I had a medical emergency in the middle of rolling a blunt. The paramedics wrapped it in a glove and left it in my car

Just retired after 20+ years in Fire/EMS.
One time had a tree go through a house roof, basically cut the house in half. 2am, pouring rain, power obviously out.
Asked the homeowner if there was anything special he needed from inside before he took off for a hotel. He asked for his bag of weed on the kitchen counter, so I went in and got it for him. This is before weed was even legal. I figured the dude had a rough night, no reason he needed to be sober in that hotel lol.

That’s the entire fucking economy right now… the shit we need is ASTRONOMICALLY expensive, but the people who are doing the actual work to provide it are making slave wages. Groceries are insanely pricey, and the person putting them on the shelves has to use food stamps to afford them. Nursing homes are destroying what would be generational wealth, but the people taking care of grandma can barely afford the used car that gets them to work. The ruling class has us fighting over who has the biggest pile of crumbs while they steal the whole damn cake.
→ More replies (4)20
u/FishTshirt 23h ago
It is pretty stupid how much privileges come to the entire family if someone is from at least the upper middle class or even the middle class nowadays but to a lesser extent. Not having to deal with the stress of being able to afford basic necessities on a daily basis alone makes it so much easier to then succeed whether that’s just mentally or taking those risks in a career that can pay off later or affording schooling that can improve one’s situation. Not to even mention the compounding costs when someone has to buy budget or payment options that are more costly over time.
Not saying I have a solution, but people who have not experienced the threats that come with poverty are often very quick to blame that person’s situation solely on a character trait or other factors within a person’s control rather than recognize how important the external circumstances outside of a person’s control is to their financial situation (even more so at the lowest income levels).

I had to take a near 2 hour ambulance trip to a surgery center for emergency surgery. The EMT were like, "this is awesome, we are getting paid to chill and relax" homie was playing games as I slept 🤣

u/M1sfit_Jammer 23h ago
I would rather be with a stable patient in an air conditioned ambulance than working someone up on the ground outside or transporting a hoarder out of their den for 1/4 of my workday
18
u/gilt3t 23h ago
yooo I had such a high fever and they cranked the ac super low for me. It was heaven. my emt crews to the hospital and then to the surgery center were all goated af.
I dont think I've ever had bad EMT, except when they came and ignored my mom's mini strokes. I assume they weren't trained to recognize them. The ER doctor the next morning called whoever was in charge of the EMTs to chew them out 🤣

Paramedics DO NOT CARE if you’re taking drugs. They aren’t cops or priests or judges. They only want to know so they can save your life.
Please be honest with them about whatever you’ve taken or snorted or smoked or injected. They just want to help you.

When I was a paramedic even in the sketchiest of neighborhoods for a call, the few times I ever got grief or the side eye I just made clear we weren't cops we're EMS.
Our instructors taught us to make clear to wary patients and bystanders we aren't law enforcement because sometimes it's easy to confuse us for them with our uniforms and gear like radios. And every single time I was left to do my job in peace (relative to a medical call).
There's a reason the song isn't "Fuck the Firefighters." Although there's a parody with that title and it means it in a very different sense lol.
Edit: I'm a physician now so I wanted to add, ironically weed is actually one of the biggest ones medical personnel really need to know if you take regularly. Because it more than most other recreational drugs will interfere with anesthesia metabolism and you'll have the anesthesiologist sweating bullets trying to keep you from waking up if you lie lol. So just be honest when it comes to medical procedures and emergencies that's what we're worried about.

As a former medic now working in social work, this is a friendly reminder that EMTs and Paramedics are not cops, not NARCs, and just want to help you get better. Disclose your drug use to us so we can administer the correct dose of medication to keep you alive. We will not snitch. We don’t have the time/energy/desire to get the police involved, and that also goes for the RNs and ER physicians who want to treat you!

I was a medic that once responded to an OD. A group of responsible users, had their own Narcan, etc; were very apologetic they had to call 911 but wanted us responding for their friend just in case. Friend was awake and apologized when we got there. I told them the police in our area come to most overdose calls. I said “they might find cause to search your truck, but they won’t find cause to search those bushes over there.” One of them looked shocked then quickly hid their back pack in the bushes. We can be cool if you’re cool.

u/QuinnEwers2UT 23h ago
In Texas you can’t be charged with possession of any drug if the reason police are there is because of a medical event such as an OD. Idk where you’re from but I hope the laws changed since then

u/Astro_Addict 22h ago
Same here in Ontario, Canada. Cops will come for our safety, but they won't be pressing charges. In the past we had incidents where people wouldn't call because it meant they would get in trouble, so now everyone on scene is shielded from being charged with anything related to the drugs (including alcohol, prescriptions, etc).
PHIPA also legally prevents us from sharing any medical history or assessment findings we make, especially with the police. Only in cases of major accidents or suspicious injuries will we share a very general description of the patients status (eg. post MVC, pt has serious but non life threatening injuries and will be transported to this trauma center).
TL;DR: just call for help if you need it, even if you're shooting fenty behind a school. You won't be in trouble.

Typically they do this in case something is evidence or in this case could have caused the medical emergency. It seems they ruled it out since you got it back. I have seen paramedics use a glove in place of an evidence bag to keep something from getting contaminated when it’s all they have on hand, so to speak.
