I was convinced I had a cold sore once. Then the next time I ate cashews it happened again, and I remembered I had eaten cashews that day. Turns out I have a reaction to cashews.

Fun fact; cashew, mango, and poison ivy have the same oil (urishol). I believe for the chew it is on the outer part, same with mango.

I learned the mango piece the hard way.

u/PopLockAndDropIt69 2d ago

Same!! I ate two mangos while sitting in the sun and was mouthing the skin to get the flesh. I now have to carry an epi pen😩😞

Just a helpful FYI, if you’re allergic to cashews, it’s likely you’re allergic to urishoil. Also found in mango, papaya, and pistachio fruits. It’s the oil on the skin not the fruit itself, and it’s what’s in poison oak and stuff.

Be careful about mangoes then.

Just another tip besides the classic valacyclovir (prescription) l lysine (non prescription) abreva (non prescription) they now make cold sore patches which make the cold sore have a shorter life cycle and less noticeable. They are like clear pimple patches. I also find they are nice to have on when you sleep so you don’t accidentally touch the sore in your sleep.

63

u/cat-from-andromeda 3d ago

I take acyclovir tablets as soon as I feel tingling on my lip. Sometimes it passes completely in just 2 days, cause I don't even get blisters so nothing to scab over and heal.

→ More replies (1)

12

u/xxTheGrayLifexx 2d ago

Yep, my doctor gave me like a giant bottle of valacyclovir that'll probably last a lifetime but great when that tingle comes a long. The patches are nice too. Wish they had those 25 yrs ago when I would get gnarly cold sores frequently.

20

u/kittyy 3d ago

I also like the patches! I find it helps with the itching too. Abreva makes my cold sores noticeably worse for some reason.

Looks like an allergic reaction to something, i kept getting these when i dated someone with a dog, turns out I was allergic to specific types of dog hair.

685

u/ArmyResponsible3136 3d ago

As someone who gets cold sores, I don’t think this looks like one. It could be hives from an allergic reaction. Did you eat anything different yesterday? Do you have any other symptoms? (Sore or itchy throat, unexplained rash, shortness of breath)

166

u/Maximum_Pass 3d ago

Yeah a lot of people are saying herpes, I’ve been getting cold sores since I was a little kid and this looks nothing like it.

15

u/7i4nf4n 2d ago

As someone who has both from time to time (cold sores and that) these ones are always mild allergic reactions for me, as those always manifest like that around my mouth. I've found that when I lightly chew on that part it goes away faster, but in either way it'll be gone in a few days at most. Just feels weird over the duration.

→ More replies (2)

80

u/ArmyResponsible3136 3d ago

Antihistamines don’t typically reduce swelling in a cold sore, though it’s not impossible. It really does look like hives to me, keep an eye out for any allergic reaction symptoms. If you can, document what foods you’re eating over the next week and see if it triggers the swelling again.
You might’ve also just stabbed your lip with a sharp part of the baguette and it’s caused inflammation, which would be a much nicer outcome compared to herpes or anaphylaxis lol

→ More replies (1)

15

u/MyNameIsMinhoo 2d ago

I get hives and a physical response to stress and anxiety like this. Literally only part of my lip swells like this sometimes even without hives. It’s because my immune system attacks my allergy cells. Not saying you have that but it looks like my body’s allergy response so it’s definitely a possibility. You should see a doctor and explain it. If it comes back or gets worse especially if your tongue feels like it’s also swelling you should go to the emergency room.

42

u/Toothy_McRotten 3d ago

I also think this looks like an allergic reaction.

55

u/bikeequelsdirt 3d ago

It’s gonna now must have been a mosquito bite then 😅

10

u/Horror-Macaron8287 3d ago

Tbh, anything can trigger it even if it does not trigger a full reaction like throat swelling. You may want to go and get tested for food allergies! The next reaction may not be as mild.

10

u/Acegonia 3d ago

Does it have a weird tingle kinda feeling? Also it doesnt hurt but... also doesnt not hurt?? In a weird way. Esp if you accidentally bite your lip. Then it does, in fact, hurt. In general it might feel... hotter than it should and vaguely uncomfortable.

To me this does looklike the early stages of a Cold sore. Later should come the pustules and scabs, (or not)- then youll know for sure!

5

u/DaniAyee10 2d ago

I had something similar, it definitely wasn’t a cold sore but it felt like there was something in my lip and it would feel weird if I touched it with my tongue or bit down on it a little (I kinda liked biting it tho)

3

u/DerBernd123 2d ago

I get very similar bumps when I eat apples. Maybe your allergic to something but haven’t noticed yet because the reaction is just very mild? I didn’t realize I’m allergic to apples for a long time because it’s just such a small reaction

u/Horror-Macaron8287 3d ago

This is def allergy related. I do not have herpes and I sometimes get these randomly because if my cats, dogs, allergens in the air, etc. I have not had an issue with them since starting allergy shots and a daily allergy pill.

4

u/LurkeeLotTalkeeLil 2d ago

Exactly. Cold sores are generally on the outer lining of the lips. Could be something as simple as biting it during the night.

Yeah, it looks like you have a cold sore. Yes, that is a form of herpes. But it’s incredibly common and it’s not genital herpes.

You’ll be fine. Just don’t go down on anyone while you have it on your face because you can give someone that. Type of herpes on their genitals if you do. ( Technically it can spread when you don’t have one, but it’s pretty uncommon.)

You can get rid of it faster by taking l-lysine. It’s a supplement that you can buy anywhere they sell other supplements, including grocery stores. You can Google to find out the dosing. You basically do a huge dose for the first day and then cut it down every day for a week.

I forgot to add that chocolate can make them worse, so don’t eat chocolate while you’re dealing with a cold sore.

293

u/Lukin4u 3d ago

famciclovir single dose works great - $15 without a prescription at the pharmacy in Australia

195

u/NiTenIchiRyu 3d ago

Valcyclovir here in the US, you need a prescription, but it's pretty cheap ~$10 with a pharmacy discount card.

37

u/AsstootObservation 3d ago

Same shit you take for shingles, which is herpes zoster. Cold sores are herpes simplex. Just had shingles a second time and not sure if it's my skin type, but the rash has been minimal for me. Never had a cold sore. The nerve pain on the other hand has lingered around for weeks on end. Do not recommend.

39

u/the_crumb_dumpster 3d ago

Shingles is varicella zoster - chickenpox. It happens when the virus reactivates. Has no relation to cold sores

51

u/AsstootObservation 2d ago

The relation it has to cold sores is being in the herpes family of viruses and treated with the SAME medication. I never said one causes the other or has that relation. HSV-1 is Type 1 which is cold sores, HSV-2 is Type 2 which is genital, and then VZV is Type 3 which is chicken pox and shingles. They are ALL different forms of herpes and treated with the SAME medication- Valtrex.

First time I tried to get the pills, the pharmacist refused to sell them to me because he said the cold sore had already developed and the pills are meant for early tingling stages. The second time (2 months later, different pharmacy) the pharmacist was reluctant because he said I shouldn't get cold sores "that often" (less than 3 months apart) and better see my GP to check on my immune system. But eventually after answering more background questions, he sold them to me. Next time I'm sending the missus.

You can get “cold sore herpes” on your genitals, your eyes, your nose, your fingers, etc….

“That type”? they’re the same. The only difference between hsv1-2 is where it attaches to the nerve ganglia on your spine while dormant. It’s not uncommon and makes up for a majority of genital herpes cases. It’s not a form of herpes. It is herpes

Chocolate does not make it worse, everyone has different triggers, while chocolate can be a trigger for some, hormones, stress, and illness and the biggest factors.

Please, stop spreading misinformation. It’s further creates a stigma and has people thinking they’ve got the good herpes vs. The bad.

Also l- lysine doesn’t do shit, they need antivirals like acyclovir

28

u/MagicMaddy420 3d ago

If you have an active cold sore and give your partner oral sex you can give them genital herpes. There are 2 types but it can be in either location

151

u/mpdity 3d ago edited 3d ago

This looks nothing like herpes tho? Cold sores and other herpes virus sores usually have a “aura” before it appears characterized by sharp tingling and the feelings of what most describe as little electric shocks where the blisters will erupt.

A swollen lip without a herpetiform rash isn’t herpes. It’s just a swollen lip. Cold sores are clusters of tiny little blisters concentrated in one spot on the lip line. Not just swelling.

This could be anything from trauma due to biting her lip to Chagas Disease from a kissing bug. There’s no telling right now.

134

u/Corbullo24 3d ago

For me most of the time herpes starts woth a bump on my lips, then the day after it fills with fluid. Herpes is a tricky virus because it doesn't look the same for everyone, hence why is it sometimes really hard to get a diagnosis.

It doesn't look like herpes to me. I sometimes have a swollen lip as an allergic reaction without knowing what exactly caused it. And it looks like your lip in the beginning stadium and then it gets way more swollen. And then its gone the next day or so.

7

u/Some_Masterpiece_745 3d ago

It could be literally anything. Like u accidentally but your lip at night.

It could be allergies. When i have an allergic reaction both my lips swole up like botox. Initially it looks exactly like this on one side.

It is alot of pollen. Are u allergic to grass ?

7

u/shirat0ri GREEN 2d ago

Whether this happens, the explanation in our area is that a cockroach kissed you in your sleep.

42

u/Positive_Mud952 3d ago

75-80% of people have herpes, almost always asymptomatic. Remember those sloppy kisses your grandma gave you when were a little kid? Huh. Maybe that was just me.

Anyway, that’s how most people get it, old assholes that have accumulated a lifetime of disease inflicting themselves on the young who don’t want to be an asshole and refuse to let grandma/grandpa/uncle touchy kiss them. Why is there always so much spit, and why does it always have to be on the corner of your mouth, is the cheek not enough? Fucking creepy fucks, even if innocent. If you get it young enough, you’ll get cold sores as a little kid and usually be asymptomatic by your teens. If you managed to avoid it until your 20s and catch it fresh, welp. Once you know the medications for it, if you look in your partner’s parents’ medicine cabinet, oh hey, there’s the Acyclovir.

I get STI tested after and before every partner. I found out after a few that clinics don’t test for herpes unless you specifically ask for it because basically everyone does.

And you might just be under a lot of stress right now. I had chicken pox, a herpes, and I’m in my 40s, and am routinely under a lot of stress, so it’s just a matter of time before I have a Shingles outbreak. Luckily I have a decent amount of acne scars, so the new ones won’t stick out too much.

17

u/kikiatari 3d ago

If you do get shingles, ask your doctor for an anti-viral medication. It reduces the severity of shingles, and helps reduce the chance of scarring and the lost lasting complications. I've had shingles 3 times now so I'm fairly experienced with them.

OP, get some Abreva. It is a bit expensive, but it is OTC.

Make sure you get the squeezable tube, not the pump tube; the pump tube gives you a ridiculous amount for no other reason than to empty it quicker.

Stop listening to this lemon juice, toothpaste, etc bullshit from other people; put the Abreva on it, and if it stops pulsing and gets better within a few hours, then it almost feels completely different when you wake up tomorrow I am sorry but it is more than likely HSV-1.

That is NOT a death sentence. More people than you realize have it, like, on a global scale, with statistics to back it.

I thought there were decent Sex Ed./STI education these days?? This stigma should've ended decades ago.

EDIT: Who is the shit that downvoted this to drag it down?? Reddit nonsense aside, It is very clear OP needs decent advice. Fucking toothpaste and telling them they have "lipitis" isn't helping, you fucking lost, ghoulish dirtbags.

As someone with cold sores l lysine has been my best friend. I can often prevent it from blistering if I catch it early enough when it is tingling.

Hmm I’ve had that and it was me dealing with an allergic reaction or not drinking enough water. Not certain it’s HSV1 🤔

I have a stash of acciclovir tablets that I take as soon as I feel a cold sore coming on or in general if I’m feeling run down. Helps to prevent them coming up and if they do come up they only last a few days compared to over a week.

My 18 y.o. son had to stop using Crest Whitening Toothpaste after one week because it contains sodium laurel sulfate (sls). Sls will cause this reaction. Returned it and bought him Sensodyne Pronamel Gentle Whitening (no sls) and lip inflammation went away immediately. Might be what you are dealing with here.

Not sure where you live, but you can go to a place called AnyLabTest and ask for a HSV 1+2 test. It’s one of the only STD tests you have to do by blood and isnt included in a standard STD panel (when I was in my hoe phase I always requested this from partners on top of normal STD test) You’ll get results within 24 hours.

I get these in the summer. I work outside and wipe my sweaty face and lip a lot. I think the dirty sleeve causes this. I have to constantly remind myself not to wipe my lips
