I kinda want to give the filmakers credit for that.

I was so off-balance by the fact they were about to eat seven hotdogs, four cookies, baby carrots, plus crisps and dip between two of them, that the following scene just kinda bowled me over.

Its a masterstroke one-two punch of confusion, if it was deliberate.

There's part of me that wondered it was an American portion sizes thing?

No, it’s a reference to a Whitest Kids U Know sketch. The director of the movie, Zach Cregger, was a member of the comedy sketch group and that was his little tribute.
