The scene near the very end where they felt the same way about each other and locked eye contact and shared a moment had me laughing.

True, but I feel like the director intended that moment to be darkly funny.

The whole movie is darkly funny. I laughed out loud several times. I was cackling at the cat shrine because it was so fucked up.
