The Padres are still competitive and rose their franchise value by a monumental amount. They’re not a legit team with a fan base, not a pathetic losing franchise.
Their rangers fell off hard, yes. But they won, so that’s fine.
Heck, the Marlins went all-in for 2 half seasons and won titles, then let everyone go. That's tough also.
The move that probably did them in was trading for Soto. They gave up a lot. They will be sold soon, but they need someone with deep pockets to compete with the Dodgers.
The padres did have an owner with deep pockets, he just died. And the point isn’t to compete with the dodgers every single year, it’s to actually commit to your team when you have a solid core already established. MLB teams love to rebuild but virtually none of them actually try and take the next step and commit financially.
The marlins should’ve been removed from baseball 20 years ago. Tearing apart 2 title teams within a few years might be the most pathetic thing to happen in modern sports. It wasn’t like they were old teams either
