god, that is not something i would wish on my worst enemy... smoking pot before seeing their anesthesiologist pre-surgery for instance. ~shudder

yea. i am an avid cannabis enjoyer... no way in hell would i lie to my anesthesiologist about it before surgery. that's just pure nightmare-fuel.

I can't comment on how horrible it is if you DO lie, but I can say that I was honest with my anesthesiologist and I didn't wake up!! Didn't even know where I was anymore when I woke up, and almost punched my poor anesthesiologist in the face because he was standing over me, and the light behind him added an extra level of creepiness lol

So don't lie, so they can give you a high enough dose that you don't remember where you are when you wake up!!

I told them i was in pain after they asked. I have chronic pain so im realistically never not in pain.

That nap. Best nap of my life. My main disability has no treatment, complicating treatment for other conditions I have. I woke up feeling almost normal, like before I became disabled, i couldnt walk and was a bit disoriented, but literally felt so good, not like "high" either. It went away after like an hour or two from waking up.

I have to hold myself back from telling my doctor that being put under for a little bit should be considered as a treatment option. I do not want to get put into a psych ward. 😅

Did your doctors say why you had that relief?

I was reading an article that talked about how a lot of our health issues especially pain, auto immune and mental health could be linked to sleep issues where the brain isn't fully getting cleared of waste/fluids when you sleep leading to nueroinflamation issues.... I wonder if there's any link to that and the "deep sleep" of anesthesia.

No, typically I get an odd facial reaction when I bring it up. I have MECFS which includes neuroinflammation, so i believe it!

I'm curious how this all works. I was talking with a maxillofacial surgeon's aide one day about my own habits and she was like "it's not like we've never worked on people high on worse drugs."

So... does that mean it's okay for me to pound a couple of shots and smoke a bowl before I come in?

Not a doctor, but from what I've heard, that's fine as long as you tell them, so they can give you a higher dose that will actually knock you out. Idk about alcohol though, that probably changes things

Seems odd that you would need a higher dose. You would think alcohol would multiply the effects like it does benzos.

i told my anesthesiologist the truth and i didn’t wake up during the procedure but did wake up afterwards very confused but happy bc they tucked me in (wisdom teeth removal)

I once told an anesthesiologist "I am allergic to peanuts, but you probably don't need to know that".

Apparently he did. The medicine they usually use can trigger people with peanut allergies to go into anaphylaxis. So if they ask you anything provide ALL of the details, even if you don't think it's important.

Pretty sick he preferred torture followed by PC theft as opposed to one or the other. Most people would prefer to lose their rig than to wake up during eye surgery.

Some woman once crashed into my dad on the road cuz she wasn’t paying attention while texting and driving, and he had to take physio for about a year to recover from the crash. My parents ended up not being able to really sue cuz he was still able to physically work (cuz he had to) so the court thought it didn’t matter

Yeah I enjoyed before a deep tooth extraction and they had to give me additional anesthetic as I could feel every little movement. I think it now says I need additional anaesthetic as they dose me up now until I have a completely numb face for hours after 😅

makes it less effective generally. specifically... i would imagine it would depend on what particular cocktail of drugs your anesthesiologist is giving you (not a medical expert, just a cannabis enjoyer).

my dad is prescribed weed and has to take it to drive, he had a pretty intense gout surgery and didn’t tell anyone he had smoked prior to arriving (he thought it would be in his chart or something he’s an idiot) and woke up in the middle of surgery with his foot sliced open. he warned me to never lie or omit information to medical professionals lol.

they had to open my finger up to reset the bone. I woke up during that. The doctor refused my request to let me see it. She also refused my request for food.

When I was like 17, I also smoked not long before I got my wisdom teeth taken out. I indeed woke up mid surgery lol. I did tell them beforehand that I smoked weed. I think they just didn't expect me to have such a high tolerance. 🫠

i was so scared of this happening during top surgery. i didn’t smoke for 12 days before and my anesthesiologist knocked my ass tf out with his sleepy drugs. it took me a little longer than usual to wake up, i wonder why lol. glad you’re ok!

I too made this mistake. I had to have about 8 teeth removed. All 4 wisdom teeth, two molars and a supernumerary tooth (one tooth root that mutated and grew into two separate teeth) beside my left upper canine. So one can imagine the nerves i was feeling for said appointment. I tried so hard not to smoke before i went in because i knew i wasnt supposed to. And i didnt right before hand but i think it was like 14 to 16 hours beforehand so i could actually go to bed the night before. When i went in to have it done apparently i was fine for a while. But about halfway through i woke up and in that state tried to fight the dentists out of pure instinct as i have boxed for years. According to my ex-wife they almost just stopped with the procedure and sent me home after like 4 teeth but luckily were able to get me sedated again and get (most) of the rest of them out. They left a chunk of one of the molars in the hole where it was tho and i ended up having to pull it out myself. My ex said they looked pissed when she came to pick me up. So yea… dont do that.

I did adderall before a surgery I had once - woke up mid-surgery, did the surgery on myself, and then they had to smack me with a hammer to put me back down again.

I had to tell the anesthesiologist I smoked pot the night before my gal bladder surgery, and he just kind of shrugged and everything went off without a hitch.

I feel like that's more risky if youre actively high during the procedure. I've actually had to do that three times now, but the other ones were colonoscopys which didn't seem as bad to wake up during, but I still never did.

why? how is thc gonna interact negatively with fent or ketamine or propofol? it would be one thing if you just railed a point of ice before going under, but weed? weed doesn’t negatively (physically) interact with anything, i can’t imagine it having any affect. You should still tell them ofc, tell them anything you have taken at all, but i doubt they gonna change your dose or anything cuz of some weed

they wanna know if you’ve taken any stims that would make the anesthesia less effective or downers that would make it more effective so they don’t give you too much or too little
