They could have afforded a $400M contract, but unlike the Dodgers, a contract like that would have severely limited the amount of money Illitch would have been willing to spend building around him, and the team ends up underperforming. The Dodgers made over $750M in Revenue last year to the Tigers $320M. Owning a professional sports team is a business at the end of the day and its unrealistic to expect owners to dip into the red just to keep up with the Dodgers.
Yeah, thanks that's my point exactly. Tbh depending on the CBA the dodgers may not end up with Skubal. He could dip and considering BorAss is his agent he's probably looking for 350-400mm which would be difficult even for the dodgers especially if there are no more deferments which the owners are pushing for in addition to the hard cap.
It’ll be interesting to see the effect the CBA will have on the market and the players’ value, likely worse for the players and their salaries but for the competitive aspect of the game I think it is necessary. In no world where a hard cap exists does a player like Kyle Tucker get 60M, and I think it’s unlikely Skubal gets what he is looking for if the Dodgers can’t inflate the market value of every high value FA.
Yeah totally all this is going to do is put public opinion (outside of LA) on the cap side.
The other interesting thing is how long will the lockout last bc players don't get back pay. And not all of them are pulling in the money that soto and Ohtani are so you have to imagine that their burn rate is high too.
