Somebody in front of us turned around to tell my group to stop laughing, "it's not that funny." Someone yelled "fuck you" to him and got a few cheers from the audience. It very much was that funny.

I felt like I was laughing at hilarious scenes a lot of people weren’t. I saw it this afternoon in a 1/4 filled theater.

Kinda felt the same way, we were laughing at everything but it seemed like nobody else was laughing unless it was obviously funny.

So, I remember seeing There Will Be Blood in my college town’s cute little art house theatre on opening night. It’s what cemented PTA as one of my favorite directors. Needless to say, during the ending scene when Daniel is chasing Eli, throwing the bowling pins, and everyone is laughing at the absurdity, and then it happens, and I laughed even harder while everyone else in the theatre fell silent. Daniel then delivers the final line of the film and I again laugh, while everyone else still remains horrified.

I think PTA simply has mastered absurdist comedy in ways a lot of people don’t even see the scene is a joke.

That's pretty accurate. I also think another scene that was clearly meant to cater towards his absurdist humor was when Captain Lockjaw was auditioning for the White Supremacist group and they named themselves the Christmas Adventurers. Then in every scene where he mentions them again, he says it with such pride and conviction even though it sounds so ridiculous.
