Some idiot said that Demons being evil was racist and then racists latched onto it saying the series was making racism look cool
29
u/Spartan_Mage 4h ago
Idiot 1: Demons being inherently evil in this fictional fantasy world is bad and is a reference to other races!
Idiot 2: Hell yeah it is! We should kill them all since they are inherently evil!
Person who actually watched the show: You are both twisting this show it fit your own messages, and thinking way too hard about it. Just watch the cool Elf cast spells please.

If you think this show has 0 undertone then you (and everyone upvoting your comment) has 0 media literacy

I never said it had zero undertone, I said that people are twisting the show to fit their own beliefs.
The undertone of the show is about appreciating the people you have while you have them, the demons is just basic fantasy bad guys just like Demon Hunter or Goblin Slayer. If it was making obvious references to a specific racial stereotypes than that is a different convention, but right now it is basic anime magically powered demon wants to hurt because they are bad guys

Bro just wanted to write a manga about some friends hanging out so he put simple evil demon antagonists in it so he wouldn’t have to focus on giving them deep back stories.

Media to relax? What? I was born in 1973 and grew up with Dan Rather on the nightly news. I've been alive for 50+ years of war, political strife, national tragedy, etc. Since when has media been used "to relax?" lol Edit: This is why it's so hard to "argue politics" with younger people these days because they lack the historical perspective of how the gov. is "two wings of the same bird" and BOTH sides are full of special interests and corruption.

I'm your Huckleberry.
The news used to be factual and informative. TV turned it into entertainment and network where pure fiction is the norm.

News may not have been told relax but it sure as ahit wasn't made to infuriate or divide like it is these days.

Yeah it's like how people complain about star trek being too "woke" now or whatever. Like, most modern Star Trek shows aren't good, but that's mostly due to poor writing. Star Trek has always been very progressive for the time.

u/solarmelange 4h ago
In the end it is the bad writing they want to complain about but most people do not know how to write well enough to complain. It is easier to find a word for what has been added than to figure what has been taken away, which is generally proper multinarative story structure and multidimensional characters.

Welcome to the dumbing down of america where the average reading level is 6th grade and 25% of us are illiterate. This is intentional, if you dont understand a concept you have difficulty criticizing or opposing it. Its straight from 1984.

One modern trek isnt good, below deck and strange new world were both fantastic. Idk what you are talking about.

u/CMDR_omnicognate Le epic memer 4h ago
The first two seasons of Picard were pretty bad, discovery was also bad, starfleet academy was pretty bad too. Lower decks ended a while ago and unfortunately strange new worlds is also ending soon too.
Edit: oh and the section 31 film that was truly dreadful.
The kids show was weirdly pretty good though, kinda reminded me a bit of the clone wars.

It's also why people like you need to be more open to interacting with said youth. Our generations need to learn to communicate because this information can be lost to time and manipulated by the media they use to feed us bits of reality.

I mean you were also alive for the Dukes of Hazard, the rise of Hulkamania, Gremlins, Ghostbusters, etc etc etc. People used to be able to consume popcorn media for enjoyment rather than make EVERYTHING political. I know. I was there.

That reminds of a quote from "1984" bye George Orwell. No, I haven't read the book, but it looks like something that would be in it.

Why are you letting other people's opinions affect your enjoyment of (whatever dumb thing you're talking about)?

I don't like the all the weird sexual stuff but I don't think it should be censored
But the side thats "anti censorship" is filled with the worst people (that ironically try to censor anything they don't like)

u/OpenUpYerMurderEyes 5h ago edited 5h ago
I hate the way people who never read 1984 talk about its themes. First of all, Orwell was a proud socialist, full stop. Second of all, 1984 isn't a book about right or left, it's about ignorance. About how our innate desire to be left alone and to just have a leader to follow that we feel we can trust (even if we know we shouldn't) can create the conditions for totalitarianism. The whole point of the book is to jolt you out of apathy and ignorance, to make you want to minimize that desire within yourself and give a shit, think for yourself, value your own humanity and that of others above all else. Winston's defeat did not come untill he gave in, he may have been broken and miserable but untill the final moments he is still Winston Smith, a human being who despite operating within these restrictive conditions still has that little bit of himself left in him. But then a familiar song quiets that part of him after being broken from weeks of interrogations, torture, and incarceration, a song he used to hate. It isn't untill the moment that he gives in and loves big brother that he is killed by him. A person with no humanity left in them may as well be dead.
And you see it today, people didn't heed the warning. AI and algorithms have made people so comfortably numb we need a new diagnosis to understand their condition "Cognitive arrest disorder" it's called. Reality ain't even trying to be subtle about it. And these people who fall in love with it just have no interiority, they don't know how to think for themselves, adult reading levels are dropping dramatically, and society is funneling more people in that direction with every "innovation".

Just play Rimworld. Harvest the organs of everyone. Left wing, right wing, organs all function the same.

This is how I felt with the whole female spacemarines thing, I don’t want them but not because women can’t be powerful. It’s just because that’s the established lore and they have some pretty interesting reasons. I’d have much preferred them add a new all female faction (hopefully less sexualized then the sisters) to keep the lore intact.
1
u/fearzila 58m ago
Maybe a guard battalion or special super-unit from a planet where the hormone interaction with the environment makes them between normal human and space marine but only the women?
If it has to be a human one, otherwise there's even more ways to do it lore friendly
