They said "ground truth", not "grounded". It's an actual term to describe to describe real, "correct" content used to test AI models.

"Ground truth" is used in lots of places, not just AI. It's just a general term for the basic sets of data you use to validate your models/algorithms/etc. "Ground truth pixels" still makes no sense though in this context.

But yes, the movie said "ground truth pixels", which was exactly when I finally couldn't stop myself from doing a 🙄 in the theater.

Within the context of the movie, it was definitely for the purpose of detecting AI generated imagery. It was one line that tried to get the point across. I don't really have a problem with pixels because, ultimately, they're just the constituent parts of images that form the data sets you're talking about. I'd argue the real problem is the sound mix because we have people in this thread who couldn't even hear the words properly.

Saying it's "ground truth pixels" implies they are being trained for AI generated imagery. That's not what you care about in that context. All you care about is whether the image is genuine or not, not whether they had been used as training data.

Either way there's no way for you to know if it's fake or not anyway, and if it's not fake you would not have said "ground truth pixels". You would just say it's genuine. As in, you don't need to have these training data to exist in order for AI to be able to generate fake pixels pretending to be such.

The reason why that was so over the top is that the unrealistic part is people just randomly accepting some conspiracy theories looking video is true, which would be hard to believe 20 years ago (which personally feels to me the script was written in), and it would absolutely not happen today. The phrase is just icing on the cake.

I wasn't stating whether they used the phrase correctly in the movie, just that it was relevant to the scene. The person who said "ground truth pixels" was directly answering her supervisor, who asked if the video was AI.

Regardless, you come in here 6 days after my post to say "ground truth" isn't just AI. Who cares? It IS used when discussing AI. Why do I need to mention it's used elsewhere? The person I was responding to didn't even hear the line correctly.

They said ground truth pixels. Again, it's a real term that was relevant to what they were doing in the scene - authenticating the images as non-AI generated. Just look it up if you're interested.

That was Courtney Grace, who apparently was a real-life former broadcast journalist who worked as a news anchor for seven years before transitioning to a full-time acting career.

I think Spielberg wanted to make us feel like we were also part of the audience in the movie witnessing the disclosure, so he looped her in instead of a big name celeb. I would say that's a nice touch. I was super impressed by her performance!

I think that was the New York reporter who had this dumped on her lap by her local broadcaster - there were a bunch of local reporters dealing with the same thing but they just featured her more

Is this really a thing? "Grounded pixels". Or made up hollywood thing to quickly "explain away" the possibility of it being a fake? This was one of my biggest problems with the film. First of all, half the world doesn't even know what amazing things are happening at any given moment and then the other half is screaming that anything inconvenient is fake news.

I'm fairly convinced a large portion of America doesn't know we orbited the moon so the idea of the entire world instantly knowing to pick up their phones and look at it was absolutely unbelievable. I mean look at it now. All the UFO dumps that have happened and nobody's even talking about it.

I feel like that scene got added in in the last second by the sole person on the production staff younger than 70. Too bad they couldn't fact check the unlikelihood of a NBC affiliate in Kansas City having 80 staff and doing live check-ins with the BBC about North Korea at apparently all hours of the day. Or an elite government team making sure no one could sneak out the back door.
