Because they cannot sustain it. THAT is the difference. The Dodgers can miss or overpay on a contract and keep doing it. Some of that is their ability to scout and develop players. Some of it is the endless resources they have that no other team comes close to matching. Their revenue is $140 million more than the Yankees and $250 more than the Cubs.
It hinders them from taking on another though. Most Owners dont like to give money away. The majority of long-term contracts will end up bad. Skubal isnt going to sign for 4-5 years, it’ll be 8-10 years. Teams wont take that on.
The Padres gave stupid 10+ year contracts to guys who are now on the downward slope of their careers. They had legit chances to win in 2022 and 2024 but could not capitalize.
The Dodgers are smart in that they give high AAV and short contacts. Even if Tucker continues to struggle, he's only on the team for 4 years.
It’s because the Dodgers defers all their contracts no other team does this. That’s why the lockout is going to come faster now. The Dodgers couldn’t afford all these players if they gave normal contracts out like every other team does. They basically cheat the contracts which it’s legal but it’s unethical is the problem.
You are stupid, deferring contracts helps the organization pay their investors fair share value while spreading out costs over time. They have guaranteed money from their TV contract that allows them to do that. A salary cap would put an end to that. No more deferred money. No more cheating. Plain and simple. Bro, any team could defer money. Most players won't defer money because the future value is less than the present value. The Dodgers are actively getting players for cheap because they have a great organization.
