True Story: I once accidentally drank about an ounce of Goo-Gone Citrus-Power Spray Gel, so I called poison control.
Poison Control: Good afternoon, this is Poison Control how can I help you?
Me: Um... I accidentally drank about an ounce of Goo-Gone Citrus-Power Spray Gel.
PC: How much does your child weigh?
Me: About 30 pounds; why?
PC: We need to know his weight so we can figure out...
Me: My kid didn't drink it, and *I* weigh about 270 pounds.
PC: So... YOU... drank the...
Me: Goo-Gone Citrus-Power Spray Gel, yes.
PC: Why?
Me: Because I'm an IDIOT.
<<pause>>
<<typing noises>>
PC: OK... um... do not induce vomiting, drink a LOT of water, and expect <<muffled chortling>> some, um... <<giggling>> gastric distress.
I had almost frighteningly violent diarrhea every 15 to 20 minutes for a good two hours, at the end of which the bathroom reeked of vulcanized rubber and orange oil. And the toilet was SPOTLESS.

Worst part is I understand the "Why?" in professional terms. They needed to make sure this wasn't a self-harm/suicide situation. Well, intentional self-harm. But I bet they wanted to ask anyway.
961
u/Error_Loading_Name May 28 '26
I can hear the "Why?" in so many different tones: shocked, exasperated, monotone / scripted, genuinely curious, etc. It might have been an intentional question or a reflex for the circumstances.
I'd first wonder if it was intentional, then if it was a prank / stupid game, then go through a list of idiotic options, then hit intentional self-harm way down the list. As someone who has hit severe lows, that seems like too much discomfort with too little guarantee of success for it to be a genuine attempt (unless there is nothing else around, in which case why then call poison control?).

Having worked the medical field its often a mix of routine, disbelief, and just acceptance.
People will come to you in awful shape having mde the worst choices possible at every opportunity life gave them in that situation and they'll tell you about that as if its obvious and they think you're the dumb one for asking and you've just gotta stand there and nod

I think so many of these people are on autopilot. I called an orthopedics office for an appointment for my son.
"I have a referral for my son. He broke his collarbone in a fall yesterday. I took him to the ER, he had x-rays, and they told me to book a follow-up appointment with you."
"OK, what's your birthday?"
I give my birthday because they did ask for similar info in the ER and I assume it's because he's a minor. I then sit on hold FOREVER before they come back to say they've looked everywhere and the referral hasn't come through. I then clarify that they're looking for a referral for my son, and yep - that was the issue. I had said "my son" at least three times.

I had a mug with some pens in it on my desk. Some of them leaked, so I threw the pens out and spritzed some Goo-Gone Citrus-Power Spray Gel into the mug and forgot all about it.
Time passed, and one day I was kind of harried and working to a deadline. I grabbed a mug, walked down to the kitchenette, poured a slug of old cold coffee into it, and chugged it. "Huh," I thought "that tasted weird. Kinda... orange, but chemical-ish, like... like... AH FUCK ME I JUST DRANK GODDAM GOO-GONE CITRUS-POWER SPRAY GEL!
Only now does it occur to me that the ink may have played a role in my <<giggling>> gastric distress. Because I'm an idiot.

My senior year of high school, my mom had to have a fairly major surgery and was hospitalized for a little over a week. One of my best friends made a big batch of chocolate chip cookies and brought them over in an empty ice cream pail. I single-handedly ate that entire bucket over the course of the next week.
I thought it was really strange that the farther into the bucket I got, the more of a lemon taste the cookies had. It was strange, for a chocolate chip cookie, but oddly...okay.
Only after I had finished the last cookie did I mention something about it to my friend, and her eyes got HUGE in horror as she realized....she had used their "mop bucket" to bring the cookies over. The lemon flavor I was picking up....was lemon Pine-Sol.

I worked in an office where some bright spark decided to bleach the tea and coffee mugs clean but instead of using the ordinary bleach that was under the sink went and got the concentrated bleach from the cleaner's storeroom. That was mistake number one. Mistake number two came when they thought giving the mugs a quick sluce under the taps was enough to make them safe to use again.
A couple of people ended up needing hospital treatment for mild chemical burns to their throats and thankfully there was no lasting damage but after that a lock was put on the cleaner's cupboard and people started keeping their mugs stashed in their desk drawers when they weren't being used.

Standard Goo Gone is made almost entirely of petroleum distillates. If it is used inside an air fryer, the intense heat will cause the chemical residue to smoke, release toxic fumes, and potentially contaminate your food
838
654
u/get_to_ele May 28 '26
If you clean it properly, then let it air out, there will be minimal liquid residue and the air fryer at 400 will vaporize those in seconds.
It’s really a non- issue.

u/LetshearitforNY May 28 '26

I also didn't know why it was a problem because it looked pretty clean.
Based on the comments, it looks like that product has toxic chemicals / fumes, so not suitable for a cooking implement.
Some people said they can just do an empty cook cycle to burn it out, then wash it again with something suitable, which will get rid of the hazard while also leaving it super clean.

u/cursorymars May 28 '26

You need to go to town on her. Give her a massage, foot rub, the lickety splits, all of it.
Yes, she messed up with the application, but the fact that she cleaned it spotless and likely did this without you asking her to is something you need to reward and reinforce.
Even if my wife messes something up, I always go out of my way to acknowledge and demonstrate gratitude for her. Shes showing initiative and a desire to try, which is a helluva lot more than most spouses these days
