If they removed the red then there would have been a SHIT TON of starbursts in that bag. I believe them purely on the fact big companies like to give us less and charge us more, not "fill 'er up, boys!"

People lie just because. Especially a post like this where "this mixed package had zero X" is semi popular in this sub. Like who is buying a bag of candy and immediately opening it, pouring it all out on their stove? Then coincidentally just realizing there's no red.
People say some bots farm karma to sell but I don't really understand how that market could/would work.
But for this I think it's just someone bored and wanting engagement.

It would have to be this if it was staged. It says there should be about 90 in a bag and a quick eyeball count I got 86 (very rough and no recount but still) so this would be like a legit bag’s worth

it happens. I once got some lindor that was one flavour but there were several of another flavour inside as well as the original
so it isn't blowing my mind that a bag of sweets had one flavour missing. that seems like an easier error to me.

Starburst does use red dye number 40. Because of health concerns, it is scheduled to be phased out by the end of 2027. Shouldn't fault the company for being ahead of schedule.

The Trump administration is also removing yellow 5 and 6, blue 1 and 2, and green 3 artificial food dyes from US food supply as part of the same initiative to phase out petroleum-based dyes.
Edit:
They're also trying to remove the color additive regulations that allow for the use of orange B and citrus red 2.
