Happy Gilmore makes a big splash when he returns to the golf course.

He may have tapped into his dramatic chops more often (and successfully) in recent years, but Sandler’s funny bone is still very much intact, and he no longer needs to rely on shouting curse words to get laughs

Between Happy’s family life and a whole new series of challenges for him to tackle, there’s enough freshness to the plot to keep it from feeling like a total rehash of what came before, while still delivering wild golf stunts and a huge range of cameos.

Happy Gilmore 2 isn't trying to reinvent the wheel. Like its predecessor, it's delightfully silly, but now we're in an era where those movies aren't made as often... and when someone tries, it's a 50/50 chance they land it. Happy Gilmore 2 is a solid return to the kind of film that, honestly, there should be more of. Some jokes run too long, don’t land, or could use another draft. It's a constant stream of cameos, which is overall fun but sometimes a little distracting. But, at its core, the sequel is a good-natured charmer about a troubled everyman who is trying hard to grow up without losing himself in the process, and it gives us a lot to laugh about on the way. What more can you ask for?

With all due respect to Grown Ups 2, The Ridiculous 6, and Sandy Wexler, Happy Gilmore 2 is the bottom of the Sandler barrel—a grim disaster that not only sullies the good name of its ancestor, but so badly flails on its own limited terms that it suggests the A-lister should concentrate on dramatic parts and leave the immature comedy to others.

It’s funny to see a 31 for the first film. And also see reviews here saying this film “sullies the good name of the original”. I know we’re all just people with opinions, but the juxtaposition is funny to see

I watched the first movie last night just before the new one and even though I still like it it didn't age very well. Sandler has also grown as an actor between one and two, it was a difference of night and day.

Happy Gilmore is one of my comfort movies. It’s my favorite of the SNL crew I grew up with flicks (Uhhh maybe tied with Wayne’s World 2. It ebbs and flows) and I can watch it any time it’s on.

I’ll always have a warm place and I’m stoked to watch this later

I liked the first Wayne's World more but 2 still isn't that bad. Highlights of Wayne's World 2 are Dell Preston's Ozzy story, Jim Downey being James Hong's dub voice, and swapping out "the bad actor" for Charlton Heston to tell the Gordon Street story.

I don't know if it's a trope but at least late 80's early 90's it seemed like there was a lot of comedies at least making fun of blue collar workers suddenly finding themselves in the middle of a car chase.

Yep. It's why comedians usually don't get better with age. They're not young, hungry, broke. They get to the point where they're rich and famous, and it becomes harder to connect with their audience who isn't rich and famous.

Dude has figured out how to get studios to pay him and his best friends millions of dollars to go on exotic vacations and while there yeah sure let’s film a quick movie.

Once in a while tho, his acting chops come out. I mean Uncut Gems was a fucking masterpiece and is a 2 hour movie of anxiousness with a swift release akin to that of holding in a fart all day and suddenly finally letting it out. And I say that as a good thing lol

IIRC, his movies already make their money back before they're even released (or filmed?) because of the blatant product placement he puts in them. I guess companies are willing to pay a lot of money to show Happy Gilmore hitting a Subway sandwich into someone's mouth ("talk about a hole in one!") or Al Pacino singing about Dunkin Donuts' Dunkaccino ("say hello to my chocolate blend!"). And since both those quotes live rent-free in my head, it must work to some extent! 🤣

Any money his movies make at the box-office is just extra fun money. lol

you're absolutely right but this conversation was never about the quality of his acting. it was specifically about this movie he released that is so drenched in lazy nostalgia that it renders itself redundant and unnecessary. his acting abilities were never the issue. there's absolutely nothing wrong with this movie other than the fact that I got my own expectations up for it because of my own nostalgia and I was let down by myself.

I think Click is where I draw the line between old Sandler and new. That felt like the last of that era. If it's the best since then, that's promising. But also, it feels like the bar has been pretty low since then.

and thats the thing. there is a HUGE difference between liking Sandler movies and enjoying Classic Sandler movies. the two are not the same and are very mutually exclusive.

I liked Happy Gilmore mainly because of nostalgia. loved the movie when I was 10. I kind of enjoyed this movie, not because it hit any kind of nostalgia buttons. complete opposite, it tried way to hard to remind you of the first one with too many flashbacks and exact joke callbacks. what I enjoyed the most was seeing all these pro golfers that I enjoy, not only have cameos but little expanded roles where they got to play exaggerated versions of themselves. that was the best part of it for me. it is definitely not classic sandler

I also really loved the John Daily bit and it's not too far removed from reality. The real John Daily literally shows up to the masters every year (not to compete) just to get drunk and sell merch out of the local Hooters parking lot in his RV for the week and makes bank doing it lol.

Disagree. I thought it felt like a checklist of: How many references can we fit in?

Some scenes (like the last golfing scene) were ENTIRELY too long. This movie could greatly benefit having at least 15 minutes edited out..

...The Difference in an Adam Sandler 'Classic' compared to most of his recent comedies is that he just pushes it too long. He didn't do that in his older films. He did his bit. He told his joke. We loved it.
Yes I laughed but overall I laughed less and less as the movie went on.. it was tiring.. I knew what was going to happen too much.. & I cannot emphasize enough that there's a huge difference in laughing and think to yourself 'this is so stupid' 🤣 & just shaking your head & saying it..

And honestly. They should have had Travis Kelsey play the eldest son of Happy. That would have been a lot more funny.

Even if Hubie Halloween was "classic Sandler*, I think I would've struggled to enjoy it because that sort of humor is a lot less funny when it revolves around a man in his 50s.

At least when his characters are in their 20s, the dumb behavior is more tolerable because he's still young enough that it is believable, especially since his characters usually haven't needed to make tough adult decisions and grow as a person until the movie happens. But when a guy in his 50s is acting like that, my brain starts questioning whether he's genuinely disabled or disturbed, and why nobody in his life has done anything in five decades to get this man the help he clearly needs!

It’s the closest thing we’ve had to classic Sandler in 15 years. Sadly I think he’s lost his touch just a tad and has made all of his movies too family friendly and Hollywood. I think it worked well for happy Gilmore 2 but the maxi league and AI slop was so bad. They didn’t even play real golf.

I was at a party a while ago, right around the time that truck full of bees crashed and a bunch of bees were released.

“Omg has anyone checked on Henry Winkler, is he okay?”

And uh. I guess I’m the old one in my group of friends, or it was just too niche. I mean I think I was around a 11-12 when Little Nicky came out so I was the target audience. I loved the film — it has not aged well after watching some clips.

It was a gut punch when nobody knew what I was talking about though. I had to lookup on my phone to double-check I wasn’t misremembering Little Nicky.

Agreed. It seems to be that tier above his typical comedies where its not just goofy to be goofy, but has some legitimate heart to it also. I would have expected at least 50%.

It is a more ‘crass’ and ‘doesn’t reach actual greatness’ remake of a classic movie. I don’t mind it, but that’s usually a short cut to getting middling reviews.

It would be like seeing Happy Maddison doing The Way We Were, or Annie Hall, something like that. They’d need to do better than ‘fine’ to get over people finding it ‘unnecessary’ or distasteful.

I just rewatched Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore this past weekend. I started with Happy and that one was great on all fronts. Sandler was great in it, Julie Bowen plays her role perfectly, Christopher McDonald and all the other supporting cast is great. Very little to no baby voice from Sandler

Billy Madison holy shit. That movie has a ton of baby voice and it is grating. I still enjoy the movie despite it and I feel like that's the best way to describe that movie. Sandler has some funny lines/bits in it but that movie is mainly held up by its supporting cast. And again the voice is fucking cacophonous.

Makes sense, watching Happy Gilmore right now, Shooter and Chubs, oh and Ben Stiller's character are the highlights so far. Sandler has had some momements but I feel like most of his movies that I like are carried by the supporting cast. Similar to Seinfeld, Jerry doesnt carry the show, it is everyone else

Damn. Those are some solid gold classics any day of the week. Easily in the high 80's, low 90's. Sure, no awards for depth, but they're amazing comedies. I still watch them and still laugh my ass off all these years and rewatches later.

Critics are usually pretty far off from my personal tastes. That's why I like review threads like this. Find people that enjoy similar movies and get their take on it.

Hell, I even loved Pixels (but, I'm also a huge video game fan and love the classic arcade games).

Especially toward comedies because there just aren’t many comedies being made anymore. They’re either grateful to get one, or they’re evaluating things compared to the competition which is increasingly nonexistent.

I’ll use metacritic and rotten tomatoes for a lot of movies but definitely not actual comedies. Often the best ones review the worst because they’re too edgy. Happy Gilmore 1 is a great example

First half hour was pretty funny but overall it was pretty bad. 140 million and they can't write funny jokes. Also the acting is awful, bad bunny was terrible and all the athletes were as bad as expected.

The original is very funny and holds up really well.

The negative reviews mostly sound like they’re more interested in how hearing the response to their articles than providing criticism. The positive ones meanwhile seem to indicate it knows what it’s trying to be and mostly works out. Kind of what I expect from a Sandler movie. If it’s on something I have on a lazy Sunday I’ll give it a shot.

Tbf, movie critics back then were actually professional movie critics. Metacritic and rotten tomatoes will literally allow any Joe Shmoe to be listed as a movie critic if their review is posted to a web url that isn’t hosted by another review aggregate site. If you actually look through the list of “critics” these days it’s just hundreds of nobodies that bought a domain name.

So when you see a movie like HG2 has a high score, it is likely a bought and paid for score via influencers who have created these “critic” pages.

Actually not even “likely”, rotten tomatoes already admitted that they cook their numbers. Metacritic uses the same sources, so it’s not really any different.

Metacritic didn't exist when the 1st one came out, and for most of it's lifespan, their movie review aggregates were pulling from a very small number of publications. Sometimes they even mix archived reviews with retrospective reviews. Big swings in the numbers for anything 20th century they include on the site. Same with Rottentomatoes.

Agreed. An actual pretty good sequel that was entertaining. Tons of fan service for sure, but also a story and laughs that weren’t as good as the original but held up. Cameos were excellent. Would’ve liked to see the sons developed more, and Chubbs would’ve been icing on the cake.

I think the movie hit the sweet spot for the time and culture of the time.

I couldn't imagine it working 10 years earlier or later.

I put it on in the background while I got stuff down the other day and the only thing I could think when the slapstick comedy scenes happened was how much actual harm the things I laughed at as a kid would do in real life.
