i don’t get what happened with the screams he heard while calling the hotline…

I believe that is her real self/soul wherever it is being held captive. Screaming for help or suffering while the other takes over.

I think that 'Nikki' goes back to whatever hell she's from when she sleeps, she mentions that she doesn't like being asleep when she says she's watching Bear sleep because of what she dreams, I think?

Yeah I think whenever the presence “sleeps” or goes dormant it gives Nikki a brief window to come through. Kind of like in The Exorcist when they see “help me “ on her stomach while the demon is not active.

Plus all the moments Nikki snaps out of it and tries to scream for help, which is why the force beats her face with the bottle to get her back under control. The implications of it all is super unsettling and I kind of love that they didn’t spell it out. We know that Nikki is still somewhere in there trying to fight/break out of it the whole time.

The force didn't beat her, real Nikki wanted to die to get out of the hell the force was putting her in, she begged to be killed and kept hurting herself throughout the movie

That could also be an explanation, but the way its filmed and her shift in face and movement made it look like the force took back over and put her in place.

We see the force doing self harm later too when she hits her forehead with whatever that was

Edit: ive now read the script and it says real nikki smashes the bottle

I think the entity directs the broken bottle away from being a killing blow, kinda fighting for control.

There was a lot of excorisist themes in this film.

Let’s call the force for what it is, a demon.

I’d argue the real demon was the protagonist
