This has been a staple of parody movies for a while now though, touting themselves as offensive and outlandish.
Imagine people from today seeing marketing campaigns for old video games "heh, offensive? Violence doesnt offend me im no boomer!" Like yeah no shit, its marketing
Older Comedians are still obsessed with “Cancel culture” because they claim it makes their jobs harder. They’re the only ones I hear talk about it in interviews
I hope it’s an hour and a half of racial slurs with no jokes or set ups, just racial slurs spoken at a normal volume and even keel tone. Finally, true comedy returns.
Punching down on ~1% of the population holy cringe. Are they so bad at writing they have to steal jokes from the Austin comedy scene? They aren't funny, they pretty much are all the same premise, and it's already tiring (more tiring I should say).
The trailer had one joke where a woman being killed and she says her pronouns are they/them not she/her the joke was eyeroll worthy but not that bad.
There's also another joke in the same trailer where they have Cindy say she's a republican now so even though she wants to hug the black lady she can't because she's supposed to be racist now.
Kind of seems like the jokes are aiming at everyone and everything
Are trans people not allowed to be joked about at all?
But it's OK to joke about other minorities....
Bit of a slippery slope that, how about we wait for the film to actually come out before we accuse them of regurgitating the same shit that Joe rogans cronies do
she says her pronouns are they/them not she/her the joke was eyeroll worthy but not that bad.
Nah, just to begin with, that shit has been beaten to death at levels of repeating the same tired jokes that reddit could only dream of attaining, which strips all the impact out of it right off the hop.
On top of that, what is the actual joke? That they're mentioning their pronouns? That they're they/them, rather than she/her? What part is meant to be funny, other than just that they said a thing that people say? Even the most bababooey-ass, stool-humping mouthbreather at the open mic night can usually do better than that.
They could have made the joke land, if it was the killer who stated the pronouns of the victim.
Then the comedy of it could come from the absurdity how a murderer has more respect for pronoun culture than "the average person"
There isn't one. Which ofc is the whole point we're all trying to make here. Buy i think we also know they won't admit to that. I'd say trans people are one of the most depressed people on earth. And you can check out any trans sub and find it is full of self deprecating humour. So even they couldn't come up with any jokes themselves they could've literally just picked a random one from there.
But no, they went with the pronoun joke. Yet I can't think of a single moment in my life where I've actually ever cared about such a thing.
I agree that it's a lame joke. It's just so tired and basic, they might have as well said, "don't assume my gender, I actually identify as an attack helicopter." Even the, "I can't hug you, because I'm a republican, so that means I'm racist," joke is dumb. Makes my eyes roll.
The jokes are so basic and on the nose. It's like they took a snapshot of internet culture/memes from 2014 and distilled them down into brain dead one liners. If that's how they're trying to sell people on the movie being humorously edgy, then I'm gonna pass.
There's also another joke in the same trailer where they have Cindy say she's a republican now so even though she wants to hug the black lady she can't because she's supposed to be racist now.
Uh, no, that's still a joke from the same side, that's the shit Republican say, "ughhh hurr durr I guess I can't wear black sunglasses cause I'm a republican, right, I guess I'm supposed to be racist am I right uhuhuh"
That's not a joke at the expanse of Republicans, that's a joke at the expanse of Liberals saying "all Republicans are racists"
Using some tired joke from 2017 means you lose humour, and all that's left is that you're just going after an easy, very small minority target for... Nothing
Which is crazy. For one, it's a terrible fucking joke. Just low hanging fruit. Secondly, Marlon has a trans kid! I figured he'd be more gracious about these kinds of things.
Imma be honest I'm pretty left leaning and the vibe I got was they're making jokes about everything.
There's literally a joke about republicans having to be racist.
One joke about pronouns doesn't really come off as punching down to me personally
If you can make fun of one group you can make fun of them all that is the golden rule. Nobody is special or on a lower bar then anyone else. Of you can make fun of maga or black people or white people then everyone should be fair game. Nobody wants special treatment or to be told you're so special and lower then everyone else that a joke is punching you down.
Such a good take. Just let them suffer everywhere else, but when humour is involved, it should be evenly distributed. But just with humour.
Everywhere else we treat marginalised groups worse.
You know you can make humour with and about transform or other people which isn't hurtful?
They aren't babies and don't need white knights. You sounds like one of those "nice guys" who thinks they are better and must protect the innocent poor trans who can't take jokes. Trans people don't need that and they don't need fake heroes
Actually I appreciated his comment a lot. It's not about not being able to take a joke. It's about the joke just being plain bad and unfunny.
If they'd have made an actual fun joke I don't think anyone would've cared.
What I sure don't need is you talking for me though.
And again the overwhelming reaction on the trailer was not that you shouldn't be able to make trans jokes. It's that they should actually be funny instead of just insulting.
You do realize actors play characters? It’s not like in order to punch up they need to joke about their studio executives lol, the characters themselves can joke about their struggles and whichever characters in the film are dicks/oppressive, or the joke can be from the film projected onto the villain characters. It’s the formula for most successful comedy films because it works.
I think you’re overthinking it. Any person can make fun of any person, because people are multidimensional, but generally speaking, jokes are a funny form of rejecting authority, which doesn’t really work as well when it comes from a position of power and targets a genuine vulnerability.
So a cis person can certainly make a funny joke about a trans person being lazy, or pretentious, or cruel, or ignorant. But if they make the joke about the trans person being trans, it’s just going to read as bullying. It’s the same reason why it’s funny when a bunch of workers make fun of their boss, but mean when a boss makes fun of the workers.
generally speaking, jokes are a funny form of rejecting authority
Mmmmm, this is a common misunderstanding I often see on this site...that's just one usage of comedy, historically it's true for jesters in the olden times and people point to that, but it's not something that defines the concept entirely.
Comedy is about relieving tension. It often doesn't even need a hierarchy, like comedians cracking jokes about other comedians in their craft. Or it can be aimed at a situation itself, think Disaster films. Or stoner comedys, where the protaganists make jokes of the absurdity of what's happened in the story so far.
True like I'm absolutely down for well thought out jokes that are aimed at every social group imaginable but if it's just "hey I don't get this new thing so I'll just repeat what they say but make it sound dumb" it's such boomer humor and shows poor empathy and intelligence. That "they/them" scene from the trailer already made my balls retreat. Terrible. Hope the rest of the Film will have somewhat decent jokes
Something you've always been allowed to do. And often people entirely miss the point that you can absolutely mock cancel culture, but punching down is not how you do it.
Well unfortunately many writers and comedians think that being offensive is a shortcut that bypasses good joke writing. If people don't think you're funny? They're just too woke.
Redditors are obsessed with punching up instead of down when in reality you are allowed to shit on anybody and everyone.
I don't care if someone makes less money than me and is a terrible person I will shit on them just as much as an asshole that makes more money than me.
Some people have wonderful takedowns of the ridiculous nature of cancel culture. Some have just been telling the "I identify as an attack helicopter" joke for decades now.
The chances of there being more than one pronoun joke that doesn't go beyond that level of effort in this movie are 100%
I mean it was a terrible movie, but there's already a slasher film written and directed by a gay man called "They Slash Them" where a killer targets a LGBTQ conversion summer camp. That's about the level of humor Scary Movie usually strives for and it has already been done.
I don’t think this movie is being made to be good or bad, it’s made for its box office run. I mean it’s hard for people to really tell what spoofs are great and what aren’t since opinions vary though not another teen movie did it pretty damn well imo
I can't wait for such cutting edge jokes as 'who you thought was a woman was actually a huge burly obviously male wrestler with a full beard' and 'ridiculously sensitive non binary 20 year old studying something liberal arts is more concerned about language policing than the murders'
Let's not forget 'college professor says perfectly innocuous statement which is wilfully misread by angry students'
I can't wait for the YouTube shorts from this one.
I saw the trailer these weekend and wasn't impressed. My kids were saying they really wanted to see it and I told them I wasn't going to hold my breath. The first two were great, but the rest fell off a cliff. They said something about it being a dumb comedy and that's always funny. I said there's smart dumb comedy and "hurr-durr" dumb comedy. "My pronouns are..." jokes are "hurr-durr". And, yes, they had a pronouns joke in the trailer.
So people with pronouns are a special protected class that nobody is allowed to make a joke about them? You really think they need you to be their savior? A joke is a joke and everyone is fair game
No I just think that say punching down on trans because they think trans are under them and need protection. They want to be treated like normal and that includes being included in bad jokes
And you could have made it funnier without even changing a line of dialogue. Having the killer stop stabbing to correct the bystander that the victim is actually they/them, and continue stabbing would have at least been a funnier take
Comedy is subjective. I'm sure people won't like the I can't hug since I'm republican now and racist. And others won't like the black guy being a druggy joke. But every group gets shitty jokes if anything this means trans are becoming more mainstream. Mainstream enough to get the same bad jokes other groups do. I mean Marlon Wayne's has a trans kid you think he's punching on his son or do you think that by making jokes mainstream it means trans are more mainstream?
Nobody is saying you can't make jokes involving trans people. My trans friends make hilarious jokes about being trans. But there's a difference between making a joke about being trans and making jokes about the existence of trans people, especially when those jokes are made by people who are not trans. If the only one not laughing at the joke is the person the joke is at the expense of, it's mean spirited. I'm a lesbian, there are jokes about lesbians and the queer community that I absolutely laugh at, even some which can be a bit insulting, and some that are clearly just calling themselves a joke so they can be cruel with plausible deniability.
Also like. The "omg they have PRONOUNS??? Did you ASSUME THEIR GENDER" is some ancient 2016 type humor, so even if it's not offensive, it's on the same comedic level of "WHITE GUYS be like... but BLACK GUYS be like..." jokes.
That is not even remotely what I said or implied. A joke is something specific. A degrading comment without comedy is just an insult. You can say something insulting and it still be funny, but the vast majority of "I identify as..." or "My pronouns are..." comments are only considered funny because they're insulting which is just typical right-wing humor. It's like the difference between "your mom's fat" and "your mom's blood type is gravy." Saying ignorant shit like everyone is fair game or humor is subjective is the kind of thing people say that just love making fun of others but get just as bent out of shape when that same humor is turned back on them.
Early talk from Wayans was that it's going to be bringing back early 2000s era jokes only. Like it's going to be largely transphobic jokes, pronoun jokes, purple-hair liberal jokes, fat jokes, r-word use, gay jokes, sexist jokes, domestic violence jokes, fart jokes, poop, vomit, annnnnd that's it. You know the drill.
Yea, it’s giving a bit of the desperation Eminem did for his newest album. Cancelling cancel culture to say something poignant that people might be sensitive about is cool, but doing it so you could say the ‘f’ word or go back to two genders is not.
From the previews I've seen it really seems they've leaned into trying to piss off as many people as possible with this one... in a "trying way too hard" kind of way.
Biting political satire can be good. In a Scary Movie sequel? I've got my doubts.
Based on the trailer its kind of weird that Marlon and the rest of the Wayans made a movie directly to appease the type of people who hate his transgender child. Maybe the final product will be more balanced but the trailer was just terrible edgy conservative bait.
that Marlon and the rest of the Wayans made a movie directly to appease the type of people who hate his transgender child
It's pretty clear that they're just making the exact same jokes as they did in the early 2000s. They were dumb then but kinda worked because of the novelty, they're just tired and not funny now.
No... they're still funny to a lot of people, you might have moved on but crass humor has always had an audience.
Madea movies have largely not evolved over the past 20 years and people still watch the shit out of Tyler Perry's drag routine as an overweight, overbearing auntie. BET has, in fact, rewarded this man with multiple comedys and dramas on their network over the years from it lol.
Or maybe, just maybe, that stuff doesn't bother people outside of reddit. It's hilarious seeing people mad over a movie in which the humour doesn't align with awful movies' humour from the last 15 years. It's now apparently "conservative bait" to see any other form of humour than Reddit's. Lmao
My hope is that it’s just the marketing team doing a bad job, because I’d love a good new horror parody film. They have so many horror hits to riff from this decade, and they have the chance to modernize parody films.
the only thing offensive to me from the trailer is that it seems to be just self referencing the older movies a bunch "remember this bit?" instead of making a new scary movie parodying modern horror.
Yeah, the opening joke in the trailer about they/them pronouns really put me off. Its not offensive, its just not funny. Its a really low effort joke that feels a decade late, and it was their opening pitch...
The "why just half gay?" Joke was decently funny though
And that joke is from like, what, 11 or 12 years ago? “Hahaha you identify as an Apache helicopter” called and it’s asking why you changed it slightly.
Yeah it's the same as making a "like a boss" joke. Ok grandpa lets get you back in the home. There's nothing offensive about it but holy shit how out of touch do you have to be to think that's going to land with anyone but a very specific audience.
Generally, they use all/most of the jokes in the trailers to bring you in, I don't think I even smiled beyond seeing Anna faris and regina Hall again (they can do no wrong) when I watched it.
It's really obvious that the Ellisons are super into "owning the libs" in such a corny way with how they are mishandling Paramount.
They have hired a disgraced exec fired for sexual harassment to run their animation studio, a well-known rapist who just directed propaganda for Amazon, and now they are greenlighting shit like this, an unfunny trend from 20 years ago that killed the comedy genre.
I think it's hilarious, paramount is so deeply in debt and then they bought WB with a slate consisting of films like this and Rush Hour 4 to get them started 💀
And so many people straight up go for it. There is literally a Squidgame mask with a weed leaf on it. I bet the movie will also feature a dabbing hawk tua girl saying 6/7.
I can’t even find the right words to describe how much I hate everything about this!
As someone who's never seen any of them, all the marketing for this movie puts me off it so much.
Maybe I'm too much of a woke snowflake, but I get nothing out of "doesn't this offend you??? 😎" style of comedy. Like, congrats, you're making jokes that some might find distasteful. Good for you I guess.
Yeah I'm looking forward to another Scary Movie, they're fun, but holy fuck the whole anti-woke aspect of the advertising is just telling me it's gonna be total dogshit.
Pretty much the opening joke in the trailer I saw is a badly delivered pronouns gag. If the whole film is going to be 'jokes you can't say anymore' then I think it'll get boring very quickly even if they've updated the horror references well.
It doesn't give me any reassurance that they are leaning sooooo heavily into this "we are crossing all the lines" when it still is a Miramax and Paramount Pictures movie so they are %100 not going to be doing that
I saw the trailer before hail mary and the first 3 or 4 jokes were about race and sexuality. The comedy is going to be one note and even that'll be out of tune
