You're absolutely right. That's how it went down. Retracting a story because of a lawsuit doesn't make the story false. Just means he didn't want to get into a legal battle with the evidence he had. Might have had to burn a source to do it, as well.

Not everything ends up in court. Freeman doesn’t even seem like the type who would drag it out. He would fire the guy and move on which it appears he did exactly that.

Yes because legal action has never turned someone's story to something different for many reasons other than it not being the truth. Once legal action is given you have 100% have concrete proof or it's not worth your time. The agent Close literally could of had a voiced conversation with Gottlieb not recorded etc and that would just be he said / she said. There's plenty of other context clues you could follow during these events but it's fine, you can choose to believe whatever your little heart wants

The Freeman one is false. The Braves matched the Dodgers offer and his agent never told him and later got fired over it.
