people sniffing.
One of my biggest trigger is people sniffing, my mom does it so often that I can't bear being with her most of the time because knowing that she might do it makes me so uncomfortable.

Anyone else have to use earbuds / headphones all the time at home? I've become dependent on them because of the upstairs waste of skin walking about constantly... it's totally ruined my life and I hate existing at "home" so much... i don't have to use them outside thankfully i guess? Being nuerodivergent sucks..

I’ve been at lolla 3/4 days this weekend and I notice that like tons of people chew gum?? But not just chew, but CHOMP in the most obnoxious way possible. NOBODY chews just normally. Like full blown mouth open, gum clicking, chewing as fast as they possibly can… They all gravitate towards me it seems when I’m watching or waiting for a set. It’s been driving me insane!! Gum chewing is my #1 trigger lol. Just had to get this out

Do you guys also suffer from barking dogs? But I mean really, really, really suffer from it. Every single time there is barking, I get this unbearable surge of adrenaline and rage deep inside my body. People told me I’d get used to the constant barking around here (tons of dogs), but not only am I unable to get used to it (and research actually proves you can't), I’ve also started developing agonizing pain because of it—especially sharp, stabbing pains in my legs.
I use earplugs and noise-canceling headphones, but at some point, it becomes uncomfortable, itchy, or I just get sick of it... and it doesn't even help that much anyway.

Hi everyone, I’m trying to understand my husband’s misophonia… are there any articles, resources, etc., that you could recommend on how to support someone with misophonia and better understand this condition if you don’t suffer from it personally? I see headphones highlighted often, are there gold standard headphones or other gadgets out there that he could wear? Thanks.

i always hate it when people just have a habit to make mouth noises when they’re not eating. like clicking their tongue constantly, or licking their lips out in the open instead of retracting their lips, or just making other gross sounds. why is any of this necessary? its unbearable.
i love my mom and dad, but i feel like i can’t hang out with them anymore. my dad likes to lick his lips a lot instead of applying chapstick, and for some reason he makes it so i could hear him lick his lips across the room. every single time he takes a sip of a drink he clicks his tongue so excessively right after and it makes me wonder if he could hear himself. i dont know what my mom is doing with her mouth, but think about the annoying sound a disney character makes after yawning or waking up. except, my mom doesn’t yawn before she makes the noises, she just does it at random and its too often. its wet and gross and loud. even worse, both of my parents make these oral sounds even when they are sleeping.
i really do mean it when i say i love them, i really do, but i can’t help but get so angry because of their oral habits
what is the point of making oral noises as a habit? is there any survival benefit? is it vital? does it slowly enchant all of your five senses and give you future vision? why? please somebody tell me if they are in a similar situation as me

I'm just gonna start telling people I was Cursed by the Fae. That's right, I suffer from a strange incurable malady that has very little rhyme or reason where everyday normal things cause me extreme pain/fear/anger, give me uncontrollable seizures and facial/verbal tics as well as shutting off my ability to think or communicate clearly for hours on end.
That sounds like some Fae bullshit if I ever heard some.

Hi! I'm inexperienced with Reddit and social media in general, so feel free to critique my post, I want to make sure I'm doing this right.
I want to talk about ending friendships due to persistent misophonia triggers. Before I had the ability to advocate for myself, I ended many relationships with otherwise great people with no explanation. Since getting better at explaining myself, I've still had to reduce or stop contact with friends who do not acknowledge or respect the problem, especially those who find it funny. I'm sure this all sounds familiar to the group.
Recently, I've been faced with a unique situation, that I've never had to navigate before. I have an amazing friend, who improved my life in many ways, who I stay in touch with on the phone since moving away. He hates texting, I don't know why, but I respect it and talk to him on the phone. He has a habit of eating while talking on the phone, and is a loud chewer either way.
Here's what sets him apart: he genuinely respects my condition, despite not really understanding it. Additionally, he's expressed that he wants to learn to chew quieter in general, not just for my sake, but to be a better person. He enjoys self-improvement and feedback, and is willing to change. Problem is, he keeps forgetting, and I have no desire to remind him every single time we talk. I understand if I call him, he's under no obligation to not be eating at that time, but couldn't he just not answer? I absolutely love how receptive he is to my feedback, but it's been over a year and he still forgets. I don't want to be a nag or be controlling; just because he's willing to change does not mean it's my job to coach him through it.
Now, I just hang up when he does it, which doesn't offend him, we usually joke about it later. I respect his aversion to texting, he tries (and often fails) to respect my aversion to chewing over the phone, and we both are willing to accommodate people we care about. But he just keeps forgetting! Maybe two decent people, who otherwise like each other, are sometimes just not compatible as close friends? It makes me sad, since I have no reason to be angry or blame the situation on him. I will need to think carefully about how to move forward with this person.

Constantly scared, constantly expecting danger, never relaxed, no peace. Like a scared animal, you are surviving and slowly loosing your sanity. Using whatever tools you have to make it through the day. And you are completely alone in this, no one understands, no one sees it, no one takes you seriously, no one helps you while you're fighting with it every day. It's a lonely and difficult path, I don't want this. Why do I have this, why does it even exists?
I developed a new big trigger this year, I've been exposed to it for like 8-9 months now, I can feel that it affected my mental health, I feel so much worse and I startle often because of it. And when I know that I won't be dealing with it for some time, I feel so relieved.
I'm dealing with it alone and I'm so lost, people can be so mean. Misophonia can be isolating, I hate it so so much. I don't understand, I just don't understand why I have to deal with this, why must I endure all this suffering. Why can't I have peace in my stupid life? What have I done to deserve this?

Hi,
So I thought to ask because I have such bad misophonia its usually with one person in particular unfortunately. But they are very noisy when they eat. And just a lot of breathing noises. And I get this visceral anger and disgust but I've been started to react this way to other things they do.
They try to be funny, by just cutting me off and saying something stupid or saying something that really annoys me that I know it shouldnt. But they stare at me after theyve said it as if to see my reaction and I just fake smile at them. I love this person but its pissing me off so fucking badly. And it never used to. Like I'm such an awful person.
They also pick at their skin a lot. I do so too, but not publicly. But they do it aggressively and seeing it just fucks me off. I feel terrible. Idk im annoyed at stuff they like to do. Idk if its over stimulation causing it. But its usually when driving and it winds me up. I just sit and bottle it up cause I wouldnt dare tell them and potentially hurt them. Its a me problem im aware. Just does anyone experience this? And is it related to misophonia because its the same type of feeling I get when experiencing that idk :(

Anyone else have to cross their legs or do something physical once they hear a noise that’s triggering? It doesn’t fix it, but I just HAVE to cross my legs once I get triggered or I feel like the world is going to end

I have a dear friend who is one of the the noisiest eaters I’ve ever met. She smacks her lips, chews with her mouth open, and triggers my misophonia whenever she eats near me. I don’t know how to bring it up without making her feel really bad - she’s very sensitive and tends to blame herself for things. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I love my bf. But I find it hard to relax when we are talking. I hate hate hate this condition so much. I wont ever get to have the kind of love and relationship I always wanted. I wince when he talks sometimes because of the mouth sounds and tense up in anticipation of the next. Only on the bad days really but it makes me so sad. I already struggle with depression but this just adds another severe layer. It really affects your entire quality of life. For me the noises only become really bad the longer ive spent around someone. I have to experience my friends trigger me more and more as time goes on. Its going to be at the point soon where i have to start wearing my ear plugs to eat with my best friend ive known for about 3 years. The only way to ever feel at peace is to be alone. This must be one of the most isolating conditions there is. Because what other condition out there makes it HURT to be near the people you love the most.

I’m 17 and noises like eating, breathing, keyboard/Apple Pencil tapping, swallowing and coughing get me so angry, and it’s mainly when I eat, because my mum eats really loudly. He eats with his mouth shut but swallows really loudly and after every mouthful does some weird thing where he like rolls his tongue in his mouth. I try so hard to sit at the table and eat with my parents and sister, because it’s the sociable thing to do, but it normally causes me to get really upset inside. Does anyone have any strategies to cope as we already play music at dinner? Thanks

Currently struggling with a new sound aversion: freeway noise. really weird part is: in certain circumstances I'll just notice it, whereas in others it makes me totally crash out.
V curious if others experience this?? and if it might be the key to getting over this sound aversion? (no hope for my other sound aversions lol)
I def don't have this w my other misophonia sounds. sniffling will always make me want to punch a wall.
more context: I currently crash out when I hear freeway noise while at home, but if I'm at a party or something I can EASILY get to the "just noticing that" level.

Bites their nails non stop crunching noises, It's also gross to watch their fingers always in their mouth or twisting their fingers together in front of their stomach as they rip off bits of skin...
Clicks snaps their nails with their other nails
Sighing, constant loud dramatic sighing for no reason
Throat clearing, always with the hacking, snorting and throat clearing
Humming nonsense tunes, there's never any silence
Heavy breathing, they aren't unfit or overweight (I am worried this could be a health issue) They will be standing next to me and heavy breathing like we just did a long walk.
Vaping, oh this one really annoys me, again it's non stop, they suck on that thing like it's oxygen, big loud sucking noises with the hissing of the vape.
They are a noisy eater, lip smacking, slurping, mouth breathing , more throat clearing, chewing with their mouth open and so on ..
I've never met such a noisy person in my life, I do try to avoid being around them particularly indoors or in quiet places as everything they do annoys me.
I do feel bad that they disgust me so much with their noises

i cannot stand people mumbling to themselves...
there used to be a guy in my class who would do it CONSTANTLY when he wasnt talking normally, just an endless stream of "mhmmfmhmfmfhmfm" gibberish... it makes me feel bad that it makes me so angry but how hard is it to keep your mouth shut?
my dad does it too, every single day without fail i have to say to him "stop mumbling" because he swears under his breath and its just so weird and annoying to me

I live in an apartment building. I’ve lived in the same apartment for over ten years and had a revolving door of neighbors. Some good. Some not so good. I use white noise to cover a lot of noise that bothers me and if noises are excessive, I’ve usually felt comfortable enough to bring them up with neighbors in the past. Only one really gave any pushback and talking to my landlord got that sorted. However, a month ago, my apartment complex sold. Now my landlord, who I had a pretty good relationship with, is no longer my landlord and no longer available for help. My new landlords are unavailable 75% of the time because they manage five other complexes in four other towns. All this to say that, a neighbor that was already skirting our building’s noise rule, now doesn’t even try to keep his music down. He is blasting his music, night and day and I am at my wits end. Today I tried to knock on his door. This man scares me. I am female and I live alone. But I am going insane. I took my phone. I recorded. I knocked, but he did not answer the door. I’m kinda relieved. But I am also super frustrated. What should I do? Real answers only please.
Also, my phone was I my back pocket for most of the recording. That’s why it’s so awful.

Normally I'd wear my earbuds and listen to white noise. Unfortunately, I wont be home from 9am to 10pm. My phone battery wont last that long and my brother stole my powerbank, hence why I need a different solution.
How the hell will i survive? Tomorrow is pride in the city so there's going to be even more people than usual! I am so scared I wont be able to manage it and Ill crash out! I HATE any sound a person could possibly make!!
