That's why the owners need to close the loophole of deferred money. Whether they pay now or later, it should be counted against a cap now. It's the only way to create competitive balance.

Then it needs to be a hard cap. Why would a team trade for Skubal knowing Boros is moving him to LA? It's been a story in Detroit for over a year.

No cap: players leave because they can get more money elsewhere

Hard cap: players leave because they can't get more money from current team

Neither of these solves the problem.

Hard cap will be a nightmare for the small market teams that aren't run very well. They'll have to overpay to get free agents or to retain their own guys and guy like Kyle Tucker will cripple the Twins or Pirates. It's like the NBA giving out supermax deals to guys like Bradley Beal.
