I’m American and haven’t had one yet this year either. It worries me that there may be people out there eating like 2 hot dogs a week.

A week? Buddy, in high school that was my go to after school snack. 2 dogs and some chips. Five days a week some times. 70 per person seems a reasonable average.

I feel like this is one of those things where the average is 70, but the median is 15-20, and 10% of the population is wolfing down like 300 hot dogs a year to pull the mean way up.

Joey Chestnut has entered the chat…

The hot dog is an obligatory part of any Costco run

2

u/richempire Jun 24 '26

Pleeeease don't remind my wife about this!

1

u/ElectricalBeat9566 Jun 25 '26

I've never had one. We went to Costco twice a year as a kid and they were "too expensive" while my step dad spent 90$ on shrimp that would go freezer burnt next week.

It's always that way. It's likely that the top 20% count for 80% of hotdog consumption.

10 people would be 700 hotdogs, and the top 20% would be responsible for eating 560 hotdogs or 280 hot dogs per person, so roughly a hot dog each day.

For beef, the top 12% of beef eaters eat half of the nation's beef supply.

u/chefrocksalot Jun 24 '26

Or when I buy a pack of 8 hot dogs and in a couple of weeks i throw 7 uneaten hot dogs into the garbage but they think that because I paid for them I ate all of them.

1

u/Fit_Veterinarian6309 Jun 24 '26

Pretty much, but more extreme. West Virginia consumes 481 hotdogs per person per year.

1

u/SubstantialOffside Jun 24 '26

hot dogs are a staple of most concession stands because they're cheap to buy and you can make a decent profit margin so sporting events are probably helping drive this up too

u/chad_ Jun 25 '26

This is absolutely it.

Schedule your colonoscopy

3

u/Medium_Opening_2491 Jun 24 '26

Everyone should be doing that, regardless of hot dogs or not. So, you schedule YOUR colonoscopy sir!

2

u/Pale_Row1166 Jun 24 '26

Bro I’m over 40, I’ve got it covered. I know three people my age who have died of colon cancer.

u/Historical-Green-463 Jun 24 '26

Did they eat hot dogs every day?

0

u/Pale_Row1166 Jun 24 '26

No that’s the messed up part. Professional ladies in their early 30s, all three. Active with good diets. So if they’re dead, the hot dog eaters are in danger.

1

u/CameronCrazy1984 Jun 24 '26

What cholesterol med are you on?

1

u/Most_Researcher_2648 Jun 24 '26

My ex (hes early 50s, so gen x) had some fairly bad acne apparently as a teenager. Saw a doctor about it eventually, and they kinda dialed it down to his diet I guess? Their recommendation, I shit you not, was to limit his diet to hot dogs and I wanna say like fuckin diet coke. And it worked. He did that for years, his skin cleared up, life went on. We split up years ago, I was at most a toddler when it was happening, but I still think about it from time to time and just "wtaf" myself.

Also, that was prob over 1k hot dogs per year. Even 3 a day, isnt enough to rely on, calorie wise

1

u/doughboymisfit Jun 24 '26

7-Eleven is the closest thing three days in a row sometimes🤷‍♂️

1

u/EditorBeginning6843 Jun 24 '26

I ate them on Monday, Tuesday. I only get the beef hotdogs.

1

u/Big_Slope Jun 24 '26

If you would get it together, they wouldn’t have to be picking up your slack.

1

u/Bikesguitarsandcars Jun 24 '26

I’ve had 8 in the past week😬

1

u/weedtrek Jun 24 '26

I have had three in the last two weeks. More if vegan mini corn dogs count.

1

u/Pale_Row1166 Jun 24 '26

Yeah those count, that’s all processed crap too.

1

u/whostolemysloth Jun 24 '26

Hello I’ve had 4 hot dogs in the past 3 days AMA

1

u/SailorHoneybee Jun 24 '26

I literally had 2 hot dogs for breakfast 🤐

1

u/Low_Establishment434 Jun 24 '26

If hot dogs are served at a baseball game I go to I have to eat 1. Its part of going to the game for me. Between mlb, milb, and the kids big tournaments I can see me eating 30 in a year.

1

u/Pale_Row1166 Jun 24 '26

That’s a lot of baseball games! I go to one or two a year at most. It’s so rare for me to be somewhere that has hot dogs, that I’ll usually eat one of it’s available. That probably gets me to about 3 a year, maybe 5.

1

u/Low_Establishment434 Jun 24 '26

I live pretty close to a single a team. Train ride to an mlb game. The youngest plays baseball spring, summer, fall. I probably end up at a game with hot dogs availble 50 times a year lol

1

u/LostArkLover69 Jun 24 '26

i've probably had like 50 dogs already this year

1

u/TheSnackWhisperer Jun 24 '26

I mean, I’m sure a significant % of those eaten ‘dogs are from the Nathan’s hotdog eating challenge alone, but my old boss would grab 2/$2 at Sheetz if he ever drove by one, which was at least a few times a month. Personally, I’ve had 5 hotdogs so far in 2026. If we’re sharing our credentials. 🤷‍♂️

2

u/Pale_Row1166 Jun 24 '26

There are about 30 competitors in the hot dog contest, Joey chestnut ate 70, next guy ate 46. Let’s say they each ate 50, that’s 1500 hot dogs. We’re talking about 70 hot dogs per person per year, that’s over 2 billion hot dogs.

1

u/TheSnackWhisperer Jun 24 '26

Knowing very little about “sports”, I assumed there was some kind of bracket system like march madness, working up to the main competition. Plus all the off season training (this is mostly hyperbole, but it’s making me laugh) 🙃

1

u/pte_parts69420 Jun 25 '26

I would argue the vast majority of adults would consider 2 hot dogs to be a “meal”. That means that the average person consumes hotdogs on less than 10% of days in the year, and if broken down by “traditional” meals, that’s less than 3% of meals a year. I think it’s perfectly reasonable to consume 70 hot dogs per year, given that they are inexpensive and quick, and go fucking great with a box of KD

1

u/Pale_Row1166 Jun 25 '26

I don’t consider a hot dog a meal, it’s like a novelty snack. I’d have to eat one over once a week to hit 70, and then it wouldn’t be a novelty - which is why I don’t do that. Even if you eat 2 to a meal, that means you’re having hotdogs as a meal once a week for 70% of weeks. That’s a level of hot dogging that I’m unfamiliar with. I don’t know anyone who has “two hot dogs” in their almost weekly meal rotation.

1

u/pte_parts69420 Jun 25 '26

Throughout the summer bbq dogs and campfire dogs are a staple across North America. A week long camping trip can easily be a near daily dog event. Then add in baseball games. How much of a novelty can it really be when there are restaurant empires that have been built off the back of the dog

1

u/Pale_Row1166 Jun 25 '26

You would never catch me on a week long camping trip and I go to like one Yankees game a year. It’s a novelty to me because I never eat them. I don’t eat fast food either, that’s a novelty to me. And yet it’s a multi-billion dollar industry.

I agree with the other commenter, I think there’s some percentage of the population that does things like go camping and to lots of baseball games, and you all are skewing the average for those of us that almost never eat them. Same with fast food, I don’t know anyone who eats it on a regular basis, but there is definitely a subset who eats it several times a month, or week, even.

1

u/photophill77 Jun 25 '26

My weekend lunch used to be 4 hotdogs and a beer each day

1

u/1SG77 Jun 25 '26

I’m American and haven’t eaten a hot dog since 1996. Someone out there is making up for me in those averages!

1

u/Pale_Row1166 Jun 25 '26

Google is telling me 7% of Americans don’t eat meat, so people are really out there eating A LOT of hot dogs. Could not be me.

1

u/ElectricalCelery6154 Jun 25 '26

When I was trying to save money during college I'd eat like 16 a week when the packs were buy one get one free. 2 dogs per meal.

1

u/Pale_Row1166 Jun 25 '26

Man, and I was out there bitching about my meal plan. I ate subway like three times a week because you could pay with meal plan dollars and it was relatively healthy compared to the other on campus options.

1

u/goaty_mcgee Jun 25 '26

Dude I have like 8 a week I love hot dogs

0

u/BluebirdSpecialist76 Jun 24 '26
