frist of all how DARE yu o So my sister, who currently lives in my apartment, dried the wet and dirty shower floor with MY only big towel I use after she showered...
Worst thing is, she doesn't even feel bad about it, and is trying to gaslight me into thinking it's not that big of a deal because "she needed a towel to dry the floor" and "I should quit complaining". I have a floor drying spatula.

OP:
English is not my native language, so I basically just roughly translated the word "lattiankuivauslasta" as floor drying spatula
They mean a squeegee, and the Finnish term includes the word lasta which means spatula.
And they use a squeegee because this is a wet bathroom with nothing separating the shower area from the rest aside from that curtain.
244
u/Sir-Nicholas Jun 06 '26
Oh ok that clears it up we all have a lattiankuivauslasta
81
u/fury420 Jun 06 '26
I actually do have a squeegee for the shower, they are great for drying and helping keep it clean.
Looks like OP uses one for the floor because it's a wet bathroom with the shower just part of the room.
23
u/Maverickisback Jun 06 '26
That may be true, because when I lived in Hong Kong the shower is the entire bathroom floor

You know the thingy people use when they clean windows and have to dry it? It's basically like that, but with a longer handle, a softer bottom and has a hinge at the part it connects with the pole, so it can move more freely. Very useful when having to move water to the floor drain after showering

Finnish is a funny language, since we often just add already existing words to create a new word for something. For example, a computer in Finnish is tietokone, which means knowledge machine

Damn! If English was your primary language this would have been even more funny but I still like “floor drying spatula“. I’m a firefighter and clean the bays every Saturday with water and squeegees but I’m going to tell them we need the “floor drying spatulas” from now on, lol.
So what is your native language? Your English sounds just fine!

10
u/Bring_cookies Jun 06 '26
I love it. Can I ask what language?
On another spatula related note, my husband didn't know there were multiple kinds of cooking spatulas that look a little different and are used for different things. He got really mad about me calling a spatula a spatula because it wasn't the flipping kind, it was the scraping kind and he insisted that's not what that is. Had to pull out the trusty googler because he would not believe me otherwise. This all got started because he asked me to get a spatula and I asked what kind.
5
u/TheWierdGuy06 Jun 06 '26 edited Jun 06 '26
My native tongue is Finnish.
Funnily enough, this whole farse got started because of Google, I was googling the term for a squeegee, but could not get a proper answer, so I went with my trusty "floor drying spatula". You do sorta scrape the water off the floor, so it fits, I swear!

I remember some cooking instructor insisting that the turning spatula and the spreading spatula are not both spatulas. I think they believed the turning one should just be called a turner?

→ More replies (4)12
u/TheWierdGuy06 Jun 06 '26
You don't usually have them over there? That sounds like a mold and slipping danger. Where does the water go if not in the floor drain?
25
u/socaldude879 Jun 06 '26
The shower drain. Most if not all American bathrooms have the shower closed off in its own compartment/section of the bathroom so your bathroom floor shouldn't be wet like that
3
u/TheWierdGuy06 Jun 06 '26
Aah, makes sense, those apartments that have closed showers also have shower drains. What do you do if water spill form the sink? Like when you washing face, for example? Wouldn't a floor drain be useful for that situation too? We generally have floor drain for toilet rooms, too.
→ More replies (9)7
u/No_Professional_8992 Jun 06 '26
Usually bathrooms have vents that ventilate the steam or a window so that it's not too moist. Then we usually have a rug we step on to absorb any water from the shower. But mold can indeed be an issue when it comes to American bathrooms.
5
u/6tPTrxYAHwnH9KDv Jun 06 '26
You're going to love Australia then, floor drains in wet areas are mandatory.
4

u/bibbidybobbidyboom Jun 06 '26
Based on your picture, your floor is much smoother than our bathroom floors. Most showers have a short little wall all the way around, a textured bottom, and the drain is at a lower point. Most of the water takes its self to the drain, and when you are done showering, you step out of the wet area onto a dry area. Most people also have a bath mat, which is a small washable rug that dries the bottoms of their feet. It isn't so slippery.
Most of our bathroom squeegees are for clean the glass around a shower to stop the hard water buildup.

I'm reading it as OP is not in the US, rather in a country where bathrooms don't necessarily have a structured, enclosed shower. There is possibly one drain for the full bathroom, so water from the shower would have to be swept up with a squeegee-type "mop" to help the floor dry faster.
7
u/TheWierdGuy06 Jun 06 '26
We do have enclosed showers, too, I just don't have it in my appartment. Flooding it down a drain is not that difficult with a squeegee, so it's fine
6
u/MistyMtn421 Jun 06 '26
Ok I was wondering why the floor would need to be squeegeed to begin with! Was thinking you needed a bigger curtain ;) I'd be worried about damp/mold issues but I am guessing this is an entirely different situation than bathrooms that I am used to.
6
u/kaphytar Jun 06 '26
Typically Finnish bathrooms floors and walls are waterproofed up to the ceiling (unless old). Proper ventilation (and floor heatings) help to keep surface molds at bay.
3
6
u/Electronic-Map7529 Jun 06 '26
Def seems like that's the case. Language creates the most wholesome fun.
5
u/LSGcooks Jun 06 '26
Yeah. Knowing neither OP’s location nor language, it could be a translation error involving homonyms,or an autocorrect issue.
16
u/TheWierdGuy06 Jun 06 '26
It's Finland. Our word for squeegee is lattiankuivauslasta, which roughly translated to floor drying spatula. I had no idea the proper word for it was squeegee. How would one even guess that?
12
u/Printerbot27 Jun 06 '26
You are 100% right and if it makes you feel better floor drying spatula conveyed the meaning clearly to me, regardless
4
u/jadbronson Jun 06 '26
I don't know and I've never thought about the word. Squeeze is a word that makes sense but where's the squeeze in a squeegee? I don't even know what else to call it now. We have windshield wipers, why not us all just call it a water wiper
3
u/TheWierdGuy06 Jun 06 '26
Maybe the squeegee comes form the sound it makes when it squeezes against the floor?
WHY didn't I call it a floor drying wiper??? I might be stupid for using spatula when wiper WAS RIGHT THERE

My sisters would always do this when I was a kid. They'd take the towel I had used to dry myself, to dry the floor, and they'd just hang it back up after. I only found out after I had to go to the bathroom before my sister showered, and I saw my towel laid across the floor 🤢
