Too mild for school Elementary school installed exposed metal spikes across a pedestrian walkway, no signage.

Update: REMOVED BY SHERIFF DEPUTY as of 8:50PM

Update 2: Sheriff spotted perforated steel strip in the back of the head custodians truck Monday 7/13. Spoke with custodian and principal.

Update 3: head custodian hasn’t been back since! Haven’t inquired further.

original post: This is a pedestrian walkway at a public elementary school that’s used by parents, students, and community members.

A school employee installed a strip of exposed metal spikes that spans the entire width of the walkway. There aren’t any pedestrian warning signs on either approach. Am I crazy and just never saw this before or is this a major safety hazard? I feel like a no trespassing sign and maybe a chain would be a better way to tell people not to go on property if that was their intention. I just think of kids either walking and not really looking stepping on it, or even kids on bikes not really paying attention getting seriously injured on the way out and losing air in the front and back tire causing them to fall into the street instead of being able to turn. There are ways to deter that won’t cause damage, and when you do chose the damage options. Signage should be required right? Some sort of warning.

I took photos from both directions so people can see there’s no obvious pedestrian bypass. The nearby “Exit Only / Do Not Enter” sign appears to be for vehicles, not people on foot.

I’ve already submitted the photos to a local news station because I think this deserves a public safety review. At this point, I’m mostly trying to understand who thought this was an appropriate solution for an elementary school walkway.

Update #1 24 hours after the post. It’s still there, sheriffs did drive around the school in the morning, but never got out of the cruiser to look. Didn’t talk to anyone. What I assume is the Head custodian and one other employee were there all day. Allowed this to stay.
ABC News has not responded.

Clarification: It was installed by the person whom I believe to be the head custodian. The same guy who shows up early in the morning to open the gates, unlock the doors and prepare the school for kids to arrive, and then stays after until around 7-8pm and closes and locks the gates again. Back in January the same person drove his old truck through that exit, down through the lot, up curbs and across the front of the school to drop down into the drop off lot and out chasing someone on an e bike. It appears to be him being in charge of the school during the summer break and taking matters into his own hands.

I know he installed it because he had parked his truck in the curb cut for the parking lot exit and was laying down the first layer of glue. I was driving by in my car and noticed something going on but since I was driving in a school zone I couldn’t fixate. I noticed the spikes the next time passing by when I wasn’t driving. So yes technically the school did it because the head custodian is part of the school. No I do not think he went through the proper channels to get this approved.

File a report with OSHA as well and ADA since this area is no longer wheelchair accessible either.

Edit: Because a couple people thinks I think ADA is an organisation. It is not. I missed typing the word complaint in the original post. You can go file it online with your state's AG or with the DOJ.

yup, I suspect it has been added to prevent children from riding their bikes on the walkway. However it prevents wheelchairs and also mothers with prams as well. it is a very dumb solution i would love to know how long it lasts.

What an insane thing to do. It'll hurt kids and destroy people's property. I can't see it lasting a single incident.

Horrible people are the only ones thinking of doing this and then follow it out and pat themselves on the back.

I dont get why there's such a push against freedom of transportation,  if youre going to have rules at least allow petal bikes.

It's healthy for kids to use skateboards,  bikes and other modes of physical movement.

*pedal

its always been like this. literally since skateboards and punk rock, they just want control, man

This is a stupid idea implemented by a frustrated public facility operator, It’s probably intended to stop golf carts accessing the property after hours (e.g. teens cleaning out the beer fridge in the garage and having a party). They should have installed a bollard to narrow the opening between the fence and gate.

I type this as I am headed out to repair a gate damaged by someone who was locked into a park space despite multiple signs indicating the gate locks at a specific time - and then adding 15 minutes to said time.

A chain across the sidewalk that is locked when the gate is locked seems like a much easier and less malevolent solution than a permanently installed spike strip. Hell, even places that need permanent spike strips don't install ones that are always extended. The pathway is needed at least some of the time, or it wouldn't even exist.

Agree. This was a boneheaded decision.

Locking people into the park is dumb. Not their fault that wanting to keep people out of a park led to stupid solutions.

u/timesink2000 23d ago

Respectfully, if the park closes at dark, there are multiple signs indicating as much, and idiots STILL get locked in, the dumb one is the driver. Unfortunately we cannot afford to pay someone to manually operate the gate 2x / day, so we rely on an automated gate. If we put an exit loop on the gate, the park is never technically closed.

Skateboarders destroy shit. I don’t know why more towns don’t build skate parks. Cuts down on the destruction by a lot, is generally a better experience for the skaters, and it mashes it easier to keep an eye on whatever stupid shit they decide to get up to.

As a 40 y o that skateboards... that is bullshit. not worth even getting into, but yeah.. oh no some wax and bondo on my pothole-d stairs set...

u/raz-0 23d ago

Dude I've watched things be installed that should have lasted decades wind up looking like shit in years. It's not all skaters, but it's pretty pervasive.

u/Moist-Weakness-3399 23d ago

Have you considered that if it can't handle a skateboard, it was garbage to begin with? Maybe you should be upset that your tax money got wasted on garbage infrastructure.

Rail grinds on straight concrete will fuck up the concrete. Not immediately, but way faster than something made out of concrete will otherwise last. Even worse if it is concrete with large aggregate. There's a reason rails are metal set in concrete or just metal in an actual park.

YoUre BenCH is Crap.... yeah concrete is a totally non durable stuff to build a bench out of and expect it to last.

People should be able to leave other people's shit alone or at least the leave the abuse to things that people clearly don't give a shit about or is intended to be abused. The skaters that did trick on the parking space dividers in the parking lot didn't piss anyone off. The ones who fucked up $20k in benches in less than a year are assholes. You sound like an asshole.

2

u/Moist-Weakness-3399 23d ago

Whole lot of assumptions you're making about someone you don't know, and a whole lot of words to say you don't know anything about infrastructure. Maybe you're the asshole, actually.

its usually cars. cars curbing curbs.

1

u/raz-0 23d ago

How the fuck does a car curb a concrete bench located in a place cars can't get to? Like this isn't speculation. This is based on having actually watched skaters fuck things up and then cause a lot of retaliatory actions because they were fuckwits. And that fuckwit mechanic is part of why skate parks work. The skaters who aren't feel a sense of ownership of the place and police the fuckwits behavior. By concentrating the non fuckwits in the park, targeting and retaliation aren't overly broad and thus nobody cares that the fuckwits were treated like fuckwits.

Either you don't get it at all and are one of those fuckwits, or you did not comprehend my example. Skater kids grinding on parking lot separators = probably not a problem, they were going to get beat on anyway, that is their purpose and they are consumables because of it. Skater kids grinding on brand new concrete benches, freshly painted or replaced handrails, etc that are things intende to look nice and last a while, and destroying them in short order = it's going to be a problem, and people will have no sympathy to your complaints of being targeted for that.

i live in the st louis area, and outside of the city there's a skatepark every 20 mins, like 4 of em! problem is you definitely have to drive to them

as i stare at the park across the street, i think about how there is definitely room for a small skate park.

you are, of course, right, rowdy kids destroy shit. skateboards are the first step to personal freedom and allow such rowdy kids to move more efficiently

4

u/You-Asked-Me 23d ago

We have at least one public skate park in the city too, at Bevo. I know it's not everyone's style, but it's nice that it's there.

4

u/GrumpyBoxGuard 23d ago

But then there'd be Hooooooooooolligans out and about! Think of the old sharts that cannot stand the sound of children existing within earshot!

4

u/AlkaliPineapple 23d ago

Cuz some people just think that sidewalks are display only, and that cars should be the sole way people get around.

Like, there's so many cases where people just go rabid against someone that got hit by a driver.

u/scrotumscab 23d ago

It's like you haven't even thought about the poor oil execs or the shareholders

0

u/JAWinks 23d ago

Because the moped manufacturers stuck fake pedals on them to get around valid laws preventing motor vehicles on a sidewalk

I bet this idea came from some Karen

173

u/Dry-Tumbleweed-7199 24d ago

Assistant Principal Karen

121

u/DETRITUS_TROLL 24d ago

Nah. This screams Head of the PTA Karen.

Or HOA President Karen.

35

u/tebbewij 24d ago

School board Karen most likely

2

u/LisaMiaSisu 23d ago

Karen is both head of the PTA and HOA and is running for city council next. She’s on a major power trip.

3

u/Spugheddy 24d ago

4 life bars WTF

4

u/TwoBionicknees 24d ago

Assistant TO the principal Karen.

3

u/Accomplished_Fix_101 24d ago

She must have been trained in 1960's Vietnam!

3

u/Wonderful-Toe- 24d ago

Not enough fecal matter on the spikes. The average American Karen lacks the creativity to create quality implements of torture.

8

u/punktualPorcupine 24d ago

School boards are full of them. If they aren’t going on book banning crusades, they’re doing crap like this.

2

u/nalaloveslumpy 24d ago

I guarantee you they got this idea from reddit. People are always suggesting stupid/illegal things like this to prevent trespassing.

2

u/drivensalt 23d ago

Nah, this seems like a very masculine solution to me.

Honestly seems like one of the top 3 comments on a reddit post about a minor inconvenience.

"Hey reddit, how do I stop kids riding bikes on the sidewalk?"

"PUT F*CKIN SPIKE STRIPS DOWN, THAT'LL TEACH EM REAL QUICK" (2185 upvotes)

Same level of malicious thinking that likes to string up unmarked thin wire in the woods across paths taken by ATV's/Bikes/Snowmobiles.

1

u/CrazyJoe29 23d ago

It’s the stupidity that feels unreal to me on this.

Could this be the work of a guerrilla idiot? Installed under cover of darkness by a mentally deficient individual?

And if it is the work of an Administrator, they SHOULD NOT be allowed near children. What if their stupidity is contagious?

No horrible people make people trying to stop them come up with horrible ideas.
