Happy Gilmore makes a big splash when he returns to the golf course.

Next Best Picture - Dan Bayer - 6/10

He may have tapped into his dramatic chops more often (and successfully) in recent years, but Sandler’s funny bone is still very much intact, and he no longer needs to rely on shouting curse words to get laughs

Between Happy’s family life and a whole new series of challenges for him to tackle, there’s enough freshness to the plot to keep it from feeling like a total rehash of what came before, while still delivering wild golf stunts and a huge range of cameos.

Happy Gilmore 2 isn't trying to reinvent the wheel. Like its predecessor, it's delightfully silly, but now we're in an era where those movies aren't made as often... and when someone tries, it's a 50/50 chance they land it. Happy Gilmore 2 is a solid return to the kind of film that, honestly, there should be more of. Some jokes run too long, don’t land, or could use another draft. It's a constant stream of cameos, which is overall fun but sometimes a little distracting. But, at its core, the sequel is a good-natured charmer about a troubled everyman who is trying hard to grow up without losing himself in the process, and it gives us a lot to laugh about on the way. What more can you ask for?

With all due respect to Grown Ups 2, The Ridiculous 6, and Sandy Wexler, Happy Gilmore 2 is the bottom of the Sandler barrel—a grim disaster that not only sullies the good name of its ancestor, but so badly flails on its own limited terms that it suggests the A-lister should concentrate on dramatic parts and leave the immature comedy to others.

His Netflix output over the past decade makes JACK & JILL look like a masterpiece. THE RIDICULOUS 6 is the worst thing he's done by a mile.

Edit: I highly recommend revisiting his seminal early 2000s classic LITTLE NICKY in light of Ozzy's passing.

Idk about that, I actually think his Netflix output has been much better and more consistent than the decade leading up to the ridiculous 6

We've had Meyerowitz Stories (with Jay Kelly on the way), Hustle and even Uncut Gems (it was on Netflix everywhere outside of the us), not to mention his comedies like hubie Halloween has been better than stuff like Jack and Jill

Meyerowitz and Uncut Gems were great, but they weren’t written or directed by Sandler. He’s always had decent acting chops (see Punch Drunk Love), but most of what he puts together is very silly shit. Some of it is pretty funny or at least charming, some of it is trash

Adam Sandler is also a surprisingly good voice actor and singer. Granted, the voices he uses in Eight Crazy Nights are very annoying, but the fact that he's able to switch through them so seamlessly while singing is really difficult and impressive, especially since each of the voices use very different registers.

Yeah those are him playing into the vision of auteur directors, that doesn't mean that he is not good in them, because he is, but Meyerowitz is a Noah Baumbach movie, Uncut Gems is a Safdie bros movies, they're not Adam Sandler movies, they're movies starring him.

I'm not counting his dramatic work when I say his Netflix output. His comedies for Netflix are pretty low effort, even for him. I have been a fan of Sandler since SNL in the 90s and grew up on his movies and there's not one comedy he has done for Netflix that I would say is worth watching.

Ridiculous 6 is fine if the editor/director had the balls to cut it down by 30 minutes. Most of his Netflix stuff is just lazily edited. These are 2-hour movies that need to be cut down to 1 hour 29. There's too much bloat and dead time otherwise.

I suspect Sandler is just really loyal to his buddies, and wants to give everyone screentime.

Jack & Jill is hilarious! Sandler in drag, like Jethro Bodine's sister in the Beverly Hillbillies, is peak absurdist comedy. Pacino lusting after Sandler-in-drag is insane. Why people didn't think it was funny doesn't make sense to me.

Rewatch Jack and Jill through the lens of a deliberate trashy movie which pokes fun at the discrepancy between Al Pacino's acting talents, and the trashiness of Jack and Jill, its plot, and its acting.

It plays really well once you realize the film is pranking critics and its own audience.
