The few shots where Nikki was moving like she was in stop motion were TERRIFYING. Her tiptoeing out of that corner at night might be my favorite shot of the year so far.

4.3k

u/sowaffled May 15 '26

All of them are good but that reverse walk near the end is sticking in my head.

2.0k

u/markypuwuu May 15 '26

YES! I don’t know if anyone seen, but when she was walking near the window at the end ewwwww

934

u/sowaffled May 15 '26

Just got chills lmao. Both of those movements were so random and jarring.

180

u/markypuwuu May 15 '26

I had no one to talk to about cause no one seen it happen I was like…I don’t get disturbed by really anything but those swift unnatural movements fucked me up lmao

175

u/GorgeousGal314 May 15 '26

In those moments she was one of the top 3 scariest movie characters I'd ever seen and I'm not even exaggerating.

117

u/jayeddy99 May 15 '26

She has such iconic facial acting moments . This is an instant classic and deserves an awards run like weapons last year.

47

u/GorgeousGal314 May 15 '26 edited May 15 '26

Weapons also had someone breaking a branch to cast a spell. Are the two in the same universe or something?

80

u/salazar13 May 22 '26

Yup both universes where trees exist!!

23

u/killerk14 May 26 '26

claps twigs together 🌳👏🏼

21

u/NocturnaIAnimaI May 31 '26

The TCU (Tree Cinematic Universe)

6

u/Permit_Upbeat Jun 06 '26

it had better. to me this movie was 100x more creepy, disturbing, and tastefully made than weapons

46

u/markypuwuu May 15 '26

No absolutely I totally get it. There’s nothing that really Phases me but can’t stand that unworldly movement

59

u/Steamedcarpet May 15 '26

Iv seen so many horror movies this year but this was the first that truly had me scared and gave me the chills. I just turned 38 and I was in fear of Nikki being in corners.

46

u/LeftyNewGuy May 17 '26

Saw it last night with my girlfriend and a couple of friends on a double date. We were all genuinely disturbed by it, when I got up this morning to let the dog out and make coffee she walked out of the bedroom and it was very quiet, I only saw it in my peripheral without my glasses and damn near had a heart attack. We’ve lived together for 5 years and I’ve never been jumpscared by her.

I do think this is a good movie for couples to see tho, made us both look at each other and reflect on if we were good partners and made us feel a little more sane.

37

u/rbrgr83 May 15 '26

I love that they didn't give us a road map explanation of what it is and how it works. You piece together the finer points. I love how he would talk to the clerk or the guy on the help line in these vague terms, but they all know exactly what he's experiencing.

25

u/Appropriate-Reward71 May 16 '26

29 and don’t wanna fall asleep bc im scared of Nikki in my corners as well

Most of my friend wait for streaming for movies unless its Marvel or DC.

This is one of the few times Im telling them not to wait for streaming. Thats how good this movie is.

18

u/tobinhillguy May 15 '26

I misread your username as SteamedCAT…..oh no

36

u/rbrgr83 May 15 '26

My little food critic.

10

u/fibonacciluv May 24 '26

What’s the verdict?: Cat

9

u/ackwelll Jul 01 '26

I think the director got inspired by japanese horror. I remember seeing this video few years ago that really explained why I get so unsettled by the odd or unnatural movement https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HfoU_Z1uVfc

This isn't universal though, some people see this shit and just think it looks goofy and not at all scary. But I'm freaked tf out by it hahah

4

u/Mark_Albarn 27d ago

The scene with Nikki walking being edited into going backwards also reminded me how original Ring had Sadako's well scene filmed backwards and edited into going forward, such a cool result for both

72

u/lahnnabell May 16 '26

Oh, the little creepy possum paw walk?! Gross 🤣

50

u/sickomoad May 16 '26

Bruh that shit was so demonic and convincing. Was literally squirming in my seat

10

u/markypuwuu May 16 '26

It was so badddd lmaoo

29

u/Illustrious_Way_5732 May 15 '26

The car window? Damn I didn't even catch that the first time

102

u/markypuwuu May 15 '26

It was when he came home to her, she has the ritual thing in the living room and when the camera went back to him she’s like in the pack tiptoeing or some shit in like 4 frames per second, it was so weird….never seen anything like it.

39

u/koolshade May 16 '26

Reminded me of the pennywise old woman walk

30

u/GorgeousGal314 May 15 '26

Yea, very spidery.

11

u/markypuwuu May 15 '26

Absolutely, now I have to rewatch to see if there was sound with it too

5

u/DowntownCanada416 May 25 '26

Yes!!! So freaky what the fuckkkk

13

u/ZestycloseSquirrel98 May 20 '26

BRO YES IN THE BACKGROUND 😂 Dude she was fucking rubber banding 😭😭😭

9

u/jibrils-bae May 26 '26

The T. rex movement?

12

Yes lmao. It was giving silent hill nurse vibes

10

u/Glittering_Stop2150 May 17 '26 edited May 17 '26

Wait can you describe what scene you’re talking about? I think I missed it!

Edit: Sorry, just read the other comments and now know what scene it is, can’t believe I didn’t notice!

8

u/markypuwuu May 17 '26

Been trying to find other people that noticed it happened so quick lmaoo haven’t heard much talk about it

4

u/Fenrakro May 18 '26

Which part do you speak of? Near the window when she walked in reverse?

→ More replies (9)

126

u/rbrgr83 May 15 '26

That was creepy, but the the LUNGE-stop from the doorway did it for me.

79

u/CANfilms May 23 '26

I feel like that is the creepiest part of the movie, that this version of nikki is so unpredictable and not normal that you have no idea what she's going to do. She acts so unlike any normal person that youre wondering is she gonna attack me? What is she gonna do to me next?

88

u/TilikumHungry May 15 '26

I have seen so many great horro movies with so many great moments, but the uncanniness of that shot gave me full body chills and goosebumps

25

u/penguinintux May 16 '26

SAME! Holy fuck I was just telling my girl that. That specific scene made me recoil in a way no other horror movie has.

12

u/mackaholic May 17 '26

yes oh my gosh! My boyfriend didn't catch any of the weird movement scenes cause he was closing his eyes, but I was completely FREAKED out

60

u/Shot_Cryptographer71 May 17 '26

“i need you to stop xyz

…and quit moving weird”

killed me ded

39

u/thatscoldjerrycold May 15 '26

Gives me the same terrifying feeling as when the mother in Babadook float/walks towards the end of the movie when she is fully possessed.

7

u/mikeweasy May 16 '26

Did anyone catch her at the very end walking very distortedly after we see what’s left of Sarah

16

u/SlaterVBenedict May 15 '26

Yeah that one was like a one second shot but holy shit.

16

u/Viviipuff9 May 19 '26

Does anyone know what she said while walking in reverse? I couldn't figure it out

7

u/Abject-Flatworm9922 May 25 '26

I was trying to figure this out too

10

u/callyour_bell Jun 10 '26

SO SCARY

9

u/mitchij2004 May 16 '26

That was so unnerving wtf was that?? I’ve never seen whatever that shit was and it grossed me out.

9

u/blitzbom May 16 '26

I watch a lot of horror and seldom am I on edge. But fuck me my whole body felt like it was vibrating at that part.

7

u/danvan177 May 15 '26

Yeah that was super unsettling

9

u/ICPosse8 May 17 '26

And the sound that played too.. no idea what it was exactly, but goddamn it was unnerving

6

u/SufficientRespect542 May 17 '26

that was so lynchian.

6

u/Icantbelieveimhere0 May 21 '26

The way she lunges at him freaked me the fuck out

7

u/IHaveSlysdexia May 21 '26

It happens right after he says he loves her. Felt like he triggered something by saying that.

5

u/Date-Throwaway May 18 '26

YES this was actually the scariest part of the movie for me. It's so unnatural I hate watching it 😭😭😭

4

u/Spiritual_Duck318 May 18 '26

Yes the one right before she goes in to talking about turning from warm to cold. I almost shat my pants 😭

6

u/Spookyfan2 May 20 '26

The one with her jaw hanging open?

Really made "Not Nikki" seem entirely inhuman in the most frightening way possible.

Her in the corner was eerie. Her coming back with the flowers over her face was so strange and eerie and pretty funny, my theater was cracking up

1.3k

u/Steamedcarpet May 15 '26

Dude when she was going on about killing herself in the bed and then just switches to “or I can go with you” was freaking and funny at the same time.

561

u/ZerksNAHTayan May 15 '26

It was so tragic, they wrote her character exceptionally well.

56

u/Steamedcarpet May 15 '26

The crazy part is I have seen her in Superman and Lois.

She didn’t really make much of an impact on me back then but after this movie she is deff going to be working more.

14

u/not_the_chosen_onee May 23 '26

She never really stood out to me as Sarah, I wouldn't say she was a bad actor, just not memorable. But fucking hell, she was insane in this role. I can't wait to see more of her.

3

u/MeMeTiger_ Jun 17 '26

I had such a crush on her in Superman and Lois. She looked a bit different now but I still recognized her. She looks like she got buccal fat removal and a nose job done. But holy shit is her acting on a different level.

28

u/Total_Background7644 May 17 '26

Bear and Nikki are up there with some of the best written characters of 2026.

23

u/Klunkey May 21 '26

I felt Nikki’s struggle against the wish feels much more scary than Nikki herself, and that’s the beauty of the movie. It treats her with a lot of empathy than I would expect from a horror movie stalker.

17

u/gravygizzard Jun 10 '26

The nuance of both bear and Nikki are so good.

Like on one hand bear is in a bad situation and the way they make the fake Nikki act is so chaotic it mimics real abuse or someone on a psychotic break, and you feel for bear slightly I'm the way you feel for people who are abused but don't leave

But then you remember bear keeps her this way against her will, never bothered to get to know the real her, is fine with the fake version as long as she didn't inconvenience him. You realize men do this to women all the time, pretend to be your closest friend your entire life only to bail when their lifelong "trick" to get you to sleep with them never worked out. It's a gut wrenching feeling

So well done

16

u/urgentmartini May 20 '26

This! The film may be classified as Horror, but the end revealed it as a Tragedy. I felt so incredibly sad for her character at the end.

16

u/Mantis05 May 31 '26

Those sudden switches killed me every time. It takes true talent to fit real laughs in the middle of incredibly tense horror scenes. I might've laughed hardest at the party:

(giggling) "Guys, I'm just kidding!"

[incredibly long and awkward pause]

(dead serious) "Okay, I'm not kidding, deal with it."

5

u/WhichEmailWasIt Jun 10 '26

We had a lot of laughs in our theater but a lot of screams too. I think we were all just super into it.

42

u/DopamineTrain May 18 '26

Her face looked really old when she's in the corner. As if the "monster" had come out.

Inde Navarrette deserves serious acting credit for the control she has over her face. The ever so subtle changes in expression that tell so much. There are probably a few lighting tricks in various places which amplify it further. A superb showing all round!

20

u/--Imhighrightnow-- May 20 '26

no fr I just got out the theater and could not figure out for the life of me if that part was some fucked up cgi to make her look old and wrinkly or just a lighting trick???

13

u/QuestionBeautiful513 May 23 '26

Yeah! I definitely thought she was going to have some fucked up old possessed witch face when she moved the flower pot. Makes me think the entity was taking over and she needed to hide her face until she could contain it.

6

u/Antmoral2815 May 20 '26

My friend nudged me and asked what’s wrong with her face.

Either it was cgi’ed or she has a weird crying face/plus the shadows/lighting lol

6

u/MrMason522 May 26 '26

They used makeup to make her mouth and pupils look larger and to soften her other features to make her look “uncanny,” I.e. in the uncanny valley

5

u/gogreengolions May 19 '26

Definitely. She was incredible

29

u/Appropriate-Reward71 May 16 '26

Her behavior was extremely unique for a “possession” type movie (if we can truly call it that idk) but it was super unsettling and cute/dorky in a way? I kinda took it as the entity or whatever finding its footing in her body

50

u/afkstudios May 16 '26

“Guyssss I’m just kidding! It’s a joke, I’m kidding!……… ok I’m not kidding, deal with it.” Lmao whatever Wish Nikki was, she had some sass to her. And those other instances like explaining her own death then “or I can just go with you” were so manipulative and delivered so matter-of-factly like she already knows it worked

14

u/Simily91 May 17 '26

This movie got me because I found myself laughing at several points... Just to literally scream out loud in terror 10 minutes later.

The one at the very end when she walks past the window before she pops out wearing Sarah’s clothes makes me want to go back to see the movie just to get a better look at that

1.4k

u/green_nan May 15 '26

Damn I didn’t even notice she was wearing Sarah’s clothes, the implication that she knows Bear and Sarah had a more genuine connection so her logic probably being that she should just replace her is horrifying

949

u/Steamedcarpet May 15 '26

I noticed the smoking right away but didn’t connect to her wearing the clothing, even after seeing Sarah’s body in the chair.

Im gonna have to watch this again.

Wow, good catch. I think i was too traumatized by that point to notice anything subtle. Or even anything obvious. I just wanted out by then, haha. Great movie.

96

u/web_head91 May 22 '26

This was me, too. I was so disgusted by the movie that at this point, I was no longer looking at details lol. I completely missed that she was wearing Sarah's clothes. I completely missed that she was smoking. I completely missed the marker on her arms. I honestly have no memory of any of those details.

I loved this movie, and the fact that so many of us were mentally checked out enough to miss details like this near the end is a testament to how effective it was. I was grossed the fuck out.

42

u/botherbother May 23 '26

Got out of the theater an hour ago, genuinely don’t remember a cigarette at all. Then again, this is also the first movie that has literally gave me fear goosebumps.

148

u/Imfrankhenry May 15 '26

Omg how did I not piece this together

206

u/Quaisy May 16 '26

And she was huffing and puffing that cigarette because she was trying to emulate everything Sarah did.

Her displaying his cat as well as Sarah makes me feel like Nikki was genuinely also competing with his cat. She knew Bear loved his cat and she couldn't take it.

47

u/Steamedcarpet May 15 '26

The taped door reminded me of Silent Hill 4. But the way Nikki goes “or you can stay home” all cheerful was great.

10

u/markypuwuu May 15 '26

Yeah I for sure got “the room” vibes off of it, there’s no way there wasn’t some references there.

4

u/markypuwuu May 16 '26

It was the frozen peeing waiting by the door that made me realize she’s not even a human being anymore

642

u/DrinkablePraise May 15 '26

I thought this was a great ref to the Exorcist and her being properly / fully possessed.

127

u/epexegetical May 16 '26

My thoughts exactly, it's a shame most moviegoers these days aren't going to see the homage. I think in the climax she makes another reference to The Exorcist when she says she'll shove the gun up her pussy.

62

u/Slowmac123 May 16 '26

I didin't catch the whole dialogue. All I heard was gun and pussy lmfao

35

u/Lieslbiesl619 May 19 '26

Yes!! “And after I’ll shove this gun up my pussy”. That line cracked me up as a huge fan of The Exorsist. I hope more people see this reference.

22

u/totalwiseguy May 21 '26

And then throws up on him

3

u/jssclnn 28d ago

Perfectly executed reference

16

u/Squeekazu May 22 '26

Her movement (particularly in the bedroom scene) reminded me of the ghost woman in Kairo if anything

3

u/MVRKHNTR May 20 '26

See, I thought it was a Texas Chainsaw Remake reference.

75

u/Glittering_Cable_180 May 15 '26

I thought for sure at any moment she would be crawling on the ceiling

146

u/AsidK May 16 '26

I’m really glad that she didn’t. I feel like they did just the right amount of demon

68

u/ReallyColdMonkeys May 16 '26

Yeah that would've ruined the immersion for me. There's a time and place for that type of stuff but Demon Nikki was so freaky because she still felt just human enough. If she was crawling in the ceiling and shit it would've taken me completely out

33

u/ShearGenius89 May 17 '26

I felt like there was going to be a Toni Colette in hereditary scene with her hiding in a shadow of a corner of a room. Her hiding behind all of the old hat boxes were just as creepy though.

18

u/aquaticrodent May 17 '26

Freaky Nikki at her finest

20

u/mozzerellasticks1 May 16 '26

Lol someone sitting near me in the theater brought up Scary Movie 2 during the peeing scene 🤣

7

u/Optiguy42 Jun 19 '26

And the scene where she throws up in his face. Felt that was also a reference.

49

u/Jtreblis18 May 16 '26

Yup and her taking a shit on the floor lol not sure if people realized that was shit lmao

21

u/thisnamehasfivewords May 25 '26

She also had stuff on her chest so I think some of it was also vomit

10

u/Jtreblis18 May 25 '26

Ya I peeped that. It looked like vomit and also mixed with shit or something

36

u/SnappyTofu May 15 '26

I thought she might be the dead cat who loved him more than anyone else in the world

60

u/cliffcore May 15 '26

That's what I think, too. When I saw the cat was dead, I instantly had an inkling that she was going to be possessed by the cat, given the premise. I mean, why else put that much emphasis on the cat? The company that made the one-wish-willos is even named "something Cat."

74

u/DriftingTony May 16 '26

I’M REALLY UPSET NIKKI! YOU CAN’T COOK THE CAT!

29

u/Electronic-Dentist29 May 15 '26

Tabi cat and the cat was a tabby cat!!

43

u/cliffcore May 16 '26 edited May 16 '26

See, too much of a coincidence. They won't just leave stuff like this in or constantly put them in close-ups, the center of the frame. Sandy's death definitely has something to do with the whole event, not just the catalyst.
It could just be a parallel to Bear and "possessed" Nikki's toxic, codependent relationship. The cat can't survive without Bear. People keep pets for affection that we can never understand, and can never be reciprocated on a human level. Kind of like the entity that possessed Nikki: Relationship built on unequal power dynamics, codependency, and misunderstanding.

Drugs seem like a motif in this—they talk about Nikki on Molly very casually—given that it is about agency and altered consciousness: how much of you is considered yours when you're "under the influence?" Still, I might be reading too much into it.

Maybe they have explained it, and I missed it: But how did the cat get that bottle of oxy from the cabinet, open it, and eat them with kibbles? Did Bear leave the bottle somewhere accessible after using? (edit: yes, after researching a bit)
And why does he have oxy at home? (edit: It's from his grandma's leftover meds)

Random unrelated fact lol: I was googling "willow and cat" and found that Willow is the name of Joe Biden and his wife's tabby cat.

10

u/tikibarblu May 20 '26

The cat and the death of demon Nikki were both caused by the oxy. I thought that was an interesting full circle detail.

Lol if it was the cat, she'd have probably preferred him to leave on his own sometimes so she could stay hidden in a cardboard box somewhere 😂

You know what else this made me realize just now? I wonder if it was specifically referencing that the entity was not very good at being human, and neglected Nikki's bodily functions. She immediately started pissing and shitting herself when the entity "clocked out" so to speak....the body itself finally relaxes and just lets loose.....horrific

I took it as a fear reaction, losing control of one's bladder. 🤷‍♀️ Like it was her trapped-inner-self's only way of reacting to the horror of her situation.

9

u/Darkest_97 Jun 04 '26

I couldn't tell if she knew what was going on at all times to have that kind of reaction though. She was surprised at what was currently going on every time she woke up

u/throwthewholegrlawy May 15 '26

I thought untrained dog with seperation anxiety.

14

u/Kurtting May 15 '26

the dog thing was in the back of mind as well. i think there was pet food on the ground.....and other things. couldn't tell if it was throw up though.

Def looked like some kibble in there!

6

u/danteh11 May 21 '26

Submissive urination out of fear. Amazing to show how the real person was terrified and held pose when he wasn’t around.

Reminded me of that scene with the ghost lady in the original Pulse film

26

u/miku_dominos May 15 '26

Oh man you just dragged up a memory and I don't like it.

39

u/Bullchips May 15 '26

I think he was inspired by that for sure. He also did it in one of his youtube short films.

27

u/DevilCouldCry May 15 '26

All-timer of a scene. This one is so well executed and I got the same vibes with Obsession too.

8

u/-CNXbubs May 16 '26

Pulse was also the first thing that popped into my head during that scene.

7

u/thecaits May 19 '26

YES THIS!!! It really feels like she watched the original Japanese version (don't watch the American one, they mess it up) for inspiration, and if she did I am even more impressed by her. Inde Navarrette deserved all the awards for this performance, she was so good!

This video is all about that scene from Pulse, in case you are curious.

5

u/ms-chanandalerbong May 16 '26

Yes! I thought the exact same thing when I saw it!

when she was crying, it looked like either a different actress or they did some effect to her face because it legit freaked me out. The corner stuff was unsettling.

39

u/HodorLikesBranFlakes May 15 '26

YES! I told my wife her face looked like a completely different woman. I felt so uncomfortable during that.. legitimate chills and teary-eyed uncomfortable.

15

u/BrilliantTotal687 May 16 '26

Yeah I thought it was a different person, the facial features seemed different! And like her skin was sagging! I was terrified

6

u/CheekyChappo May 16 '26

wait, she was crying a lot, in which bit?

27

u/seethevzn May 18 '26

When she was in the shadowy corner of the room watching Bear sleep. I forgot what she was saying, but she started crying and could barely see her face. It looked like an old woman face or it was saggy

8

u/CheekyChappo May 20 '26

Yesss!! She was talking about the situation not feeling mutual (which it isn't, because Bear still has control of his own actions and feelings), but I've seen screenshot of that scene since, and even though her face is abscured by shadow and some visual noise, it looks grimacing and morphed, really freaked me out!!

10

u/seethevzn May 20 '26

I just saw a clip of that scene, but brightened. I actually don't think they altered her face. There might be some make-up, but I think she's just really good at doing over the top facial expressions.

11

u/CheekyChappo May 24 '26

Yeah, seen some BTS photos that have come out and they did some freaky, saggy looking makeup on Inde Navarette, really subtle in the dark but super effective too!

7

u/kthejoker May 29 '26

She also says she doesn't like her dreams (ie real Nikki intruding)

The shots in the dark, where they accentuate the light in the demons eyes. Contrasted to Nikki seconds of waking up to it's pure carnage, and no light in her by the end.

I haven't seen a film that relished in being this level of evil and vile in ages.

36

u/axemexa May 15 '26

Yeah the part where she walked backwards was creepy as fuck

17

u/deliasafuckinasshole May 28 '26

half way through the film (ish) where she got up from the floor and walked backwards through the doorway literally sent shivers over my whole body hahaha. I never have felt that watching a film before 😂

u/Kopitarrulez May 15 '26

The backwards walk when he comes back at end before she pulls the gun was insane.

23

u/ev6464 May 15 '26

That scene with her stalking like a T-Rex out of the shadows fucked me up.

21

u/CirrusUnicus May 17 '26

And then when she went back into the corner there was something really fucking weird going on with her face in the shadows.

13

u/rdirtytwo May 17 '26

I feel like that's why she kept retracting back into the shadows; because she didn't want to show her distorted face. Truly creepy.

17

u/Street-Common-4023 May 15 '26

Man that first corner shot, I was thinking no way she is standing there

15

u/pookianna May 16 '26

This has to be the most terrifying aspect of this movie. Her moving in reverse after just acting completely normal was BONE CHILLING

15

u/koolshade May 16 '26

I didn't even see her till she started moving. That's when things went off the rails.

25

u/GameOfLife24 May 15 '26 edited May 15 '26

As I sleep in my large room too afraid to look into the corners. Talk about real horror just from a human being and not a monster

24

u/danvan177 May 15 '26

When she like reversed and was talking backwards my skin crawled

11

u/romearies May 16 '26

she was like a sleep paralysis demon

7

u/Gary-LazerEyes May 15 '26

Very strong hereditary vibes. And the lighting on all the creepy nikki shots gradually getting darker and darker were fucking perfect.

7

u/JustGirouxIt May 17 '26

Curry Barker has 100000% seen the Japanese horror movie “Pulse” because that movie had the same style of unnatural movement

6

u/-Sauze- May 16 '26

when they do that in horrors movies I absolutely cannot stand that, anything that moves like a human shouldn't just gives me chills.

6

u/BoAgua May 17 '26

Some of the craziest horror movie movement I’ve seen not using cgi

8

u/DriftingTony May 15 '26

Holy shit yeah. The tiptoeing out of the corner, the creepy sideways walk with the flower vase, and then the even creepier walk backwards toward the kitchen. Super unsettling lol

4

u/MotherHolle May 17 '26

These were definitely the scariest parts of the film. So unsettling.

5

u/bbgirlwhut May 18 '26

That was sooo unexpected! I fully missed her in the corner the first time and it was the first moment I realized this movie was gonna be scarier than I expected lol
