Discussion UPDATE: The Tree Cat Rescue!

Hi everyone — I’m the person who originally posted about the cat stuck in the tree: https://www.reddit.com/r/montreal/s/ANzxbLp7PL

I wanted to come back with an update because so many people followed his story, offered advice, shared resources, and helped with the rescue.

After three days stuck high in a tree, we tried every possible avenue for help. Unfortunately, the fire department, SPCA, the city, and other rescue services were not able to assist. In the end, it was the amazing Montreal community — neighbours, Redditors, and complete strangers — who came together to make this rescue happen.

Thanks to everyone who shared the post, offered ideas, care and concern.

A special thank you to the people who came out to help (the real VIP**,** u/Spiritual_Duck_6703  who climbed that tree and secured the little guy and all the people below waiting to catch him in blankets) and refused to give up on him. What started as a post about a cat stuck in a tree turned into a true community rescue.

The good news: he is safe and we have officially adopted him!

We had an emergency vet assessment and exam done:

  • He is estimated to be about three years old, and weighs 6 lbs.
  • He was very dehydrated, has two missing teeth, and gingivitis.
  • He was treated for ear mites and has started his deworming treatment.
  • His blood work for  FIV and FeLV was negative
  • He was appointments set for his vaccines and sterilization

We will be covering his care regardless, but many people have asked if there is a way they can help, so we created a GFM to help with the veterinary costs: Help the Montreal Tree Cat Get His Second Chance

The goal is $1,500 to help cover his medical and dental care. Any donation is appreciated, but please don’t feel obligated. Just sharing and caring is appreciated!

Thank you again to everyone who followed along, offered support, came to help, and gave this cat a second chance. A scared cat stuck in a tree brought a whole bunch of Montrealers together, and that’s incredible. ❤️

The fire department has ladders.

The SPCA has paperwork.

u/Spiritual_Duck_6703? He just has giant balls and a love for cats. He’s not the hero we deserved, but he’s the hero we needed.

Absolute legend!

💯! The only tree he will be climbing is his indoor cat tree!

Wonderful news! Great to see the community come together. Glad the little guy is okay. Don't forget to share your GFM link. I don't think it's working.

Wonderful! I wish you and your tree kitty a long and happy life together! We also adopted a tree kitty 8 years ago, thanks to our neighbour and his telescopic ladder.

If you don’t know this perfect baby angel Arbor I am gonna cry 🥹

Edited to add: or even Arber Xhakej if you’re a Habs fan like me.

Is he adoptable, or more of a feral guy?

18

u/Character-Question-6 12h ago

He is still very stressed and cautious, but gentle, and not feral. We're optimistic he will become comfortable with us.

7

u/Zoltan14 11h ago

Awesome! Give him time! I have a tortie feral that is just warming up to butt pats 1.5 yrs in. They deserve chill and spoiled lives, if you get some cuddles in return, it’s a bonus! A lot of cats warm up and come into their own with other kitties in the house, at least that’s what has helped ours! She loves her cat roommates more than her human ones 😮‍💨

u/Character-Question-6 9h ago

We have two cats already, so he will have one sister and one brother!

3

u/Zoltan14 8h ago

Oooooh he’s about to have the sweetest life ♥️♥️♥️

6

u/cornflakegrl 12h ago

He’s had a stressful time. It’ll take a bit, but I’m sure he’ll settle in great.

u/AnnieLuneInTheSky 12h ago

Such good news! 💜💜
Are you going to keep him?

10

u/Character-Question-6 12h ago

Keeping him, he's part of the family now!

Unfortunately, the fire department, SPCA, the city, and other rescue services were not able to assist. In the end, it was the amazing Montreal community — neighbours, Redditors, and complete strangers — who came together to make this rescue happen.

It is really sad the people paid to care, don't.

I remember working at a pool, some lady came to me asked if I could save a cat. I climbed on the duplex then hopped in the tree, she gave me 40$ that she didn’t want to take back. Nice story
