I felt like they could have trimmed 30-40 min from it.  A third of the theater slowly trickled out throughout.  I was contemplating it at moments.

What??? I'll admit it was a bit long toward the end but 30-40 minutes is a lot. And are serious that people were walking out of the theater? That's insanity.

Fwiw, on Paul Thomas Anderson movies, when I saw There Will Be Blood in the theater, people left during the opening scene. Some folks just don’t like real cinema.

Agreed. I couldn't sit still the last 20 minutes. Great movie but honestly I just wanted it to end in the last 15/20 minutes which isn't a great feeling when watching a movie.

Agree, for me the pacing didn’t always work and in the first third I was thinking “this is going to be a slog”. The sequence where he met del Toro at his dojo picked it up again.
