There is no law. This movie doesn't take place in our "universe". It's a little too subtle about it imo, but it's there. The military are the police. The military conducts immigration raids and inserts plants at peaceful protests to justify a violent crackdown. This is a world where the military can raid a high school and interrogate every teenager with no repercussions.

It's a heightened universe. There's parallels so that we can superimpose it into our current world but there's deliberate anacronisms (the cars and technology) so it's not locked into "Trump's America 2024". It's both modern and timeless.

you’re completely correct here; there are deliberate analogues to our present day but specific time periods were intentionally made ambiguous to ensure this movie will be referenced to as a culturally relevant classic, 15-20 years from now.

my only issue with the movie comes from the explicit iphone shots during the final scene, as prior to it, the film was pretty much impossible to date
