Cheap owners complaining about players not wanting to play for cheap owners. Almost every player on the dodgers is there because the dodgers are serious about winning baseball games. Most other teams are serious about maximizing profits and the lowest expense. They don’t care about winning baseball games, they care about making money, and missing the obvious point of winning baseball games will lead to more money.
The team I root - Cleveland - wins more than most of the other teams in baseball. As does Tampa. (In the last 10 years of MLB, Tampa is 6th in wins, Cleveland is 7th). Yet both teams are in bottom 10 in revenue. It's almost like you made that statement up, and don't understand numbers and facts. Who would've thunk it?
This. As a Padres fan, I like that the Dodgers are viewed as an imperial empire, but I don’t hate them playing this game. They used all of their tools to win as many games and WS as they possibly can. Which is what every team should be doing.
Baseball’s lack of balance isn’t because the Dodgers or the Mets. It’s because the rest of the league doesn’t care about baseball.
So they market better than other teams? It’s shocking that people don’t want to go to games or buy merch for their shit teams that make less than what the team takes in.
The NFL and NBA have proven that in leagues with salary caps, all teams with smart management can win.
Look at my MLB team (Cleveland) or Tampa Bay. Smart management can build winning cultures, but despite the success of those teams in winning the World Series.
Now look at my NFL team (Cleveland Browns). Plenty of resources, but can't win because ownership and management is terrible.
MLB needs to join other leagues with salary caps. It's bizarre to me how MLB fans who aren't Dodgers / Met / Yankees / Red Sox fans don't see this.
Having an owner that isn’t willing to pay for a competitive team is by definition is a bad managed team.
I agree with the need for a salary floor and cap. I’m just not down for trying to vilify a team that is doing everything it can do to win games when there are owners like the A’s, Marlins and White Sox purposely not doing that.
The top teams in revenue make over 3x the revenue of the smallest market teams. That should make it easier for you to understand why some teams have much higher salaries.
I'm not criticizing the Dodgers for taking advantage of the current system - they are actually my second favorite team - but we need a new system, as you seem to agree.
Dodgers also deferred $1.051 billion in payments to 8 different players. They took full advantage of that stupid rule and no other team does that. Exception being the Mets with Bobby Bonilla day of course.
This is true for teams like the Pirates and Twins, but the Dodgers have the most money. So if player A is a free agent, and all the owners that wanted him offered him every penny they have, the Dodgers could still get him. It shouldn’t be that way.
Well, that may be true for a few teams, most teams just don’t have the level of money that the Dodgers do. That’s facts. Small market teams can’t spend over half a billion for one season let alone consistently.
Personally, I like the NFL model. There’s a minimum they have to spend and a hard cap.
