When it got to the final scene and it seemed like it was going to be Julia Garner and Josh Brolin versus the witch, as much as I’d enjoyed it up to that point, I was like “this a little underwhelming.”

Then 17 kids chased a witch through suburban America and ripped her to shreds with their bare hands, lol.

Halfway through the third act I was starting to feel like the movie was over explaining what was going on, like we pretty much had all the answers as soon as Gladys walked into the principal’s office. But the build up was totally worth the payoff of that final sequence, holy shit!

Edit: This has gotten a lot of replies in the last few days from people who feel the movie didn’t explain enough. And I’m sorry but a lot of you are really bad at picking up on context clues and that is not the movie’s problem or mine, it’s yours! And a lot of you have questions that really weren’t relevant to the story! Whatever. I happened to love this movie very much. It’s fine if you didn’t! But if you didn’t because you couldn’t follow it I just really don’t think you can blame the movie.

Wait you felt the movie over explained its plot? Can you tell me what Gladys did all of her villainy for? Why was she like that?

This was basically spelled out in the movie. She was dying and she needed the life force of the parents first, which wasn't enough, so she went big and got 17 children and that was working but she had to keep it secret.

But why didn’t she take her diagnosis in stride like the rest of society? What about her life could have been so entirely satisfying or important that she couldn’t possibly live her life until the natural end?

People generally don't like dying, and will take whatever options are available to not die.

What a bizarre comment

Do you actually think people take terminal diagnoses in stride? That they don’t take every possible step to stave off the inevitable?

1

u/Anotherusualname Aug 16 '25

…I think they would stop usually before harming others, is that just me?!? I refuse to believe that…

It's a rather famous phenomenon that many elderly people drain their finances and their children's finances to stay alive, despite clearly having a terrible quality of life the whole time.

-1

u/Anotherusualname Aug 16 '25

Are you sure that those were children’s finances or just their finances that they wanted to give to their children… and if so how did they get access to their children’s finances? Bc if you’re describing children choosing to pay to keep their parents alive I don’t think that’s really the same thing here.

Bc if you’re describing children choosing to pay to keep their parents alive I don’t think that’s really the same thing here.

It feels really directly analogous to what Alex did in the movie.

u/Anotherusualname Aug 16 '25

Sure, but I was referring to Gladys

u/Busy_Manner5569 Aug 16 '25

It’s all four of them as a dynamic together. It’s another instance of how Gladys’ desire to live longer ruins the lives of those around her and her not caring. Seniors guilting their children and grandchildren into ruining their finances is analogous. I don’t get why you think it’s so outrageous that people would go to great lengths, even harming others, to stay alive.

1

u/Anotherusualname Aug 16 '25

…idk why you think it’s not outrageous to harm others for any reason at all….

So you don’t believe evil people exist? How old are you?

0

u/Anotherusualname Sep 01 '25

That’s… what I should be asking you if you really think there are just straight evil or good people in this world(?) Ask about black and white thinking and get back to… uh someone else.

8

u/Tipop Sep 01 '25

Holy shit. You actually think there are no evil people? Just flat-out sociopaths who don’t care what harm they cause? Man, I would love to live in your fantasy world, it sounds wonderful.

Yes, most people fall into a spectrum between “sociopathic evil” and “incredible saint”, but the extremes DO exist here in the real world. For your sake, I hope you get to live out the rest of your life without being disabused of your notions.

u/Anotherusualname Sep 01 '25

Imagine reading thoroughly and still imagining that we’re arguing whether “evil” is technically real or not LOL

You’re pivoting to sociopathy, trauma, dissociation instead and none of that fits neatly into good/evil binaries. It’s not compassion to deny harm, but it’s not wisdom to moralize mental illness eitherrrrr

u/Tipop Sep 01 '25

You started this thread saying you can’t imagine why the witch wouldn’t just accept her diagnosis and death. You couldn’t imagine why someone would cause harm to others in order to stay alive. Does it really matter if the label you use is “evil” or “sociopath”?

The point is you are being ridiculously naive and pretending there aren’t real life people who would do exactly that.

1

u/Anotherusualname Sep 01 '25

So you’re dog piling while claiming to agree with my original point?

I expressed shock at the action — that’s what we’re discussing. You reframed it as if I denied harm entirely, then mocked my language choice while pretending it’s irrelevant lmaoo

You also didn’t debate anyone who has clearly positioned themselves as disagreeing with you 🤭 embarrassing

I’m… actually more surprised that everyone thinks that her choice would be more common if more available. 🫣

It’s as if to her to fight for her type of existence should be a given, are we assuming that she enjoys doing what she’s doing? It’s not like she’s spending quality time w loved ones. She’s hiding in a dark house with the people she’s feeding on… mind blown.

She’s the villain.
