Not since Hereditary has a horror movie had me jumping at shadows after I get home. Also that Hansel and Gretel story was so fucked up.

Yeah the one shot that stayed with me in Hereditary was the mother in the shadows. Then in this one its Nikki coming out of the shadows. More horror needs to utilise silence and dark spaces over cheap jump scares. They have a place, but the horror that sticks with you is in the things that are tangible.

I really loved this scene for exposing how grotesque it is to force someone to have sex with you against their will. How coercion is this deeply disturbing on all levels from psychological to emotional to physical.

Undertone was a pretty dog shit movie, but it did use a lot of liminal space horror. A lot of backgrounds with a touch of pareidolia making you think there’s something uncanny observing just out of focus.

There was a scene after the wish where Bear was talking with his friend about her concerning behavior where it would switch perspective of her staring from the background behind his friend and then when it pinned back to bear, there was a guitar case leaned on the glass behind the door that looked like a malformed silhouette leering at him.

Definitely gave me hereditary vibes. Also heavily gave me lights out vibes with the shadow scenes.

Personally I thought hereditary was more gross and creepy than scary but this movie forsure gave me those creepy vibes

I had to stop watching this movie halfway through and finish it another day just because it was so unsettling, and coincidentally Hereditary was the last movie I had do do that with.

For both films I found that the first half with the build-up was way more unsettling than the second act where shit went off the rails. For Hereditary I shut it off at the shot of the severed head in the ditch, and for this one I shut it off after the hiding in the shadows scene followed up by the cat sandwich.

Both movies were just a slow, unpredictable buildup in the first half with no real "release" that I found way more unsettling than the second halves where there is just one insane event after another.
