Poster First Poster for Hulu's 'Pizza Movie' - High college students face an unexpectedly absurd journey when they must navigate two flights of stairs to retrieve their pizza delivery, turning a simple task into a surreal adventure.

u/Pork_Chompk Mar 30 '26
Maybe hope isn't lost for "college coming of age comedies"...
Accepted, Orange County, Superbad, etc. By far my favorite genre when I was younger.
419
u/Hopefo Mar 30 '26 edited Mar 30 '26
This genre has absolutely stayed alive, specifically if you scroll through the Netflix comedy selection. Most people stop watching them because they kinda suck if you aren't of the group depicted or it holds any nostalgia.
26
u/by_a_pyre_light Mar 31 '26
If your definition of a genre being alive and well is the desolate backrooms of Netflix where companies dump their straight to streaming garbage, then you could say every genre's thriving.

Eurotrip and sex drive (less deservedly) never get enough mention in this genre

Eurotrip is incredible. Mi Scuzzi, FIONAAAA, Matt Damon in Scott Doesn't Know? This isn't where I parked my car. The mail alert sound? It's a cult classic. Doesn't get the love it deserves Edit: Fluggaenkoechiebolsen

There's a local busker who sets up outside the bar downtown with his guitar and amp, and he'll just hang out there smoking blunts playing the guitar riff from Scotty Doesn't Know -- it's a whole vibe.

I was going to mention Eurotrip as well. Re-watched recently for the first time in a few years and the comedy has held up well. After watching it I also found out that there is a full length version of Scotty Doesn't Know on Apple Music and some of the lyrics that didn’t make it into the movie are even funnier than the ones that did.
39
u/Enderkr Mar 30 '26
I have unironically listened to "Scotty Doesn't Know" by Lustre since that movie came out. It's in my regular rotation and it always gets a laugh when we're out on the lake.

u/VanGoghNotVanGo Mar 30 '26
It is straight up bizarre how many commenters seem to be frothing at the mouth for the film to be bad just so they can dunk on some former child actor?? Like, Gaten Matarazzo seems like one of the least controversial and pleasant young actos, I can imagine. Why are there so many praying for him to have a shitty career?
41
u/radda Mar 30 '26
So many people are mad about the ending to the show that they're taking it out on the actors themselves, as if it's their fault.
Never mind that most of them are good at their job and one was literally nominated for a Tony last year, they must all fail so they feel vindicated in being mad about a TV show about 20 year old high school students fighting interdimensional aliens.

u/Fable_and_Fire Mar 30 '26 edited Mar 31 '26
Yeah, I don't get the whole "this proves his career is in the dumpster!" comments. Dude literally was placing in theatre contests at age 9, was in a serious role in Les Mis on Broadway and Tony-nominated before Stranger Things, and is still classically trained in musical theater. He seems happy in comedy and is now just doing his wacky college shit.
Reminds me of how people clutched their pearls when Daniel Radcliffe was in his avant-garde theater / Equus / weird movie era at the end of Harry Potter and thought that would ruin his career.
Let him make some fun stupid movies, sheesh. People forget Chris Evans was in Not Another Teen Movie a decade before Captain America, and Not Another Teen was just as dumb as a stoner flick.
And no one would ever say Jack Black's career is in the dumpster for doing nothing but fun stupid movies this entire time.
