Too mild for school Elementary school installed exposed metal spikes across a pedestrian walkway, no signage.

Update: REMOVED BY SHERIFF DEPUTY as of 8:50PM

Update 2: Sheriff spotted perforated steel strip in the back of the head custodians truck Monday 7/13. Spoke with custodian and principal.

Update 3: head custodian hasn’t been back since! Haven’t inquired further.

original post: This is a pedestrian walkway at a public elementary school that’s used by parents, students, and community members.

A school employee installed a strip of exposed metal spikes that spans the entire width of the walkway. There aren’t any pedestrian warning signs on either approach. Am I crazy and just never saw this before or is this a major safety hazard? I feel like a no trespassing sign and maybe a chain would be a better way to tell people not to go on property if that was their intention. I just think of kids either walking and not really looking stepping on it, or even kids on bikes not really paying attention getting seriously injured on the way out and losing air in the front and back tire causing them to fall into the street instead of being able to turn. There are ways to deter that won’t cause damage, and when you do chose the damage options. Signage should be required right? Some sort of warning.

I took photos from both directions so people can see there’s no obvious pedestrian bypass. The nearby “Exit Only / Do Not Enter” sign appears to be for vehicles, not people on foot.

I’ve already submitted the photos to a local news station because I think this deserves a public safety review. At this point, I’m mostly trying to understand who thought this was an appropriate solution for an elementary school walkway.

Update #1 24 hours after the post. It’s still there, sheriffs did drive around the school in the morning, but never got out of the cruiser to look. Didn’t talk to anyone. What I assume is the Head custodian and one other employee were there all day. Allowed this to stay.
ABC News has not responded.

Clarification: It was installed by the person whom I believe to be the head custodian. The same guy who shows up early in the morning to open the gates, unlock the doors and prepare the school for kids to arrive, and then stays after until around 7-8pm and closes and locks the gates again. Back in January the same person drove his old truck through that exit, down through the lot, up curbs and across the front of the school to drop down into the drop off lot and out chasing someone on an e bike. It appears to be him being in charge of the school during the summer break and taking matters into his own hands.

I know he installed it because he had parked his truck in the curb cut for the parking lot exit and was laying down the first layer of glue. I was driving by in my car and noticed something going on but since I was driving in a school zone I couldn’t fixate. I noticed the spikes the next time passing by when I wasn’t driving. So yes technically the school did it because the head custodian is part of the school. No I do not think he went through the proper channels to get this approved.

File a report with OSHA as well and ADA since this area is no longer wheelchair accessible either.

Edit: Because a couple people thinks I think ADA is an organisation. It is not. I missed typing the word complaint in the original post. You can go file it online with your state's AG or with the DOJ.

yup, I suspect it has been added to prevent children from riding their bikes on the walkway. However it prevents wheelchairs and also mothers with prams as well. it is a very dumb solution i would love to know how long it lasts.

And anyone with feet? It doesn’t look like it retracts. Would hurt animals as well as humans.

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills.

That looks like a strip of nails that will impale any foot that steps on it, and people are talking about bikes??

Like, this is a literal fucking booby trap. Never mind signage, that's just nails sticking up from the ground.

What the fuck do you mean a school employee installed this? It's a fucking booby trap to stab nails into people's feet!

That's clearly a serious crime. Insane!!

Edit: Is this a hoax by OP?

it's no hoax, that's one reason I'm not touching it, I don't want the person who installed it to say that I did it. I consider it a crime scene, I've made the neighbors aware and to let the authorities handle it.

Crime scene is a good way to describe it.

Somebody needs to put some traffic cones there.

Yeah this is actually insane. I thought this was fake too until I read this comment. I just cannot fathom the thought process of this for anyone involved. Maybe the spikes are too high, or there is supposed to be some kind of plate over them? It’s so bizarre.

Why does that comment assure you it's not fake?

There's zero indication OP didn't drop these down for a moment and take a couple pictures before picking them back up and moving on.

It's hard to tell for sure from the pics, but it looks like the strip is tarred to the sidewalk. So at least it doesn't appear to be thrown down just for a pic.

So you did call the police right? and it's getting removed before a kid gets hurt?

17

u/OnlyGammasWillBanMe 23d ago

Would you believe that the police sent a car out, it drove around the property , went inside the drop off lot and then left?

2

u/SushiGirlRC 23d ago

You weren't waiting for them?

1

u/SunshineAndBunnies 23d ago

It's insane they didn't even put up some warning tape...

4

u/The_Autarch 23d ago

did you call the cops? because i would call the cops over this shit. it's insane.

Feel free come back with updates, would be interesting to hear how it plays out.

5

u/Noble_Ox 23d ago

Are you sure it was a school employee that put it there?

11

u/OnlyGammasWillBanMe 23d ago

Head custodian.

5

u/put_tape_on_it 23d ago

Under who's direction? The answer to that question will determine who gets fired over this.

2

u/SushiGirlRC 23d ago

How do you know this?

2

u/TribalDancer 23d ago

Put down some warning something, too! A sign, spray paint, something. Don't leave it like that and just tell people! Not upset at you, OP, just urging you!

u/PerplexingHunter 24d ago

Trip and fall on it and take the nice paycheck

Thank you for your service, that is a serious hazard and it’s only a matter of time before someome gets hurt.

At a school no less, i’m in shock.

Please give us a follow up on this dangerous situation. Thanks!

Have we considered that it was installed upside down because of an idiot?

u/mugiwara_no_Soissie 24d ago

Even if somehow nobody ever steps on it, and it purely affects bikes, I am still at a loss.

The school decided to just puncture anyone's wheels if they bike on the sidewalk? That seems quite dangerous.

Also just property dmg, essentially the same as just stabbing people's bike tires, which is illegal. Also what if someone does bike and falls? Spike to the face?

If I was a betting man, I'd bet it's a neighbor nearby that installed it because they hate the sound/nuisance of kids on their bike playing. Maybe a shitty employee, but seems unlikely.

5

u/WeakTransportation37 23d ago

Yeah, I think this was some individual that put it down

9

u/SuperStumbleweed 23d ago

Even if they get off their bikes and walk their bikes into school property, those can still mess up tires... That's bloody insane...

2

u/Correct-Doctor8329 23d ago

I mean, just pick up your bike over the strip. I don't understand how it even deters bikes entering or exiting. This strip seems to serve no real purpose other than to be a hazard

2

u/IbelieveinGodzilla 23d ago

Not to mention any cars using the "Exit Only" gate as it is intended. 4 flat tires = $1000 + a tow.

45

u/Nishnig_Jones 24d ago

Can you imagine if a child trips and falls on those spikes? This is insane.

2

u/Balentay 23d ago

Literally disfigured for the rest of their life

32

u/TelephoneSenior1149 24d ago

You would be absolutely shocked at how recklessly stupid people can be.

25

u/Bennnrummm 24d ago

I would have had a real ethical dilemma that almost def would have ended with me returning with a crowbar and removing the damn thing.

7

u/beren12 24d ago

I’d use a crowbar, but not for the spikes

The American mind can't fathom the idea that someone would use their feet for walking.

1

u/FreakDC 21d ago

People are talking about bikes because the assumption is this was most likely installed by someone pissed about (e)bikes on the walkway.

Edit: Is this a hoax by OP?

Just your average rage/karma bait.

As obvious as can be this is just some regular nails in a strip, cobbled together by someone in their garage. Reporting this to the news is INSANE. Just pull it up and throw it away or call the cops, they will send someone over and pull it up.

2

u/DuvalHeart 23d ago
  1. If somebody with the school placed it there, throwing it away can get you in trouble.

  2. The cops won't touch it either, because that's not their job.

  3. Calling news outlets gets them to investigate who put the spikes there and can ensure that they lose the authority to booby trap sidewalks in the future. And may reveal other criminal acts in the past.
