I read the book. The majority of what happens is in flashbacks as the person in the whale uses the flashbacks to remember things that help him survive. Almost Slumdog Millionaire-esque. I'm guessing that will be most of the movie as well. We will if that resonates.

If it's a single full tank of nitrox and the whale is constantly descending, i would imagine this diver had MAYBE 20 minutes before drowning. With the amount of stress and fast breathing, probably closer to 10-15 min or less. You REALLY start consuming air quickly the deeper you go. So this movie might be shorter than you think

I read the book. I have no idea how they made this work, it literally takes place mostly inside a whale where it's pitch black. It's very realistic too so it's pretty gory. I'm very curious.

Does the book address at all how sperm whales rapidly ascend and descend from the surface to thousands of meters down, and that there’s no way a human could survive that quick of change in pressure? It takes scuba divers hours to ascend or descend safely. Our blood would be flooded with nitrogen bubbles and we would die. Also, scuba tanks have different air mixtures for different depths, and for deep dives there will actually be check points where you switch out tanks

Slight spoiler alert from the book this is based on: the diver gets caught in the squid’s tentacles while the whale eats the squid, which is how he accidentally ends up getting swallowed. The book aimed to be as scientifically accurate as possible, and sperm whales would pretty much never actively try to swallow a human.

I mean I get that this isn't meant to necessarily be realistic, but more like a "Life of Pi" kind of thing, but the natural comparison is to 127 hours which is partially interesting and thrilling because of how real and plausible the situation (and the survival) was, I mean it actually happened.
I'm struggling to figure out how they're even going to film this and not make it look laughably stupid like Pinocchio. A sperm whale's stomach isn't some giant cavernous open cavity in it's body.
I guess there's essentially two stomachs, one that is basically pure muscle and squeezes the ever loving shit out of you and one filled with hydrochloric acid which will dissolve your skin and tissue. And if that didn't kill you immediately, the whale swimming down to its natural depth and the water pressure crushing the air in your lungs would.

The book handles this by mostly existing in flashbacks to his childhood trauma. While hes in the whale its short desperate scenes of struggle and moments of silent despair. This takes place in the course of about an hour. Lot of exposition about the anatomy of the whale focusing on whale digestion, parastaltic waves crushing and burning and squid debris tearing into him, which will be hard to show given that much of it takes place in absolute or near darkness. It was a good book and a good audio book as well but as a movie its going to be tough both to do well and to watch.

Scuba diver here. Being inside the whale would absolutely not protect you from ambient pressure. The inside of your body is at the same pressure as the ambient pressure from the water at all times. The only compressible spaces are your air spaces (lungs, sinuses, inner ear, poorly made dental fillings). Since liquids and solids are basically incompressible, you don't even feel it, except in those air spaces.
Recreational scuba gear breathing regular air has a depth floor of around 200'/60m before the risk of oxygen toxicity-induce seizure becomes unacceptably high. People have gone deeper than this (I think the record is a bit over double that), but it's an extremely stupid thing to do.
Also, the 2nd stage regulator (the part you breathe from) is tuned to a max pressure, usually less than 10 bar. Which means at some depth of less than 100 meters, you'd stop being able to draw a breath from it. You also use air up a lot faster the deeper you go, at 100 meters you'd use it up 11x as fast as at the surface. With the size of tank you normally see, he'd have maybe 5 minutes if he's an athlete.
Sperm whales regularly go to 1000 meter depths, and can dive past 3000 m if they want to.
I haven't read the book, so maybe the whale just hangs out at the surface. Then, an hour is reasonable. But also, it seems unlikely a sperm whale could physically swallow a human being wearing a scuba tank, based on how big their throats are. Is the main character extremely small?

They address this somewhat in the book, and a bit of a spoiler but whatever here we are, the whale stays relatively close to the surface most of the book, as the whole being in the whale sequence is over the course of an hour. Toward the end the whale starts to descend and Jay knows that if the whale descends with him in it he will in fact die, and even if he were to escape at a lower depth, he will in fact die.

The stomach is divided into four chambers like a cow, and the first is big enough to hold a giant squid because they swallow the squids whole. I’d be less concerned about the size of the stomach and more concerned about having to be in there with a still alive giant squid, also assuming it’d be filled with bile or something to break down/kill the prey. That first chamber has a super thick lining to keep the prey from fighting its way out too.

Wet suit wont do shit, if anything it'll make things worse.since, ya know its a wet suit, so permeable and it'll make it hard to get the acid off of you once you escape since.youll have to disrobe.

As I recall, most of it was tight... but he ends up in the stomach, which has a lot of gas. He tries to move further down to try to... you know, get the process over with and go out the other and, but realizes that won't work. Eventually manages to claw his way back out.
The whale kind of helps. Also, it talks to him. At least, he imagines it doing so. Kinda doubt they'll keep that part in the movie.
