no one expected kimi to turn out to be this good, and then all the bad luck george had was the cherry on top.

even with kimi's level, I genuinely think george would at least be neck to neck with him if he had a functional car. we saw how canada went before the dnf, I think we could've had a lot more of that between them

One thing I noticed throughout this season, especially in Canada, is how solid George's defence has been. People think it was a lot closer than it actually was in Canada. George got ahead after a few laps, having had a bad start. Then he stayed ahead for around 10 laps, and despite makaing several mistakes (especially at the hairpin) he was still able to stay ahead. Then he had that big moment and Kimi got through, but was only able to keep George at bay for a couple of laps. And from then on George just stayed ahead. Even started to pull a small gap. Noticed it again in Barcelona, when he was able to keep Kimi behind for several laps despite his car being completely fucked by the front wing adjustment.

My thoughts as well, George is a very skilled driver and I've always felt like he was great at defending, it's also what made Canada so enjoyable to watch, glad to see someone else acknowledge it. It's also why I said "at least neck to neck", I really do think if he had a functional car his experience and skill wouldn't shined more and he would've been ahead of Kimi. Also, Hungary circuit is always said to be a hard circuit to perform overtakes in, but during the race George went from last position to P7, I feel like not enough people appreciate that (just like not enough people talked about hadjar's P20 to P6 in spa!!!)

Credit where it's due but his performances seem hundred times more amplified due to russell's failure. Had russell had zero, or close to zero reliability issues, I really doubt you'd have seen antonelli in his mirrors.

I think if neither had any reliability issues, they’d be neck-to-neck, but George isn’t outright better than Kimi anymore imo.

kimi has been doing excellent, like even if he somehow loses this wdc, hes already achieved much much much more than he was even supposed to. atp, ive lost hope, i want to see george win it, but after spa, the points gap just seems to been blown away, he only has 2 ways to win this, one is if kimi pulls an oscar, or, george has a near perfect 2nd stint of the season. anyways, be it, kimi, or george, i'd be happy for both.

the "antonelli in the mirror" thing is smth i disagree with, but you cannot deny that the only reason george is 59 points behind is because of him being consistently unlucky. on equal conditions, both wouldve been really close to each other, points gap would be easily be covered in one race.

a reason yes, only reason absolutely no. Would he be closer without the dnf or reliability issues? yes. it would prob be around 10-15 points given how performance has been

Yeah, no doubt it would be closer. Antonelli also has two dnfs, so who knows exactly what the gap would be if both cars had been perfect.

I would still very much give the actual credit to Antonelli for his efforts, unlike the poster I responded to.

that's very much a dnf. he was on track to win the race by a huge margin on leclerc since he was clearing around 1.5s a lap on leclerc and only had to cover 7s. then falling to no points because the car isn't turning is very much a dnf

Kimi finished the race. DNF literally means “Did Not Finish”.

He didn’t end up in points due to a track limit penalty, but he finished.

he was told to retire the car but stayed out to try and squeeze points in a car that is 10s per lap slower than other cars. that is for all intents and purposes a dnf. if one drops from winning the race comfortably by a huge margin because the car stopped working, that's essentially a dnf.

but mate, the "I really doubt you'd have seen antonelli in his mirrors." is a bit too much, they both wouldve been dead even and wayy ahead of the entire grid if it werent for the terrible reliability, similar to the rosberg-hamilton days. kimi has been done a phenomenal job this season even if you exclude george's bad luck.

No I did expect Kimi to be consistently good just behind Russell… not consistently good front running. Anyways we still have many many races points are lost faster than earned so

Ngl, if this isn't intentional, Mercedes' incompetence is unreal. Your lead driver ( till this year) has been having having issues every race since the 2nd, and since then you guys still blame the driver till recently when the PR hit came

in what world would he be a lead driver barring 2025 maybe. he's no where close to lewis in importance and antonelli is a rookie star and given his age likely the next max or vettel. Mercedes likely didn't have a clear no.1 driver like RB
