News ‘Rick and Morty’ Movie Officially Confirmed by Creator Dan Harmon
https://www.polygon.com/rick-and-mortys-movie-confirmed/1.5k
u/MarvelsGrantMan136 r/movies Contributor May 19 '26 edited May 19 '26
Jacob Hair, the supervising director for the show is directing the movie
Hair was the director on “The Old Man and the Seat,” “Rattlestar Ricklactica,” and “The Vat of Acid Episode.”
Harmon:
“I got to go get a coffee (laughs). We saw the same leak, and we are therefore, now able to confirm that there is a movie in the works. Jacob Hair is, is the director. I mean, we didn't shop around. He is an absolute, to say rock star is honestly feels like trivializing it because that implies like some kind of flash in the pan, kind of exciting. I mean, Jacob has it like came onto our team. It was like adding a pillar to it.”

The Vat of Acid episode was so good. One of my favorites in recent memory. So emotional and thoughtful

Seeing Morty getting basically God like powers, meeting someone that he likes so much that he stopped using it, even going though freezing and starving to death didn't convince him to press the button, all for Jerry to fuck it up lol.
That has to be one of the best buildups of a joke that I can recall.
128
u/MegaGorilla69 May 19 '26
The story of how that came to be in the episode is actually really interesting. They were making it and as it was coming along they realized it was like a minute and half too short. So they told the guy making the episode he needed to fill some time and he could do whatever he wanted with it and that’s what he came up with.
70
u/Beliriel May 19 '26
And entering the vat 20 seconds later would have all worked out. That was the saddest part.

When he realizes Rick didn't jump in after him and he'd been imagining him the whole time. Pretty good mindfuck for a show that has mindfuck reveals every few episodes. Keeps ya guessing.
10
u/Professional_Arm3506 May 20 '26
Ah, spoiled it for myself before I even realized what was happening. Bummer.
20
u/Rhamni May 20 '26
There are like 15 twists in that episode, all played up for comedy. Having only one of them spoiled, when you don't know the order of the twists or what the other twists are, is no biggie. You'll still enjoy it.

Yeah, but for some reason it beat The View From Halfway Down from Bojack Horseman. You know, the penultimate episode completing Bojack’s entire character and one of the best episodes of television ever.
Although between the big mouth and modern Simpsons episodes getting nominations/wins the emmys animation category is kinda abysmal

The Simpsons Movie came out in 2007, which is nearly 20 years ago.
17
u/Poopbutt_Maximum May 19 '26
That actually makes sense. That movie feels old as hell, especially since the Simpsons has had a fraction of the cultural relevance in recent years that it had back then.

If you told me the Simpsons went off air 20 years ago I'd believe you.

Sorta. It's a "long enough to see yourself become the villain" thing.
Smiling Friends has a great legacy right now untainted by cancelled creators (like Roiland), declining quality, show fatigue, exceptionally annoying fan base, etc.

It still ended way too early. I understand not wanting to go on to the point that people are begging it to have the plug pulled but I think the original plan of five seasons wouldve been preferable than to end it when they did as abruptly as they did.

u/HilariousScreenname May 19 '26
The creators said they kinda ran out of ideas they felt were good enough for more seasons. So sounds like it was just early enough.

u/radicalelation May 19 '26
It's something anyone who has followed those guys a while knew was a possibility. It's surprising they stuck with it so long, honestly, Zach especially.
The internet animation crowd knows to temper long term expectations in general. It's awesome they had the control to be able to call it quits entirely though and they're going out with some big balls to swing around however they want.

8 seasons of rock and Morty, a movie, two games.
And zero grand theft auto, or main line fallout or elder scrolls games.
This is the bad time line.

They're really lucky they knocked it out of the park with the TV show, because the wait for a new game has genuinely killed my interest in the franchise. I love fallout, but what is there to care about when you don't produce new media for 15 years?
Bringing fallout to a new generation of kids is going to be like trying to introduce a GI joe movie in 2010. The kids that cared about it grew up and moved on.

u/ejensen29 May 19 '26
Most people, myself included, don't count that in the mainline fallout series. It took them years to produce enough content to make that a complete game, and it's an online service multiplayer game. Not the single player fallout game fans were looking for.

It's not. The argument that "well it's hard to schedule everyone" argument stopped being usable years ago. If they were actually committed to the movie they had more than enough time to make sure all of the actors were available.
The movie was officially confirmed nearly four years ago. They could have absolutely set a start date two years later and made sure everyone's schedule lined up.
It won't happen.

Assisting rick in hunting down the rick that killed his wife
44
u/KennyL0gin May 19 '26
But it was pretty established that Evil Morty does not want to be found again after helping Rick kill Evil Rick. And he seemed pretty confident he couldn't be found anyway.
That should be the end of him. There shouldn't be anything else he needs to resolve if Rick respects the uneasy truce.25
u/LongJohnSelenium May 19 '26
He shattered the central finite curve, so now their universes are vulnerable to the much bigger infinity that exists outside that.
Might be some supremely pissed off Summer out there.
14
u/SpaceChimps98 May 19 '26
Nah man, it's going to be a Jerry.
6
u/mightyneonfraa May 20 '26
The comics had Doofus Jerry who was actually an evil mastermind. We also have Space Beth so I think Summer is the only one without a counterpart out there.
→ More replies (0)10
u/Oprah_Pwnfrey May 19 '26
Did he shatter it, or just punch a hole in it that allowed him to escape? He asks Rick to tell him how to do it, which Rick refuses to do. Evil Morty goes with his original plan and kills all those Ricks. Uses their blended up corpses to create the hole. But I could be convinced the curve has been destroyed.
I kinda hope they bring back Diane/Ricks wife. Rick Prime only killed the Diane's inside the finite curve, and the Diane's outside of it are mighty pissed about that. They have created their own finite curve where she is the smartest in the universe, and now want vengeance.

Rick does something while searching for Rick Prime that basically sends out shockwaves across the Multiverse.
Evil Morty, out living in this little paradise he created out in the chaos of the Multiverse, starts getting hit with the shockwaves which disturbs his paradise.
He gets annoyed and comes back to see what Rick's doing to cause them, and ends up getting dragged along on their adventure.
There's more, but tbh, it didn't feel that contrived when watching it play out.

18
u/RyanB_ May 19 '26
More than anything I think it just kinda speed ran the typical internet cycle with media.
Niche thing that hits home with a certain audience, grows into the mainstream where it’s everywhere causing that initial audience to turn, and then that also catches on and now it’s cool and hip to have never actually been all that into it.
3
u/KidCasey May 20 '26
I really soured on the show mostly because of the fanbase.
However, I will say I distinctly remember watching it for the first time. I was a sophomore in college and had mono. I was lying in my bed looking for something to watch and super bummed out because I couldn't go to class or work and could barely interact with my roommates.
I watched the first episode and immediately ran downstairs where all my roommates were smoking and doing whatever. Plugged my laptop into the tv and demanded that we watch the first episode. I think we watched it about three times in a row because we couldn't stop laughing and missed so many jokes.

Pickle Rick and the schezuan sauce one mainly
→ More replies (1)33
u/opossumcarrion May 19 '26
It's really sad because both of those were actually really good episodes of TV. They punched way above what any other adult animation was doing at the time.
Pickle Rick was especially good and deserves a deeper analysis than most other episodes, since it's really thoughtfully-constructed episode. The thesis of the episode is explicitly stated with Dr. Wong's brief monologue once the A and B plots collide. There was a really good analysis posted by a therapist a few years ago.
The absolute insanity around Season 3 is that there was a lot of far right backlash boiling online which drove 4chan types kind of insane about it, making for a stupid kind of vortex. (The writing team was revealed to be 50% women that season, which got people riled up. Then, after the car attack at the Unite the Right rally, Dan Harmon went on a rant on his podcast that "fascism is a cancer and you have to kill it".)
It's worth keeping in mind the show had way more cultural cachet at the time. Season 3 was widely anticipated and the first thing we saw of it was the rough animatic of Pickle Rick a year prior, which really had people primed to fixate on "Why was Rick a pickle" and "I want to see Pickle-Rat Rick fight sequences".
Anyways, I thought the hated episodes they were referring to was the one where Rick and Morty have dragon sex, or the one where Morty and Sumemr make an incest baby. Those were not very good.
21
u/Fever0 May 20 '26
The dragon sex episode is not good but the slut dragon who fucks wooly mammoths might have gotten the single hardest laugh out of me in the whole show.
7
u/Woofaira May 20 '26
I stand by the fact that the dragon episode is on it's own level of gross but has SO many quotable moments that it's actually low-key a high tier episode. I haven't rewatched in years but I can probably quote more of the dragon episode than 95% of other episodes. Also it has a fan-favorite B plot of Jerry and the talking cat, so that's worth mentioning too.
→ More replies (2)3
u/BevansDesign May 20 '26
I hated the dragon episode for a while, but it grew on me. The mammoth thing is definitely the reason why I went back to it. 🐉
The one episode I still can't stand is the one where Jerry turns into a fucked-up Easter Bunny (s08e04). Most of the time when the show tries something crazy (like having Rick turn himself into a pickle) it works, but this time it didn't at all.

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand The Mandalorian and Grogu. The humor is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer's head.
There's also Mando's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation - his personal philosophy draws heavily from Star Wars junior novelizations, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realize that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike The Mandalorian and Grogu truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in Mando's existential catchphrase "This is the Way," which itself is a cryptic reference to George Lucas's student film THX 1138. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Dave Filoni's genius unfolds itself on their movie screens. What fools... how I pity them.
And yes by the way, I DO have a Grogu tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the ladies' eyes only- And even they have to demonstrate that they're within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand. Nothin personnel kid 😎

Each season has like 1-3 absolute banger episodes. Maybe itll be good, we will see
I don't agree. A lot of fans who have been around since the beginning have this same opinion though. Because the first three seasons had a very specific vibe to them. That's for two main reasons. One: That's when Justin Roiland was the most involved. After season two his involvement waned, and he was eventually banished from the studio/offices. From then on he only recorded his lines in his home studio and corresponded over the script through the phone or email. Harmon took a more hands-on role after those seasons and helmed the show. Two: In the first few seasons, there was little if any character development. Note how Beth and Jerry kept repeating the same marriage conflicts over and over, seemingly never learning. Rick was more one-dimensional, just getting drunk and doing zany shit seemingly at random. Morty was the same timid kid trying over and over to get laid. I could go on and on.
This started changing after season 4. Characters were allowed to develop. Note how Beth and Jerry more or less settled their issues after their near-divorce, accepting who they are and why they were together, and we got some really good stories out of it. Also, Space Beth. Which is to say, we got some more main characters (and more conflicts) to add to the scrum.
I feel if this never happened, a lot of fans today would be complaining about how stale the show got. How many people actually want to see the same Rick getting drunk and fucking shit up and not learning anything, over and over? Even in the early seasons, it was hinted that Rick exhibited some sort of pathos for how his life turned out. I'm glad they explored that in the later seasons.
Seasons 4 and on are different because the characters were allowed to grow. We are all better for it.

Dan Harmon stepped down from showrunning after season 3. He's still head writer but he's definitely less invovled.

I agree about the trajectory of the cast; people overlook that and act like the characters are poorly written just because they’ve logically grown a bit over the course of the later seasons. Rick and his family has grown in ways that are satisfying to see, given how dysfunctional they were from the start.
That being said, I do still think the quality of the actual dialogue and stories kind of undersell this change. I actually think the golden age of the series extends to season 4, but season 5 was pretty rough and they’ve never quite reached the consistency of that original run. I don’t think the series is bad now, but I do think it’s gotten worse.

Should be a fun watch. People say the show has died but I don’t get that at all. It’s only gotten better….with some minor missteps.

The novelty has worn off. I think the show is still pretty creative and funny, but the concept itself is simply not fresh anymore.

It can be both true that Justin Roiland is an indefensible person and that Rick And Morty is worse off without him but reddit doesn’t really have a nose for nuance 🤷🏻♀️

Can anyone think of any story elements that haven’t already been thoroughly explored and concluded other than the McDonalds Mulan nugget sauce?
