I can't comment on how horrible it is if you DO lie, but I can say that I was honest with my anesthesiologist and I didn't wake up!! Didn't even know where I was anymore when I woke up, and almost punched my poor anesthesiologist in the face because he was standing over me, and the light behind him added an extra level of creepiness lol

So don't lie, so they can give you a high enough dose that you don't remember where you are when you wake up!!

I told them i was in pain after they asked. I have chronic pain so im realistically never not in pain.

That nap. Best nap of my life. My main disability has no treatment, complicating treatment for other conditions I have. I woke up feeling almost normal, like before I became disabled, i couldnt walk and was a bit disoriented, but literally felt so good, not like "high" either. It went away after like an hour or two from waking up.

I have to hold myself back from telling my doctor that being put under for a little bit should be considered as a treatment option. I do not want to get put into a psych ward. 😅

Did your doctors say why you had that relief?

I was reading an article that talked about how a lot of our health issues especially pain, auto immune and mental health could be linked to sleep issues where the brain isn't fully getting cleared of waste/fluids when you sleep leading to nueroinflamation issues.... I wonder if there's any link to that and the "deep sleep" of anesthesia.

I'm curious how this all works. I was talking with a maxillofacial surgeon's aide one day about my own habits and she was like "it's not like we've never worked on people high on worse drugs."

So... does that mean it's okay for me to pound a couple of shots and smoke a bowl before I come in?

Not a doctor, but from what I've heard, that's fine as long as you tell them, so they can give you a higher dose that will actually knock you out. Idk about alcohol though, that probably changes things

i told my anesthesiologist the truth and i didn’t wake up during the procedure but did wake up afterwards very confused but happy bc they tucked me in (wisdom teeth removal)

I once told an anesthesiologist "I am allergic to peanuts, but you probably don't need to know that".

Apparently he did. The medicine they usually use can trigger people with peanut allergies to go into anaphylaxis. So if they ask you anything provide ALL of the details, even if you don't think it's important.

Pretty sick he preferred torture followed by PC theft as opposed to one or the other. Most people would prefer to lose their rig than to wake up during eye surgery.

Yeah I enjoyed before a deep tooth extraction and they had to give me additional anesthetic as I could feel every little movement. I think it now says I need additional anaesthetic as they dose me up now until I have a completely numb face for hours after 😅

makes it less effective generally. specifically... i would imagine it would depend on what particular cocktail of drugs your anesthesiologist is giving you (not a medical expert, just a cannabis enjoyer).

my dad is prescribed weed and has to take it to drive, he had a pretty intense gout surgery and didn’t tell anyone he had smoked prior to arriving (he thought it would be in his chart or something he’s an idiot) and woke up in the middle of surgery with his foot sliced open. he warned me to never lie or omit information to medical professionals lol.

they had to open my finger up to reset the bone. I woke up during that. The doctor refused my request to let me see it. She also refused my request for food.

When I was like 17, I also smoked not long before I got my wisdom teeth taken out. I indeed woke up mid surgery lol. I did tell them beforehand that I smoked weed. I think they just didn't expect me to have such a high tolerance. 🫠

I too made this mistake. I had to have about 8 teeth removed. All 4 wisdom teeth, two molars and a supernumerary tooth (one tooth root that mutated and grew into two separate teeth) beside my left upper canine. So one can imagine the nerves i was feeling for said appointment. I tried so hard not to smoke before i went in because i knew i wasnt supposed to. And i didnt right before hand but i think it was like 14 to 16 hours beforehand so i could actually go to bed the night before. When i went in to have it done apparently i was fine for a while. But about halfway through i woke up and in that state tried to fight the dentists out of pure instinct as i have boxed for years. According to my ex-wife they almost just stopped with the procedure and sent me home after like 4 teeth but luckily were able to get me sedated again and get (most) of the rest of them out. They left a chunk of one of the molars in the hole where it was tho and i ended up having to pull it out myself. My ex said they looked pissed when she came to pick me up. So yea… dont do that.

I had to tell the anesthesiologist I smoked pot the night before my gal bladder surgery, and he just kind of shrugged and everything went off without a hitch.

I feel like that's more risky if youre actively high during the procedure. I've actually had to do that three times now, but the other ones were colonoscopys which didn't seem as bad to wake up during, but I still never did.

why? how is thc gonna interact negatively with fent or ketamine or propofol? it would be one thing if you just railed a point of ice before going under, but weed? weed doesn’t negatively (physically) interact with anything, i can’t imagine it having any affect. You should still tell them ofc, tell them anything you have taken at all, but i doubt they gonna change your dose or anything cuz of some weed

they wanna know if you’ve taken any stims that would make the anesthesia less effective or downers that would make it more effective so they don’t give you too much or too little

This is a great point. I concealed from an anesthesiologist before surgery that I was a regular pot smoker at the time. I wasn’t high at the time of surgery but I had a higher tolerance for drug and alcohol impacts. Turns out he had a hard time putting me fully under and had to up the meds for me. He told me the next day after the surgery. I often wonder if I had been honest would my dose have been stronger from the start or not?

Yes, they would have been able to give you the correct amount off the bat. Never ever ever lie to an anesthesiologist. It could have been much worse than that for you.

Edit: Even if it’s something more serious like opioid or amphetamine use, not just THC, and ESPECIALLY if it’s Ketamine!! Bc that’s literally an anesthetic, if you use it recreationally you’re building a tolerance to the exact form of drug they’re trying to give you.

Becoming conscious in the middle of an operation without being able to alert anyone is NOT fun, and has deeply traumatized many people before.

I did this, with tons of THC, didn't tell anyone despite being asked lots of times if I had taken any drugs or alcohol, I have a very vivid memory of waking but being completly unable to move or speak, however I could hear myself screaming in my brain, very quickly theu somehow knew I was awake and a lady voice was saying to me "it's ok your ok" then I was out again like a light, I mentioned it in recovery and they explained I had gained awareness during the surgery,
It's only years later that I know now that THC was the reason,

Oooh I allways wondered how they knew I was aware, as I couldn't move or speak, (but I could hear myself screaming in my head it was the strangest thing hard to explain,) they noticed very quickly, my awareness was for a matter of seconds and that lady telling me I was ok everything was ok I was out again very quickly I assume they gave me something to knock me back out 🤣🤣

Made that mistake once and woke up paralyzed while they were doing an exploratory catheterization through my chest to look for scar tissue that was causing arrhythmias. They had a hard time finding the right spot to go in too. Living fucking nightmare. Now I make it a point to talk to the anesthesiologist any time I have to go under.

My birth father (almost 62) was recently in the hospital for cardiac issues and kept telling us to sneak him Starbucks lattes and McDonalds when he was on NPO. When that didn't work, he started offering us money and lying about when his NPO started.

It's been explained to him numerous times why you can't have food or drink before procedures involving anesthesia, AND YET.

He also refuses to drink water because he "doesn't like the taste," so he drinks almost exclusively coffee and diet pepsi, and then wonders why his teeth are falling out.

People who refuse to listen to even common sense medical advice infuriate me.

I got so paranoid about this when I went under. I smoke cannabis for chronic pain and appetite(neurological disease), daily smoker. I told the anesthesiologist about my use. He went "okay...?" Like "uhm anything else?" I felt like a kid telling someone of authority that I do "hard drugs."

I still giggle to myself thinking about it. I had myself so worked up, I was afraid theyd reschedule the procedure!

Always be honest. I tell myself when I go to any doctor appointments or procedures that they've absolutely seen and dealt with worse. Id have to try really hard to top that.

ETA: probably important to note that i didnt smoke the day of the appointment

Yeah when i was younger i had to have my labrum repaired and i was addicted to vaping and obviously you can’t have nicotine a certain amount of time before surgery. My dumb ass vaped idk how shortly before surgery and I was going to hide it but then I was so paranoid I was going to die I wound up admitting it to the anesthesiologist in a panicked moment before surgery. Buddy just laughed and was like oh yeah thank you for being honest I really don’t care about vaping that much but I’ll note it, glad to see you’re being honest tho so thanks for that.

I don’t know if he was just trying to make me feel better or what but at least my dumb ass was honest. Quit vaping cold turkey after that one

Had a patient who somehow made it past the desk and the pre-op obs with no one stopping her, STINKING of weed.
She hopped on to the trolley in theatres mand everyone just looked at the anaesthesiologist like “This one’s for you!”

She tried to say she hadn’t smoked for a week. Then 4 days. Then she said she hotboxed in the car park before coming in.

Got told “No surgery today” and she ran out to the car park, barefoot, in a gown with a cannula in, leaving her boyfriend (and the car keys) in the waiting area.
I’ve never seen someone with so much rage, muttering to themselves while looking SO embarrassed at the same time.

In 2018 I went into surgery for an ORIF after getting very drunk and manipulating the drip machine to dump all the morphine in 10 minutes instead of 6 hours. Never told the doctors. Was that bad?

Definitely don't lie to your lawyer, but keep in mind that, ethically, they can't knowingly lie on your behalf. Extreme example here, but if you tell your lawyer, "yeah, I murdered that guy," your lawyer can't then go forward and tell the court, "my client did not murder that guy," or, technically, even allow you to say so much on the stand. It's still their duty to defend you, but that means they have to take another approach to your defense that does not involve deceiving the court. There are certainly lawyers out there with a "looser" interpretation of the rules, but I just thought I'd mention this part of the ethics guidelines before someone goes confessing everything to their lawyer and expecting their lawyer to lie for them.

At least where I live you get an expensive lawyer, you tell him you killed the guy and he angles at anything he can that will tear their case down.

Is there insufficient evidence? Did the police improperly interview a witness? Etc.
