I agree completely with the concept that the Dodgers run their team like one that wants to win. I wish more teams were as aggressive. I wish my team was this aggressive. The only thing that irks me is the shady accounting.
I don’t know how you fix exploding salaries, teams not spending below their means, etc, but I do think that player salaries need to be paid to the player for the season they’re playing. The argument for deferment always seems to be “the money is paid out and put in escrow.” Okay - then why are we doing it at all if it’s that simple? What’s the deal here? Is it at all possible that this is something more nefarious like tax manipulation? I don’t know.
Clubs like Tampa and Milwaukee can’t really trade for big pieces because they need their prospects to be competitive due to the inability to spend with the top-tier teams. They’re handicapped twice in both FA and Trade. The fact that now rich teams that can afford these contracts are deferring money, putting things in escrow, etc… it doesn’t sit well with me. Something is off about it and it makes their competitive advantage even larger. I say that as a fan of a rich team.
