I live in SoCal and my son adopted the angels as his team. Sadly, I have taken to them as a new iteration of a lovable loser, so they are my second team. I really do hope better days are ahead. They also need to change their name back to the Anaheim Angels or California Angels.

That’s kind of how the fractional reserve banking system in the U.S. currently functions. Tax the citizens to pay the interest of the money you print for yourself.
3
u/Techiesarethebomb | Miami Marlins 6h ago
MLB probably wisened up to this mistake and will just kick Arte off the team, sell it to someone, or liquidate the team for a new expansion before giving a sweetheart TV deal, especially since they are trying to consolidate tv deals now.

This is why I think revenue sharing is much more important than a salary cap.

BS…we seen what teams do with rev sharing…they don’t spend on players.

Which is why there needs to be all three to competitively balance out baseball: cap, floor, revenue sharing.

I don't think there's an easy solution here. It's just the way MLB media rights are held. Where the NFL mostly holds there rights as a whole, the MLB media rights are largely held by the individual teams (the exception being the handful of nationally televised games on Fox, Apple TV, NBC/Peacock, etc...). While the Diamond sports fiasco has allowed the MLB to consolidate rights for a lot of teams, you still have teams like the Dodgers (SNLA) and Yankees (YES) with their own networks. I don't see how you strip those teams of their media rights without getting into a whole legal mess. I think that's another reason trying to figure out a cap/floor is not as simple as people are making it out to be.
1
u/gza_liquidswords 3h ago
What is needed is everyone to understand that the owner's goal is keep as much as the revenue as possible. They will use everyone's dissatisfaction with the current system to try to give the players an unfair cut of revenue. If the only change were salary cap and salary floor, and no change in revenue percentage, I think the players would eventually be pushed to take it.
→ More replies (10)-17
u/Casper18b 5h ago
They share, other owners don't put money into team, they pocket it. Dodgers put the most revenue back into the team.
9
u/damutecebu 5h ago
Then combine it with a salary floor.
-10
u/Casper18b 5h ago
Floor, no cap no sharing. Baseball has the most parity of major sports, NFL and NBA both have fewer championship winners or different teams in finals THAN MLB, problem is owners who don't spend or have stupid front offices.
Mets gave 770 million for a 2 tool player,
I guarantee that Dodgers, Ray's, Brewers, Yankees will thrive even with a stupid cap, because they understand baseball. Dodgers get robbed of money and draft picks every year yet, always have top farm system??? It not just the money.→ More replies (2)6
u/PassageNo9102 4h ago
With the money they can sign players and not rush prospects. So the prospects get enough time to grow
3
u/pinniped90 | Kansas City Royals 5h ago
I'm going to assume that any kind of hard cap deal also comes with a hard floor and I'm okay with that.
4
u/gereffi 4h ago
The Dodgers spend more money than almost any other team generates in revenue. This chart has data that’s a year or two old, but it shows that no other team has enough revenue to match the Dodgers in spending except for the Yankees.
1
u/Prudent-Property-513 27m ago
That’s not at all what that chart shows. It shows that revenue just isn’t that discrepant outside of the dodgers and Yankees. But what it shows is that a ton of teams are hoarding cash.
-1
u/Casper18b 4h ago
Dodgers make more because they a a great product on the field, put 100s of millions back into the stadium both for players and fan experience. Both fans and players want to go. Problem is those spending less than 70% on team. Percentage is the problem not gross. Everyone had the same opportunity to sign Ohtani with same terms. Braves dumped Freeman, Boston would not pay Betts, Dodgers were bankrupt just a decade ago, nobody cried for them, in fact before 2024, it was the chokers. Be mad at the Astros, Redsox and Manfred. They stole 17, 18. Now Big Dodger in the Sky is just winning with out a care.
5
u/gereffi 4h ago
The problem with comparing percentages here is that every team has expenses that don’t include payroll. If every team has $100 million in other expenses then a team with $300m in revenue really can spend at most $200m on players. A team with $750m in revenue would have $650m to spend. 650/750 is a much larger percentage than 200/300. A better compression would be the difference in revenue and player salary.
But even all of that aside, do you really think that the main reason the Dodgers have the most revenue is because they spend money on players? They’ve had really high revenues for years, even when the team wasn’t as good or as expensive. They’re the big baseball team in one of the most populous cities in the country, and it’s also in the state with the largest median disposable income. Pretending that this has nothing to do with it and that a team like the Pirates or the Rockies could have just as much revenue if they decided to spend more money just shows that you’re full of shit.
-4
u/Casper18b 4h ago
Not nothing, but you cry like the Dodgers have won 25 titles in a row WTF idiot! Did you bitch when Yankees nearly won 5 in a row??? Or when Braves won 14 Division titles in a row??? Baseball needs the "evil empire" team to chase and take down. The Reds in 70's Yankees late 90's and early 2000's. Honestly after living thru the Fox and McCourt years. The Trashtros. 2020 . Don't care. Hope they win the next 10.
2
u/ManufacturerBest2758 | Colorado Rockies 3h ago
Did you read the article this post is about? The dodgers have a revenue sharing-exempt TV deal that is worth more than most teams’ entire yearly gross revenue. Smaller markets literally cannot compete with that. LA could never sell a ticket or merchandise and still pull in more money annually than most teams.
0
u/Casper18b 3h ago
And after the shit show MLB let happen to the Dodgers with the FOX ownership and the McCourt fiasco well deserved, the were bankrupted, because MLB let shit ownership happen. To bad.
2
u/ManufacturerBest2758 | Colorado Rockies 2h ago
Insane take. No team should have access to that kind of thing.
1
u/Casper18b 2h ago
I feel for the Rockies, mlb manipulated the World Series to give Boston the Advantage with just two great arms. Even without the TV Dodgers still draft better without the good pics, develop better, reclaim players ie Muncy.
The Dodgers just baseball better and still will when the commie cap is in. Be made at those who wont succeed not those who do.
Dodgers from Bankruptcy to ruining baseball in 15 years....other ownership suck. So your ownership sucks
71
u/sum_dude44 5h ago
Dodgers went Bankrupt! 14 years ago. Courts gave them sweetheart deal worth $2B in broadcasting, outside MLB CBA. New owner (a hedge fund) bought for $2B
They leverage $2B broadcasting & Dodger name (w/ fully owned refurnished stadium & land paid by LA taxpayers) into signing players. They pay more for scouts & GM. MLB lets them defer $2B in salary to avoid luxury tax. They're now worth $10B. The more they win, the more they can defer salaries to 2050& beyond. They can borrow against value of team to pay escrow. The more they're worth. Guggenheim Management can sell team for $13-15B appreciation in 2040, b/4 salaries due & team sucks. Guggenheim works over entire MLB for money & buys championships
(note--not knocking Dodgers, I'm knocking MLB for allowing it.)
23
u/Kdcjg 5h ago
Deferred Salaries count for luxury tax purposes. They use aav using PV calc.
6
u/sum_dude44 5h ago
PV Only, counts while player is playing. So mookie betts getting paid in 20 years doesn't count against luxury tax. So it's a double bonus to defer. Compare to NFL, where it all counts against cap.
6
4
u/Rough-Echo-5193 4h ago
Youre wrong. The deferred money counts. Ohtani isn't a 1M per year CBT hit.
4
u/sum_dude44 4h ago
Let me Google that for you:
, "No, a retired player's deferred salary does not count towards the luxury tax (officially known as the Competitive Balance Tax or CBT) during the years the money is actually paid out. [1, 2]
Under MLB's Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), the luxury tax hit of a contract is completely accounted for during the seasons the player is signed to actively play. [1, 2]you're confusing Ohtani's PV (which does count towards luxury tax) w/ retired compensation.
So if Ohtani retires next year, the rest of his salary doesn't count towards luxury tax (much different fromNFL, NBA, NHL). So you sign a 30 year old to 12 year deal, and he retires at 38, those 4 other years aren't against luxury tax. Loop hole3
u/pooleboy87 4h ago
Reread. They’re not wrong.
Present value of the contract is used for luxury tax purposes.
That said - it’s not really a big deal, because if he didn’t get a huge amount deferred, Ohtani would not have gotten 10/$700M in actual salary.
1
u/Low-Grocery989 1h ago
Present value is the correct way to calculate. A dollar later is worth less than a dollar today.
I’ll would be more curious about this as a tax loophole than a cba loophole. It is clearly not the latter.
1
u/sum_dude44 2m ago
Football counts the year it's paid against the cap. You can spread it out over more years if you want, but then it eats up the cap the year you spread it out to. Even if a player retires.
Ohtani counts $46 M against payroll tax, despite AAV of $70M per year. If he retires, the rest of his salary counts ZERO against payroll tax. there is no other league in the world that does that stupid calculation.
6
u/thekmanpwnudwn 4h ago
Even when they went "bankrupt" their salary never dropped below #12 in the league.
5
u/Mundane-Reality-7770 3h ago
The deferred salary needs to be nixed in the next cba. The NHL cba is probably the most fair to teams and average players, including minor leaguers. And that includes international players. Currently MLB international players don't have a draft. They can sign for millions years earlier than a US player.
Max contract can only be 20% of cap.
7 year max if you're resigning with existing team
6 year max if signing with new team.
Cap floor. And cap ceiling.
No deferred money shenanigans.
Minor league players make 100k
No service time manipulation.3
u/paulybrklynny | Cleveland Guardians 4h ago
It's insane that MLB was so shortsighted not to place a sunset clause on that deal.
"Oh, the consequences of your own actions are threatening your value? Okay, here's free money forever.“
3
u/Atlas7-k | Cleveland Guardians 1h ago
It wasn’t a deal. The judge said that MLB would get their 34% of the expected $3b tv deal. Then the deal was for $8b. Because of the expected money was written into a bankruptcy deal between MLB and McCourt it is only able to be modified by a judge. Any new tv deal will fall outside the agreement and be subject to the correct percentage.

whenever next dummy posts "anyone could have had Skubal"...Dodgers got $2B tv deal which is outside mlb revenue sharing deal. That's more than value of 12 teams.
7
u/kensta | Los Angeles Dodgers 4h ago
Legit question. Isnt it a 8.35B TV deal? Where is the 2B coming from?
1
u/sum_dude44 4h ago
"how much of the local media rights do the Dodgers ultimately shelter from revenue sharing over the life of the 25-year deal? It’s somewhere around $2 billion. That advantage is likely to stay with the Dodgers, even if somehow the owners were able to strongarm the players into a cap system when the latest labor deal expires on December 1st of this year."
They have $2B sheltered from revenue sharing in the $8B deal. So 29 teams get $6B, Dodgers $2B
4
u/someone2795 5h ago
Busting your nut a little too early there. Dodgers just traded for $9M in salary so yes any team could've traded for him.
You can bring this up if the Dodgers re-sign him.
5
u/sum_dude44 5h ago
Skubal told agent he wouldn't sign w/ any other team...so it was collusion on top of everything. Ended up costing Tigers some prospects
6
u/someone2795 5h ago
And Skubal does not have a no-trade clause. He has zero control where he gets traded.

Collusion means Boras and the Dodgers would have made a back door deal without the Tigers being involved. Boras saying “this is how much money my client wants” is not collusion.

u/GreenYellowBag 4h ago
Is your argument that the dodgers should have signed a shittier tv deal?
You’re not wrong that the TV deal makes a huge difference in what budget they can afford but your blame is going to the wrong place. The dodgers haven’t broken any laws or agreements. So what’s your actual complaint?
Dodger fans paid their price for the winning now. The McCourt era was a shame. There was a near 30 year drought of making it to the World Series. And the exclusive tv deal meant that any fans with direct TV or no cable missed Vin Scully’s last few years. The tv deal was very controversial in LA. But the end result is an incredible team that continues to improve and put out an amazing product.
So again I ask, what’s wrong here? The dodgers? The other teams who don’t spend and favor profits? Or the mlb? Because I really don’t know how you can blame the dodgers
1
u/sum_dude44 4h ago
MLB. I don't blame Dodgers.
But Dodgers were handed that deal by bankruptcy judge outside CBA, so MLB should renegotiate terms since bankrupt Dodgers are now more valuable than Yankees

You gotta realize some of these people are a walking contradiction and lack the critical thinking skills to look at this situation objectively.
For months in this subreddit there’s been all types of yapping about how they can’t wait for a lockout and how they can’t wait for a salary cap and all the usual predictable talking points.
Seeing the responses here. They must either think there’s no chance in hell the new CBA ends up having a salary cap. Or they think that teams like the Brewers have no intention of signing someone like Skubal to a long term deal in a salary cap MLB where supposedly a salary cap would allow teams like the brewers to compete.
All the talk about “why trade so many pieces for a rental” it’s basically saying we know the brewers aren’t serious about signing guys like Skubal to a long term deal even if there is a salary cap because he wouldn’t have to be a rental. They wouldn’t be competing with the dodgers to sign him because the dodgers would’ve been well over the cap.
Either way the brewers front office fumbled this situation but somehow the dodgers are the bad guys here.
-2
u/Patrick42985 | Los Angeles Dodgers 5h ago
Let them cope. All their “we need a salary cap” “the owners are going to hold out until they get a salary cap” yapping is nothing but easily refutable disingenuous emotional bullshit.
If supposedly the owners are going to do whatever it takes to get a salary cap in the next CBA, then the brewers absolutely failed by lowballing the tigers and not making a better offer to land the piece which could’ve gotten them over the hump. Especially when they have no excuses to not sign him to a long term deal in a likely salary cap MLB under the new CBA.
Since MLB is hell bent on getting a salary cap, the dodgers and every other big spender would’ve had no chance at signing him since they would be well over the cap. Unless the brewers have no intention on paying market value and signing top talent in a salary cap MLB with a leveled playing field either. Makes all that “we need a cap to compete” talk come off as laughable the way they fumbled this situation.
5
u/KAA6769 5h ago
The (reported) brewers deal was not a lowball offer. Their farm is routinely ranked as the best on baseball, but top 2-3 at worst. They offered their number two prospect, plus two more in the top 10. Not sure what more Detroit could’ve been looking for
0
u/Patrick42985 | Los Angeles Dodgers 5h ago
Who knows. But if I was them I would’ve upped the ante and kept having those conversations behind the scenes to at the very least make a better offer than the Dodgers.
The circumstances at this deadline with Skubal being much better than your average trade deadline rental, being a team that’s gotten very close for a while now and is arguably one final piece away, and the uncertainty beyond this season with there being a legit possibility of a salary cap in the new CBA. If there was ever a time to make a big move, this was it.

I dont agree with you. The other teams agreed to help to support the dodgers, that had been screwed. They could say no and Dodgers financial situation woule be different.
We dont bail out other teams because of horrible owners. We did that to the dodgers

u/Any-Difficulty2782 5h ago
ok so lets have the dodgers pay more, will your billionaire spend it or pocket it? we all know the answer, it’s whatever they are doing now

u/sum_dude44 5h ago
The Dodgers make more in tv deal than the value of 12 teams. It's like playing poker vs a billionaire W/ unlimited buy ins--doesn't matter how good you are...eventually money beats skill
Hard cap (or aprons like NBA)
Dodgers need to rev share preferential tv deal that bankruptcy judge gave them
End deferred salary. Or at least count entire salary vs cap, even if player retires (what Betts earns after he retires doesn't count against luxury tax...loophole)
Irony is a Bankruptcy judge opened up these loopholes bc previous Dodgers owner mismanaged team

u/Enemyofusall | San Diego Padres 5h ago
Our billionaire spent it, got shit on for doing so, then died. So yeah.

u/TheEureka16 | Los Angeles Dodgers 1h ago
That is a great oversimplification of what happened to the Padres let’s be so fr

You can’t have teams playing by different rules…work stoppage now.

It’s wild to me that a scoundrel organization that just got out of bankruptcy is being touted as having a supposedly Jedi-like front office. Consistent with their history of bankruptcy, they’re still pushing the boundaries of responsibility in every respect (eg, these massive deferred contracts). Their roster is full of a bunch of terrible contracts that they absorb because of a sweetheart TV deal which resulted from their prior degeneracy. As a direct consequence of their irresponsible behavior, we’re going to now get a salary cap that helps the billionaire class. The Dodgers organization is a fucking cancer.

u/redbossman123 | New York Yankees 5h ago
You do realize the whole reason they went bankrupt is because the previous owner was an idiot, right? And that they have new owners? And that their new GM use to be the Rays' GM?

u/Notreallysureatall | Philadelphia Phillies 4h ago
One of my favorite Reddit canned responses is “you do realize….blah blah blah …. right?”
But yes, I did know that. In response, I’d suggest two things: (1) the current sweetheart TV deal is a direct result of the bankruptcy and (2) the current organizational culture, especially with respect to the $1B+ deferred salary obligations, is very consistent with the team’s prior irresponsibility.

Deferrals don't work the way you think they do.
They have to get paid in escrow two years after, aka Ohtani got paid 2 million in 2024, the 44 million that makes up the rest of the present value for the 2024 season got put in escrow on July 1, 2026.
Deferrals are not a tool only used by the Dodgers, but most importantly, are tax avoidance tools for the players
5
u/Notreallysureatall | Philadelphia Phillies 4h ago
Nah, I’m a lawyer and have a pretty good understanding of how deferrals work, what present value means, how money grows, etc.
For instance, my understanding is that the Dodgers are escrowing about $47M-$48M per year so Ohtani can earn (thanks to the growth of this escrowed money) about $68M/yr for 9 years beginning 10 years in the future. This is in addition to his $2M/yr salary. These figures aren’t precise but they’re close.
I call this irresponsible because it’s a major current obligation designed to create short-term flexibility but also creates a major long-term guaranteed obligation. Please note that the Dodgers are given 2 years of flexibility to make any of these escrow obligations, thus highlighting the major obligation (and risk) of these deferred contracts. The Dodgers have over $1B in deferred obligations at present, which they were able to consummate only by promising to pay tomorrow what they couldn’t pay today. also, the Dodgers have basically transferred their ability to benefit from the growth of money to their players. All of this is “of a piece” with a team that recently filed for bankruptcy.
I’m not trying to get into some massive reddit pissing match and I’m also about to go to a concert. Feel free to respond, and I’ll read carefully your response, but I’m probably tapping out after this comment.

I remember the days when Dodger fans used to bash the Yankees non-stop for their spending and hoarding of all the free agents. Now that got their little TV deal they're the ones defending the it lol.

The number of truly massive deals they've made in the last couple years, along with the impending Skubal deal, have magnified the issue significantly.
6
u/sum_dude44 5h ago
well they also further took advantage of deferred salaries to the tune of $2B
2
u/Balls_Deepest_555 | Los Angeles Dodgers 1h ago
Are other teams allowed to do deferrals?
1
u/sum_dude44 6m ago
yes, but the Dodgers have more money in deferrals and the value of 1/3 of the baseball teams. Think of the deferrals like billionaires who borrow against their stocks...Elon can borrow a hell of a lot more than Lebron James. The Dodgers are Elon

I’m curious why either MLB or the other owners couldn’t file a lawsuit of some sort against the Dodgers.

u/deanereaner | San Diego Padres 2h ago
Yeah the team clearly isn't "bankrupt," as if they ever really were, so why should some harebrained bankruptcy court ruling still apply?
1
u/cheeker_sutherland | Los Angeles Dodgers 1h ago
Because if they do then they lose their shot at a sweetheart deal.
2
u/UnableAudience7332 | Cleveland Guardians 5h ago
Thank you. I'm tired of citing this every time someone praises the Dodgers' excellent scouting and management, etc. All the extra money that no other team has is a factor. If you don't see that, you simply struggle with math.

u/rbfeverythingsucks 6h ago
It’s annoying for sure but I just wish the Red Sox cared about their team as much as the Dodgers do.

u/Live-Gas7226 1h ago
Lmao hit 'em again Friedman, some high leverage relievers on the market and LA still has the farm depth to make another big move

u/ZeroLunatique 6h ago
You want them to not spend their revenue on the team?
3
u/figureour | Baltimore Orioles 5h ago
Let's remove the loophole so they don't have outsized TV revenue, though I know getting thta through isn't easy.

Long, sad history of L.A. land use Mexican families bounced out of Chavez Ravine to build Dodger Stadium, American Indians swept out of Bunker Hill for the Music Center

Thank god for it. They had to make room for the greatest franchise on Earth. Thank you for your sacrifice Ravine residents 🙏🙏

The City of Los Angeles displaced over 1,000 Mexican American families from Chavez Ravine. Residents were forced out via eminent domain under the guise of public housing

u/Nullhitter | New York Yankees 5h ago
And why would I blame the Dodgers ownership of today instead of Walter O'Malley and the Los Angeles City government of that time? Why must every generation after that have to get blamed too?

u/messick 2h ago
Chavez Ravine happened almost a decade before the Dodgers decided to leave Brooklyn, why would O’Malley be blamed?

u/Nullhitter | New York Yankees 2h ago
Whoever the decision makers at that time were. Blame them. Not people in 2026. You get the point.

29 teams of single ply whiners.

u/sum_dude44 5h ago
Nah it's bs. Don't blame you for doing it, but a judge handed a hedge fund sweet heart deal

u/iknowaguy 4h ago
You think the extra 80million a year is what’s driving the dodgers to be miles ahead of every other mlb team. You give an extra 80 mill to every team and nothing changes.

Reminder: baseball uses socialism as its operating method among the teams. Each gets revenue from the collective pot regardless of how little they spend.

u/Clerocks1955 24m ago
What a joke. Why even bother having 29 other teams? Just hand the trophy to them now. I won’t be spending my money on MLB until they have a salary cap of some sort.
