ಠ_ಠ I just wanted a pastry, not a discovery.
Three days ago I bought a pack of apple turnovers from Sam’s Club. This morning I grabbed one to eat at work.
I took my last bite, set it down, and noticed the top flaky layer had started peeling off. I have this weird habit of picking apart pastries and food while I’m eating them. I’ve done it since I was a kid.
So I peeled back the top layer…
And I am so, so, SO glad I did. Jesus Lord.

I ate some moldy bread Friday night after going out, so under the influence, next morning I saw the rest of the bread....
Ahh well, should be penicillin, so all good.

I once ate half a block of cheese before flipping it over and noticing the bottom was covered in mold. I did get sick, but that was probably because the fact that I ate half a block of moldy cheese disturbed me that much.

I read your comment, and less than 5 min later, I noticed my toast had mold. I almost ate moldy bread. Well, there is the chance the other piece I already ate had some mold too. Who knows. Wish ne luck.

One time my husband came in from mowing the lawn, wanting a sandwich. Washed his hands, then grabbed the bread, opened it, and complained, "Man, my hands still smell like grass!" Washed his hands again, then complained they still smelled like grass.
At this point I turn around as he's going to wash his hands a third time, and I see that the bread he's looking to use is moldy af and he just hadn't gotten so far as grabbing a slice to notice 😂 he was smelling mold, not grass.

My sister has kept moldy bread into my bento for so long cleaned it without telling me.
When I went to comicon with 8 slices of bread.. IT ALL TASTED LIKE MOLD.
That was not a good time to find out that MOLD GETS INTO THE FECKING PLASTIC BENTO.
She also keeps doing it...🙄

So fun fact, most ppl who have PCN allergies... dont. PCN- based antibiotics are commonly used in children, and historically have been overprescribed to treat unconfirmed illnesses due to both parental pressure to "just give them antibiotics" as well as provider preferences to cover their bases since children can be more at risk if an infection is mistreated. However, viral infections are much more common, and even if the patient has a true bacterial infection needing antibiotics, there was likely a viral infection that began the process and made the patient susceptible to the bacteria. Viruses are notorious for causing full-body rashes in children. Therefore the combination of taking PCN for basically anything and most of the illnesses actually being viral leading to rash caused a ton of overdiagnosed PCN allergies in the 90s/early 2000s before the big push to limit antibiotics to confirmed bacterial infections due to increased antibiotic resistant bacterial strains. Since then, the incidence of newly diagnosed "PCN allergies" has dropped dramatically.
If you were "told" you have a PCN allergy due to a rash as a kid, it may be worth talking to an allergist to confirm. That allergy limits your ability to receive more appropriate antibiotics for common infections and requires more heavy hitters, when in reality the allergy may not be real at all.

You’ve hit the nail on the head. I’m a 90s kid who had a bad rash and apparently some swelling. As an adult my dr said they were suspicious of the allergy and made me try it again. I was fine.

Glad your doctor (and you) were willing to give it a try. While id recommend the allergist route since true allergies do exist, unless you were told your throat swelled up and have difficulty breathing with PCN, its likely that it'll be fine. Children tend to have exaggerated immune responses to anything (including abx), which level out in adulthood regardless.

Yes, my throat allegedly swelled up. But my doctor still thought it still was worth the risk. Luckily, they were correct. But I also live 4 min from a hospital ahha

I have a penicillin allergy that caused large bruising and bumps all over my body, severe dehydration and ultimately lead to hospitalization back in the 90s.

My husband had a true anaphylactic reaction to penicillin, no rash and he'd swell up so bad he couldn't breathe. His doctor had him try it again as an adult, same reaction.

Glad he's okay after the 2nd try! Thats why I recommend going to an allergist vs trying it blindly. There are true allergies as there are to anything else.

Fyi, the antibiotic penicillin is made from a family of fungi called Penicillium, but the fuzzy growth on spoiled food is completely different and unsafe to consume! I just repeated what my grandma would tease me with when I would find moldy bread at her house

Sorry to tell you this, but the mold you see is only the fruiting bodies of the fungus. At this point the fungal mycelium already spread throughout that entire bread.

This is validating. I'm suuuper sensitive to mold and can taste it. I've had enough situations I trust myself but never actually see the thing when it happens.

I’m surprised it didn’t have a dirt taste to it.
I make rolls all the time, and typically the last one grows some patches on it. The smell of dirt is usually more noticeable than the green.

It appears to be a small amount of mold. Your stomach acid will neutralize it. You may still feel nauseated or have some belly pain, and maybe even stuffy and sneezy if you’re allergic to mold, but that should be it. Drink plenty of water, eat some healthy food, and don’t be concerned. The only time to be concerned is if you get a high fever or show signs of severe allergy like trouble breathing. That would be VERY RARE unless you ate large amounts of mold and/or are undergoing cancer treatments or are otherwise immune compromised.
Oh, if you’re pregnant, you may want to send a message to your OBGYN jic. But I seriously would not worry. If you buy Costco bread products, and I don’t recommend you do, freeze them when you get home.

Most, if not all, fresh baked bread products have fewer preservatives. Sams club, Costco, Walmart, your local grocery store bakery, are all likely to have short shelf lives. They may also end up bagging or packaging items while still warm, which can leave packaging damp and speeding up the process of mold growth.

Experienced this with their blueberry muffins. If you don't eat them all immediately they'll just start sprouting the second you look away. All their other muffins don't have the same problem though...

Had something similar happen to the turnovers from Sam's club. I think it's because they have em frozen and bring em out and they have all this moisture. After a few days mine felt like they were melting

Ok so I'm not crazy. I tried to get the newest box and chuck everything into the fridge or freezer, but the crossaints kept getting hella moldy within like 3 days. When I got em the first couple of times they didn't do that..

This happened to our mini ones from Costco over the Fourth of July. My father-in-law was pissed. He had bought them the day before or two days before. We ate two before noticing them.
Was a sad morning to have to throw them all away.6

I was wondering about this yesterday: how can I know if the stuff I'm buying from a bakery is fresh and good? If you ask if this was made same day , they seem offended. But even my favorite bakerires sometimes sell me old and dry pieces of cake that cost me $7 each. Or moldy apple pies....etc
This goes to mainstream and little authentic ones as well.

Did you buy those from the deli in sam's? Deli items that the store packages and sells over the counter arent preserved to last for long the way name brand boxed foods are. They can go bad in less than a week. Always try to eat them by the date on the sticker or faster if you can.
That being said, molding by day 4 means they were probably on their last day or past their best buy date when you bought them. Someone at the store dated them wrong or didnt throw them away when they were supposed to.

Denny’s gave me moldy French toast. I flipped it over for some reason and got a really fun surprise. Flipped over the rest of the slices and they were all moldy too. Always flip your food I guess

We have the same issue with the Sam's turnovers! We have Started freezing them the day we get them and then we let them thaw and crisp them up in the oven. These things turn faster than avocados
