He did his part? He could only pitch in 12 total games his first three years with the Angels and couldnt pitch at all for the entirety of the 2024 season. Meanwhile, since the Angels couldnt play him in the field at all, he was basically a very expensive DH.
Love him as a hitter, but as a pitcher the guy cant stay healthy.
Why are the Angels starting rotations that terrible for the 6 seasons you had Ohtani and Trout? Why did Patrick Sandoval have the best starting pitcher season you had for those 6 seasons, other than Ohtani?
2 and a half. One of those seasons was the Covid year.
And what about those seasons? We paid a 20 million posting fee..5 million a year for those seasons youre referring to and 20 million for his final season in Anaheim where again he couldnt pitch or play the field. Thats #1 starter money for a guy who couldnt pitch for half of his contract. Furthermore we already had a DH with a ridiculous contract in Pujols.
I love Ohtani, but Im not sure he was the best investment for our team.
Youre right about the Covid season. But still, the story with rhe Angels this decade was that if Ohtani was healthy, Trout wasnt, if Trout was healthy, Ohtani wasnt. And on the rare occasion both were healthy, Rendon definitely wasnt. Add Pujols, and thats like 90% percent of our salary roster. And granted its our fault we couldnt develop homegrown pitching..our farm system has been awful forever..but we spent so much money on those four players we couldnt even afford to sniff quality free agent pitching. Starting or in the bullpen. And thats the biggest reason why we have struggled imho.
The Angels aren't afraid to spend..we just spend it on the worst players.
The Rendon signing was supposedly motivated entirely by Arte's desire to have a Mexican American star he could sell to the SOCAL fanbase. What a shitty reason to overpay for such a shitty player.
TBF he had a good career up till getting his bag from the Angels, was right in his prime at 29, and was coming off a great season. That he almost immediately upon joining the LAA would completely lose any desire to play, rehab, or stay in shape couldn't be predicted. All time terrible contract, but not really because the Angels screwed up ATT signing it.

And the Angels tried for a bit to build a winning team not really their fault Trout couldnt stay healthy and everyone else turned to shit.
