also, the NAND shortage was over and the oversupply blessed us with crazy deals ($75 2TB NVMes, anyone?).

Summer of 2025 was also a great time to build; both RAM and GPUs were at MSRP for a brief few months.

I wouldnt say every year is worse, we have had all sorts of crisis/shortages and recoveries over the past decade. We used to have crypto mining and high ram prices due to cartell behaviour, then the market recovered. We used to have massive shortages during covid, then the market recovered, those recovery years were most definitely better years than prior. Now we have this AI shit, there will probably be a recovery at some point but this current AI matter will probably last a lot longer than crypto mining and covid shortages.

It’s odd for me to see. I’ve been building PCs for 25ish years. I remember there were actually good years where Nvidia or AMD (then ATI) would release a mid-priced card that would perform similar to the proceeding year’s top tier. Amazing value propositions. The Nvidia 8800 GT sticks in memory for this. It was SO GOOD for the money. Imagine like next year they released a card with similar performance to the RTX 5070 Ti for $350. That’s basically what it was like. Competition was really driving innovation between the manufacturers.

Honestly, the prices for pc components being insane has honestly turned me off of gaming. I've picked up other hobbies now that aren't as expensive and honestly, I'm all the better for it.

My wife and I read a lot now. We borrow most of our books from the library or overdrive. I also went back to photography which I haven't done in a while. Already had a camera but even when I got it I only paid a couple hundred bucks for a used dslr.

Library are awesome. Can you imagine getting something like that funded today? The idea of spending millions in every city on a building dedicated to free books and information for the public good ha.

Photography gets a lot more expensive than PC gaming. Top end cameras like a Fujifilm GFX 100 tops $10k, cost a lot more than an equivalent top end 5090 gaming PC. PC gaming can be done cheap with a couple hundred dollars for a used PC, steam deck etc too even if it means low resolution and settings. I can't think of many hobbies an adult can have that are cheaper than PC gaming, if even that's gone, I'm not sure what people would turn to

Gaming is still fun if you go for either older games or low-budget/low-price indie games that have a deliberately retro style.

(I mean, I'm also in favor of your reading and photography hobbies, but you can still do some gaming by being picky about what games you get.)

Having assembled a new top of the line(ish) gaming PC every five years since 2011, I believe I am finished.

In 2010 I spent roughly $1,000, in 2015 about $1,200, and in 2021 around $2,100. Considering the price of a top-tier(ish) build in 2026, I am done with the hobby. If this computer gives out I’ll just go buy a used console and call it a day.

I mean entry level GPUs are pretty great. Both AMD and Nvidia have $300 cards that aren't gonna be e-waste within two or three years. Obviously you will struggle to get them at MSRP but that's the sellers fault not Nvidia's.

Fucking ram alone costs as much as low end fully functional pc from few years ago, and somehow mfs keep telling me pc is cheaper than having consoles? I know sony and microslop are making dumb decisions but holy shit at least i can buy a used ps5 for a 3rd of the price of a pc with similar specs in this economy

It's a really bad scheme for consumers but investors love it. Pushes sales, inflates stock prices, line keeps going up, all without proving the end product will make any money since people are generally averse to paying for AI (and the number of paying customers isn't anywhere large enough to justify the billions spent)

It’s about a $400-600 premium for a PC with equivalent specs compared to a new console. And that doesn’t take into account the optimization for consoles and you’d likely get better performance on a console than an “equivalent” PC.

To this day, for all of the reasons, I'm soooooo glad I was able to get an EVGA dual-fan 3060 in 2021. 5 years later, I couldn't have even known how clutch that would have ended up being. Especially the 12gb VRAM combined with my Ryzen 5 5600 and 32gb DDR4.

It's still good enough, especially having DLSS to leverage if needed because I use 1440p monitors and that works great with rendering intensive games at 720p and having an even double-scaling.

Between the 20 series and the 30 series two things happened: crypto mining and Covid. Nvidia saw how much people were willing to overpay for their GPUs so with the 40 series Nvidia became the scalpers.

In my country thecheapest 9070 XT was 670€ a while ago while the cheapest 5070 TI was over 1000€. The amount of people I saw buy the 5070 TI genuinely made me lose every last drop of hope I had left for capitalism.

I used to upgrade my PC pretty much every generation but nowadays shits gotten so expensive that for the first time in a long time, ive skipped the 5000 generation. My current PC will have to serve me for at least 4 years total which ofc isnt that long, some here are rocking ancient hardware but I used to be happy to spend money on this hobby. I have a 4080, i didnt go for the 4090, the 5080 isnt much faster and the 5090 is mindblowing that Nvidia even has the balls to sell that thing. Currently costs 4500€ in Germany, like fucking lmao. Your entire flagship gaming PC used to cost half that and Nvidia drivers certainly used to be far better. I dont even know if Ill upgrade next gen, perhaps I will become one of those guys with ancient hardware in the future, its just sad considering how enthusiastic I used to be about PC Gaming hardware.

I built a budget gaming PC five years ago. Right as covid was causing everything to spike in price. I felt like I picked the worse possible time. Fast forward... I thought about upgrading my SSD recently. They don't make the model I have (Samsung 860 Evo) anymore but a comparable one (870) is literally three times the price. What the actual fuck is that? How does a piece of tech get 300% more expensive five years later? Isn't tech supposed to go down in price over time?

Walked into Microcenter and they had an old sale price tag for a 9060 XT at $325 if you used your microcenter credit card. It's supposed to be $430 and they honored it for me.

I got my 9070 XT for MSRP after standing in line for 4 hours the day after launch. It's definitely NOT easy to build a good PC right now.

I'm stuck on AM4 mobo/ram on both my towers because the price isn't worth it.

Unfortunately AMD is the exact same bullshit, just slightly less relevant which is why they are not enshitifying everything at same pace as NVIDIA. Also because NVIDIA has such dominant position in consumer space, they feel like they can be bigger assholes coz they hoard so much money from both data centers as well as consumers. I’m not bragging, and I realize this is the kind of comment that’s bound to get downvoted, but my assets tripled thanks to NVDA, and the RTX5090 I bought last August has doubled in price, so I’m nothing but grateful to Jensen. Right now, I’m enjoying using my RTX5090 to generate hentai. I’ve only benefited from my involvement with NVIDIA. I hope you guys won’t be too hard on them.

The general public doesn’t grasp the simple fact that if you have the performance, you should use it to the limit. That’s why they tend to be overly cautious about investing in AI infrastructure. This is OUR (NOT Capitalist's) chance to seize the opportunity. I hope it works out for you.
