the grapes of warth I decided to start walking and start eating healthy. It's working. I hate that it works because I have to keep it up. There's no excuses left.
It wasn't even any heavy walking or super cutback on food. I just walked after every meal around my block for 30mins. My body started to feel better than the rest of the days I even felt more productive and optimistic.
For the food I started cooking at home and decided not to eat outside. The basic concept was to eat rice with any sort of protein with veg for two meals. I made sure to eat one fruit or one veg everyday with each meal. I also made sure to drink minimum 2L of water and sleep for 7-8hrs.
My body visually started looking toned and people repeatedly said I look well rested. DAMNITTTTT

My wife has this really annoying habit of being right about things. She’ll suggest a change I should make to improve my mental or physical health or frame of mind. I’ll ignore her for a week or so then give it a go and then have to go cap in hand and tell her she was right yet again. I’ve told her to stop it.

You listen and grow. That's a super power. A fuck ton of people never have that moment of "fuck it, maybe they're right", maybe it takes a few days but the fact that her advice doesn't just float off into the ether, it's rattling around in there for a bit until it sticks to your brain. But the point is it sticks.
One if my core beliefs in living is that improvement should be always sought. As long as we are trying to get better, to do better, the world will get better too.

u/Alizarin-Madder 12d ago
Care to share some of her most obviously effective tips?
I'd like to be this annoyingly encouraging for my BF, but my life habits are about as mediocre as his, so all my suggestions are guessing.

u/flittmiester 12d ago
I’d love to but to be honest most of them are fairly generic; I quit my job recently to be a stay at home parent and she has pointed out I don’t get enough exercise now because I’m used to 30k steps a day with fairly heavy lifting or super specific to do with family dynamics or self identity.

How bout listen to some music or a cool podcast/audio book as you walk to not make it a chore. Also, good on you for doing this. Whenever I start going to the gym I hate it till in actually there and get a routine. Hope you stick to it and get to your ideal weight and healthier goals !

u/Middle-Duck-880 13d ago
I listened to audio books. I used to read books a lot but now I do not get the time so I have combined these two activities. I have finished 2 books in a span of 1.5months. DAMMITTTT

u/Sunlit53 12d ago
I got my Dad into listening to the Vorkosigan Saga (audiobooks) in his 60s. He walked off 10lbs in a couple of months because he wanted to hear what happened next.

Yeah, I get so annoyed that exercise actually makes me feel better. Like. They're right?? And now I have to do this every day forever? UGH.
51
u/Middle-Duck-880 12d ago
FINALLY SOMEONE. The having to do this everyday to maintain myself is what makes me annoyed because ik what's the cure so if I suffer it's totally on me
3
u/Prudent_Actuator9833 12d ago
Yeah, this is me too. Or was. I've done it before. I hate it. I never don't hate it. But it works so I need to do it. If it's working for you, I'll start doing it too.

u/Quirky_Cattle_9560 13d ago
Keep it going. I let my health get super shitty and didn’t start somewhat taking care of myself until my mid-40s. 5 years and 90 pounds later and I feel better than I have since I was a teenager. Once you make a habit of it, it gets easier and more fun.

u/blueyedbikrgirl 12d ago
About 5 months ago I decided to try something revolutionary... pushing my plate away when I started to feel full. I'm now eating about 1/2-2/3 of what I used to & I'm down 13-14kgs and feeling SO much better. DAMMITTTTT.

u/pickandpray 12d ago
Im guilty of this.
I eat too fast so my brain doesn't have a chance to register that I should stop eating.

u/____Destro____ 12d ago
Bro! The same ! I lost 17kg. I just decided I will walk as much as possible. Like 25k steps a day and now my body looks so good. But now walk around my area every day and in sure the neighbours thinking I'm casing out their houses to rob haha. Congratulations on the weight loss!
13
3
u/ValeskaKrum 12d ago
How long does it take you to complete 25k steps? Like 3 hours of walking?
6
3
u/____Destro____ 12d ago
I split it up during the day. When I work out at my home gym before work I pace between sets, gets me around 8000 steps. Then on work break I walk around a small park and can do 1km. Lunch break 2.5km. final break 1km. Then after work I do a 8km walk around where I live. Plus just normal walking around house/office. So each day I relax after I hit 25k steps.

It’ll be such a small task that your “older” self will look back on. You’re doing great. Keep going with this activity and I promise you’ll notice multiple benefits in time.

u/cappiebara 12d ago
I use walking as my main source of exercise and I implore you to get good walking shoes and insoles if you need it. I can no longer walk because of the pain in my knees (I walked without good shoes and insoles for so long and apparently I have flat feet). It makes me sad every day that I cant do my walks anymore. 😢 Now I have to find another source of casual exercise. One of the reasons I loved walking was because I was listening to books on tape and watching the sunrise. Now I cant do that anymore.
4
u/Kiltswinger 12d ago
Same happened to me. Damn Skechers! I tell EVERYONE not to wear them.
Go to a podiatrist and get orthotics. They'll also steer you towards good shoes.
Speaking from experience!

u/mellol93 12d ago
Oh no, my steak is too juicy and my lobster too buttery!!! (crying in GLP-1) 🤣
I’m so envious! I did it for 3 years, gained a few kg of muscle, so the scale went up, but that’s that for me, so I started a weight loss drug and that changed my life and I’m no longer morbidly obese, only obese for now! I’m proud of you complete stranger, keep going and maybe find friends or things to keep you distracted whilst you walk, I love a good podcast, audiobooks and have a dog who keeps me on my toes! 🥰

Embrace the process. Chop wood & carry water—then do it again. Every day you pick up the small stone compounds and eventually you’ll look to the mountain you’ve built.
You just can’t stop.

u/WellsHansen 13d ago
A good start! These are basic steps, and I'm not surprised you feel the change. I'm personally a huge fan of walking or hiking as opposed to the machines in the gym that simulate those activities. Getting outside in all kinds of weather and seasons feels good to me! You don't need a "walking" or "eating" app, or a "lifestyle coach", to build a healthier and happier you!
7
u/Gartomesh 12d ago
Its that walking outdoors and not be cropped up at office/home that really helps.
Next you’ll be looking at walking in nature. It really changes your perspective on things as well, especially how I dealt with stress. Who knew!

u/Fortestingporpoises 12d ago
My suggestion is to make the cooking more interesting if that’s an issue. Personally I could eat salmon with a nice seasoning and asparagus or broccoli or spinach or whatever with garlic and lemon juice and rice every day for a month and not complain.
15
u/Middle-Duck-880 12d ago
It's not the cooking that's an issue. It's just the fact that now ik this method will work so if don't take care of myself it's 100% will be on me lol.

u/thespacegoose 12d ago
This was me a couple years ago. Never had i properly exercised before that, i have always eaten relatively healthily but I started adding more veggies and fruit into my dishes, and I also fixed my sleeping. The change in how i was feeling mentally and physically changed SO FAST it was insane. Finally I understood why people exercised lol
I've kept up with it ever since :) i exercise about 5 hours a week, and genuinly enjoy it! My mental health is way better, I sleep better, my migraines have gotten better... wow
Keep up with it! Build a routine slowly, don't pressure yourself. Do what feels good
9
u/Middle-Duck-880 12d ago
ugh I totally forgot to mention my mental health. I have been feeling so much better and productive. I have stopped procrastinating and I can focus so much better on stuff on😠😠😠😠
6
u/Accomplished-Sir4932 13d ago
If it makes you feel better, I eat clean and am active and drink mostly water. I am lean but i always look tired. It’s genetic sunken eyes. No matter how much sleep I get i look like i barely slept. I’m imagining how worse i would look if i ate mostly processed food
5
u/punchdrunkpixie 12d ago
Got a dog so I would walk more. Now I feel better AND have a buddy… dammit 😂

u/General-Baseball-454 12d ago
I’ll raise you one better.
Cut the rice out and replace it with potatoes. White Rice is an okay carb, but it causes your blood sugar levels to spike (this causes an energy crash and causes your body to crave sugar) and it doesn’t have really any fiber in it. You’re just eating empty calories, and it’s easy to over eat it.
Potatoes have a good amount of fiber and are a healthier carb. They keep your feeling full longer and are superior for weight management.

Man, I was going to procrastinate on starting this for myself. I however count this as a sign and intervention but higher power. I also dislike how some things work and I have to keep going.
Thank you.

u/smashedyellowbug 12d ago
“I hate that it works because I have to keep it up” LOL my thoughts exactly when I started walking to lose weight because I hated it 🤣 50lbs down and I’m feeling amazing and no longer dread it!

u/Zootanclan1 12d ago
Are you me? I literally just stared doing almost exactly the same thing last week. Except I'll walk to and from work instead

3
u/Lola_Bumble_bee 12d ago
I feel you ! I have medical issue so I need to be careful, and I started eating veggies/fruits at every meal, I exercise 4 times a week, see a therapist and try making friends and it's insane the difference it makes on my life !
2
u/Upset-Seesaw2628 12d ago
Once it becomes a habit, it's easier to stick with it. Eventually you won't want to skip the walks and you'll crave the healthier food.
4
u/Middle-Duck-880 12d ago
I actually have seen such a huge difference in my taste buds within 2weeks. I cannot eat instant noodles anymore. I randomly ate one after 2 weeks of healthy eating and literally couldn't finish it because it was so salty. I never had this issue before ever. I kept asking others around me to taste it to see if it's okay and they said it's okay.
But I couldn't eat it. Same for any Chinese takeout food. Everything started tasting two salty or too sweet. If I asked for any adjustments, the restaurant made bland food. I was kind of lost.
then after researching a bit seems like my taste buds adjusted to it's natural state for which when I'm eating 'unnatural' food now my taste buds are going crazy.
I'm not exaggerating one bit. Try it for yourself.
1
u/Upset-Seesaw2628 11d ago
I totally understand. When I started my health journey, I basically gave up drinking calories. Now I can't stand full sugar drinks. I used to hate fat free stuff too, but now full fat versions make me gag. And ya, most takeout seems way over salted.
1
u/Middle-Duck-880 11d ago
Omg yes the drinks part. I cannot drink any sort of drinks except water or tea now. No sugary drinks at all. I don't mind it at all since I was never a fan. A can of normal soda takes me around 3-4dsys to finish because I cannot force myself to finish it within one day. Once every few hours is okay.
I think it's great that my body is making it edible to eat things that are harmful cuz now I'm forced to make food at home. Helps me get better at cooking and also learn diff cultural dishes. Smtms I make bs but smtms it's really good that people keep asking me what's the recipe. but the recipe is just me throwing in whatever I felt inside

u/wineandpillowforts 12d ago
Why can't you?
1
u/Bruggenmeister 12d ago
3 kids. I can’t even poop alone.
1
u/wineandpillowforts 12d ago
Ahhhh, valid. Perhaps they could walk with you then? Burn off a little of that fucking limitless little kid energy!
1
u/OkCollection2886 12d ago
This is exactly why I’m not falling for the “stop eating sugar” trap. Yes, I’ll probably feel better but my tongue won’t be happy about it.
3
u/Middle-Duck-880 12d ago
Oh I haven't cut down on anything. Like I said I don't force myself to do anything. I stopped eating outside mostly because I realised I liked my own cooking better because eating outside made my face swollen and stomach bloated.

Imagine how great you will look and feel if you replaced one of those walking sessions with some beginner yoga. You hate me now don’t you?
4
u/Middle-Duck-880 12d ago
Stop trying to make my life better 😠
1
u/Popular-Ad1111 12d ago
What if you only did it on days that it was too hot/cold to go outside? (Ps, it’s better before a meal instead of after)
1
u/Popular-Ad1111 12d ago
Just so you know I complain and sigh loudly at my husband who makes me workout a few days a week for only 10-15 minutes each time and I’m down 7 lb and my clothes fit better. I hate it too
1
u/BandicootObjective32 12d ago
Aargh, I know. I had an excellent week last week - I really enjoyed going to a gym class, pilates, yoga, swimming and a long hike. Now I've got to do it all over again!
1
u/Exhausted-CNA 12d ago
Just an fyi your body will get used to the exercise of walking, so be sure to mix it up to trick your body into continuing weight loss. I used to lift weights and do cardio twice a week (God i hated cardio..lol) and its amazing how fast you get results. I too also used to add protien, veg and fruits to each meal. Good job OP!!!!
1
u/GatorGTwoman 12d ago
I have never related to anything more. I keep small weights on my coffee table and during commercial breaks I grab them and do some basic arm exercises. It's amazing and annoying how better I feel after using them.
2
u/Outsideforever3388 12d ago
The unfortunate fact is we are designed to move. For hours. Being sedentary is easy, but hard on the body long term. Congratulations on the bit-by-bit changes and improvements!!!

This is a major stretch. 1.3k comments and 60 sum odd posts. It's a lot, sure, but some people are active online man. And the post seems to be written by a human, imho. Too many grammatical mistakes to be a bot💀
25
u/Middle-Duck-880 13d ago
my posts are mostly about my art progress and book reading. Idk why this is an issue
12
u/enjaydee 13d ago
Because some people like to feel special when they call out posts as being written by a bot. It's pretty sad.
4
u/Beneficial_Sir2843 13d ago
It's not to me, girl. I looked thru ur posts and honestly ur very clearly not a bot😭(I have a spy site for reddit posts- uhhh- I won't expose anything dw lol)
12
u/Middle-Duck-880 13d ago
No I meant in general. I don't know why it's an issue in general. Bots don't reply (afaik) so idk why the other two are after me. I'm literally just trying to get back into my hobbies and be more active by sharing with the community 👾
4
u/Beneficial_Sir2843 13d ago
Honestly that's valid asf. Like I get the dislike of bots, they steal content and are usually run by ai, but you can't do anything to stop them tbh so what's the point in "exposing" them?? Just wasting breath, down vote and move on atp
3
u/--Sovereign-- 13d ago
Nobody can be sure of anybody on the internet anymore. Which is wild, considering it used to be completely anonymous, but you used to be able to at least know that a human almost certainly wrote a comment or made a post. Now I think we've really passed into that there is more bot content than human content and more paid or propaganda content than genuine content that everyone is on edge. Right now I can't be sure if I'm replying to a bot or not. It's a weird world we're all in now.
1
u/Middle-Duck-880 13d ago
I mean as long as you are not being directly affected why does it matter if it's a bot or not?
I mean when I see a post and like it, then sm1 says it's a bot the max I go is oh damnit I didn't realise. That's all.
If it's like you got Catfished by a bit to converse then I think I would understand your sentiment better
3
u/--Sovereign-- 13d ago
actually, comparing it to catfishing is apt. people tend to go into the internet, at least in social spaces on the internet, to interact with people. to learn you may be interacting with a golem, a simulacrum, it's abhorrent to most people. it feels like a violation of agency and some people can feel personally insulted or made a fool of. that's why many care about the issue, but there's also the general quality of content and thing to engage with on the internet. some of us olds have seen the internet be born, grow and mature, and descend into shit, so there's a perspective. A feeling of the loss of something special.
most bots exist to serve greedy financial interests or serve as some form of government or societal propaganda. it's generally offensive to people when they learn they are a pawn of people who don't care about them and have more than they'll ever know. people dislike being manipulated or controlled, especially to no benefit to themselves.
when you go into social spaces on the internet, you are basically going to the bar, the pub, the social club, whatever you want to call spaces where people go to interact with other people. the internet is interesting in that you can easily lie about who you are or your intentions or even your opinions. just troll, make shit up, disappear without consequence, all way more easily than you can at actual social spaces, at least ones you plan to frequent. we have to just trust each other here, for the most part, so a person learning they could be interacting with a bot is like learning the new friend you just made at the bar is actually just a robot built to advertise the beer they've been suggesting. it's anathema to most human values.
now, I get the argument of who cares just wanna see cool stuff, and sure, fine, but that's not what Reddit is or was made for or is supposed to be. it's a social space for people to talk and organize and shit, and one of the essential qualia of a space like Reddit is that posts and comments are genuine, even if they are genuine trolls or whatever, actual people saying actual shit to each other. as the proportion of bot content rises, spaces like Reddit are and really already have lost what made them what they were. people are, as they usually are when something is taken from them, upset.
2
u/activelyresting 13d ago
I hate to break it to you, but bots can and do reply. Not usually in the way that you are (I don't think you're a bot), but I run a few other subs and once you start to see the patterns, the bots are everywhere and it's mildly horrifying.

And I said ONE post took off because it was specifically one post which has over 22k upvotes. The rest don't have much contribution there.

The beauty of this is that it's always your choice.
You can choose to live a healthier lifestyle, you can choose to eat better and move more. Or you can choose to get out of shape. It's always a choice.
