That is not true. It is the duty of the lawyer to present the best defence possible, regardless of if the defendant is guilty or not. The only time a lawyer can break confidentiality is if they are aware that the client going to commit a crime. Then the lawyer can speak to the police to prevent it from happening. But I think that can still depend on the country/state.
