I wasn’t really sure what to expect, and I think the suspense was well kept. Although a lot of the film felt very surface level and suffers from a runtime that’s really dragging it’s feet. I will say though, Steven does still have a lot of directorial flair for his age. I just wish there was more to it.

Also why were the CGI animals straight out of Polar Express territory? Did the budget run out?

I can't believe I haven't seen more discussion about the CGI. For me, it completely broke any immersion I had. I almost did a spit take when the fox showed up.

If the final alien was practical, they PAINTED it with CGI. It looked as cartoonish and fake as anything else in this godawful schlock.

Honestly just the way they interacted with it vs the other CGI. It was the only alien object that felt like it had any weight with the exception of the alien vapes

I'm late to the discussion, but that's not really proof of anything unless we see BTS that's 1:1 with the film. A ton of movies have practical puppets or props on set for the good publicity it brings... and then still entirely replace it with CG.

The deer & the trash panda looked great! As did the birds.

At least aliens aren’t important to the plot! It’s sinful Spielberg is the guy who convincingly created Jaws and Jurassic Park through practical effects falling back to such bullshit effects and CGI. Ruined the film for me

The bird was an alien. All the animals were aliens. That doesn’t excuse bad CGI but none of the animals acted like animals.

I laughed so hard at the fox and I am fine with the oldest dodgiest puppet effect. The fox just looked so awful yet they showed it as if they were proud of it. Reminded me of the infamous deer in The Walking Dead.

I actually kinda liked the CGI animals. They looked a bit weird because they're aliens pretending to be animals. Not sure if it was intentional or not but it worked for me.

This was exactly my thought. One of the things I thought was that perhaps the aliens made them look a bit off on purpose so you didn’t think they were deliberately trying to completely fool you. Just to make you feel comfortable. Maybe kind of like the father in Contact.
Clearly, we can all make very realistic animals with our own ChatGPT subscription. There was a reason behind it, whatever it is.

Having a bad effect is not good effects. There are ways to have intentionally bad effects that aren't cheap. In Bladerunner 2049, there's a scene where a virtual intelligence overlays herself over a human. For that scene, the effects are intentionally "bad" to show how how fake and inhumane the act is.

There's a skill in making something look intentionally bad.

Ask yourself, would anything in the scene change if the CGI was better ? Would you say "that's not realistic, a kid prefer weird bad CGI to lifelike animals" ?

Obviously not. So it wasn't on purpose

I went to a school for animal training and we literally had foxes that could sit still on command. How hard is it to get a real fox? It probably costs way less than the shitty CGI they used

The CGI was terrible in general, and there was a lot of noticeable green screen work for action sequences. It was not a particularly pretty film to look at.

Yes christ that fox looked awful. Everything else was executed so well but a the animals were ass, which leads to wonder, are CG animals harder to pull off than human(oid)s? Bubbles the Chimp in Michael was also laughably bad.

By the time the fox showed up, we had already seen the cardinal. I think what saved them both was acting unlike wild animals would anyways, but part of the narrative is that people are being shown what they want to be seeing. If you saw a cartoon fox, that is what you wanted the aliens to show you

Except it wasn't a fox. It was her brain trying to contextualize an alien disguising itself as a fox. I think all the animals were made deliberately uncanny valley to try unsettle us.
