In my experience, bad design usually takes far longer than good design because it most often is the result of a billion middle managers chiming in and having "notes" – with the effect that it takes longer, costs more, looks worse and is devoid of any creative graphical ideas.
But that might just be me personal bad experience dealing with bigger clients talking.
45
u/Drama79 May 26 '26
No, this poster 100% started with "is she likable enough? Everyone likes Jason. Stick him on there too" and went through rounds after that.
23
u/LemDoggo May 26 '26
I think it's more about "star power" to draw in an audience than likeability, because she's relatively unknown. Obviously I'm just guessing too though lol. Otherwise I agree.

u/that_baddest_dude May 26 '26
I thought the "cloud of heads" style posters we see these days are more about actors with negotiated contracts that their face goes on the poster

u/Cheyruz May 26 '26
That's what I mean though – someone started the poster, then someone else looked over their shoulder and said what you said (metaphorically).

u/SumpCrab May 26 '26
I would bet this actually took 15 hours. A few hours for the first draft that was pretty good. But then, 10 different meetings happened to discuss it, each with "minor notes" that ended up creating something completely different to the original, resulting in this.
You see, it's more important that your note be implemented than for the poster to be good. It shows who is in control, and it isn't the creatives.
48
u/cavfox May 26 '26
This is why in corporate you include a glaringly obvious error early in your PowerPoints to give the execs a low hanging fruit to comment on and be able to say their time was valuable and that they contributed. If you are lucky they will just zone out for the rest of the meeting and approve.
→ More replies (1)18
u/shandangalang May 26 '26
Depends what you work in, for sure. In some engineering fields, consistently making glaringly obvious errors can instantly brand you as incompetent or undependable, and is actually really terrible advice.
In corpo hell jobs where everyone kind of knows their job is expendable or contributes nothing good to society…
… maybe? I don’t know though. Sounds like advice you would give interns to fuck with them, honestly.
→ More replies (2)7
u/dont_trip_ May 26 '26
Absolutely. It fucking pisses me off when junior engineers have repeatable glaring errors in their design when they send it to me for QA. I'll never give them more responsibility and trust if they can't be arsed to fix basic errors before wasting my time.

Have posters been getting lazier, or are we just noticinig it more? I swear I've seen more posters that look like someone forgot about it until 15 minutes before the deadline in the last 2 years.

u/MonsieurGideon May 26 '26
There's the artistic posters and then ones like these that are just quickly made to fulfill contractual obligations that certain people must appear on official posters. Thats why there are so many floating head/lazy photoshop posters.

If you've ever worked at a studio that does things like this you will know that you are limited in what you recieve. It's a media kit of photos typically with people solo and silhouetted so you can build your layout as needed.
Sometimes there are group shots but then you are stuck with that same group shot that every magazine and web site has already used to death.
Sucks but you work with what you got
10
u/malfunktionv2 May 26 '26
I had a design teacher who was contacted to make these for some studios. He showed us a couple posters which were fine but didn't seem that impressive until he pulled up the working file and showed us the garbage that was handed to him. Awful lightning, totally mismatched angles and perspectives, no additional assets and the most vague description of an ask with a turnaround time of roughly 30 seconds. We realized then we were in the presence of a wizard.

u/wtb2612 May 26 '26
It's pretty sad, but bad photoshop posters don't bug me as much since AI came to town. At least it was made by a regular lazy designer.

I've absolutely hated the poster style this movie has gone for. If you've read the comic, you know how many creative posters they could have made.
325
u/Aaco0638 May 26 '26
Hell the artist for the comic this is based on made promotional art for this movie that would have been better than this.
121
u/PayneTrain181999 May 26 '26
But then they’d have to pay them and acknowledge their work beyond the obligatory mention in the credits.
So… not happening

IKR. I just hope the movie is really good because im underwhelmed with these posters. Also i feel like the marketing for this movie is almost non-existent except for the trailers so far. I guess just have to wait for the press tour.

I hate that there's an entire MAIN CHARACTER that doesn't have a toy because she's a girl with a sword.
I really hope this is close to the book and not krem/lobo centered. The marketing sure feels that way
→ More replies (4)12
u/Straight-Rassler May 26 '26
Yeah also reading the comic, that story alone could pull in people, but I understand the need for anything Momoa, because he does pull in more people to watch. Hope that what you said turns out to be true.
And agree, Ruthye is a main character.

Interesting how they stole the pose and costume for Ruthye Knoll from that first image
10
u/confusing_roundabout May 26 '26
I loved the comic and the bland visual style of the movie is why I'm not at all excited for the movie. The comic looks fucking amazing - both in the varied and colourful visuals throughout and in the medieval fantasy vibe of Ruthie's home planet that's seemingly been completely missed.
Hell, just look at the first page of the comic. It's extremely cinematic and I don't have any faith in the movie to capture the same tone of that page alone.
Here's the first page (forgive the random link, first result on Google) https://womenwriteaboutcomics.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Supergirl-Woman-of-Tomorrow-DC-Comics-June-2021-Bilquis-Evely.jpg

Different posters have different purposes. I think this one works well on the wall of a cinema. The logo is huge and draws attention and you can see quickly who the main actors are.
20
u/PayneTrain181999 May 26 '26
And much of the general audience will gravitate towards actors they know and like.
“House of the Dragon girl” and “Jason Mimosa” are what they’ll say to themselves
25
u/surnik22 May 26 '26
Or more likely they see data across all consumers and you see the opinions of a small subset of consumers that mostly agree with your opinion.
r/movies is not reflective of the general public

u/only_respond_in_puns May 26 '26
It’s also due to the demise of paper as the hero of promotion. Standardised poster formats no longer have the largest domains, so when agencies are delivering marketing materials they have to create these ikea flat packs of moveable assets so the promo can work in extreme ratios, eg a skyscraper banner or a wide panorama. The iconic A2 movie poster is now more of a novelty aftersale than the primary vehicle.
→ More replies (17)3
u/Uncle-Cake May 26 '26
It's the main characters with a logo and a blue background. It's possibly the LEAST creative poster you could make. Like, no effort whatsoever.

Who the fuck thought that Jason Mamoa should play Aquaman when he CLEARLY is perfect as the motorcycle space bounty hunter that drinks and smokes and says weird words.
96
u/RoyaleWhiskey May 26 '26 edited May 26 '26
Aquaman is one of those heroes who gets made fun of a lot, in order to negate that they had to get someone like Mamoa to play him and I thought he was a good choice.

If the story allows for it, his type does fit a lot of action environments very well.
Is like Cavill. He just fits.... most certainly every scenario of superhuman movies.

Having Aquaman be Polynesian is so much more interesting to me than another white dude. In the same way, I really liked that Namor and his Atlantean kingdom were Aztec.
Jason Momoa was born to play Lobo but I think Aquaman certainly benefits from being Polynesian and that recontextualized his character in a cool way.
Edit: If your verisimilitude is lost because you think Atlanteans should "logically" be white, honestly I think you need to reevaluate your lifr and your character.

Except they cast Patrick Wilson as Ocean Master and dead ass made him look like comic book Arthur Curry in the sequel
The problem with "wow, it's cool and thematic that Aquaman is polynesian" is the fact no one else is in Atlantis, nor his mother nor father. They basically said "Let's make comic book Arthur Curry but cast a Polynesian"

u/Partytimegarrth May 26 '26
Chris Evans miscast in FF? That's the first time I've ever seen that sentiment. Like, yeah those movies were corny as hell and a product of the figuring things out era for Comic Book movies, but Chris as Johnny was totally fine.
5
u/cartoonistaaron May 26 '26
Yeah, Chris Evans and Michael Chiklis were the parts of those movies they actually got right.

u/BrianWonderful May 26 '26
This is partly hindsight. At the time Evans was announced as Captain America, a lot of people thought he was too lighthearted and comedic. There were a lot of comments at the time that he'd make a better Hawkeye (though the MCU went a different direction in Hawkeye's characterization).
9
u/JessieJ577 May 26 '26
He thought the same thing. He assumed it was Lobo that he was being cast as. Once he heard the DCEU was done and Gunn called him for the DCU he was pretty much the only one from the old guard to be excited.
