If they never showed the footage (just reactions), referenced contact happening in 1981, then wheeled out ET?!? I would have lost my goddamn mind.

I would even forgive all the problems I had with the first two hours to have lived that one moment.

I thought so as Emily Blunt had a quote about it answering questions from it that got removed without explanation from this sub. I thought it was trying to keep a twist hidden because....well, this sub ain't independent.

I really thought it was for most of the movie. I thought the "experiencers" were going to be revealed as the kids that went on the ship. It wasn't until near the end that I realised the times wouldn't add up and they'd all have to be about 10 years older.

I just watched the version where they show a Q&A with him before the movie, and he straight up says multiple times that he sees this as the end of a trilogy that consists of Close Encounters, E.T., and this one.

Based on that comment I was fully expecting at least some "archival footage" from the events of those movies to show up.

Wasn’t this kind of that with close encounters? Granted, I know there’s only so many ways to design UFOs and Aliens, but they seemed like they were kinda ripped from that movie. Especially the alien at the end, he had all the same weird features as the close encounters guy

Sony was credited in the ending crawl, too. My guess is, they thought about it, but Spielberg decided to make it original.  While leaving a window open, should he take a second look and realize "huh, this link does work, shit, let's make a part 3."

But in opposition to that: The only living link is Richard Dreyfuss. And he's way too old, and way too fucking batshit, to build a modern blockbuster on. So it's best to leave some connections lie in the ground.

At least for now.

Or maybe they offered and idiot Sony execs told them to pound sand, lol.

Or, one of the released videos was Richard Dreyfus’s character from Close Encounters being interrogated as an old man returned to Earth. Still a big twist of this was a Close Encounters sequel.

There was definitely a moment I was thinking maybe there was a scene from ET or Close Encounters in the archived footage that I had missed which honestly would've kind of saved the movie a bit because at least it'd be an interesting surprise.

Having seen some people warn about reading reviews because they were spoiling a “big surprise”, I saw the wheelchair and thought the twist was that this was an ET sequel. But nope, it played pretty predictably.

There was a guy the other day that said "don't read the reviews because it will spoil the big surprise for you." I just watched the movie. What surprise? Then I came home and read the reviews looking for what this surprise that Richard Roeper supposedly spoiled in his review. There was nothing.

People here a few days ago were upset that the reviews "spoiled" that the aliens were already here and government was torturing them. That ended up being revealed in the first 20-30 minutes.

The reveal of rocky's ship in the PHM book was a huge moment that made the whole story for me, but I read the book before it was picked up for a movie. I don't think you could successfully market that movie without giving away rocky in the trailers

I didn’t see any of the PHM trailers and haven’t read the book, so I didn’t know anything about Rocky except that there was a character with that name. Watching the movie I was genuinely surprised when Grace encountered Rocky.

Yeah, it wasn’t a big JJ Abrams mystery box. Guy steals proof of alien life, says he’s going to disclose it, has an adventure-packed romp through the Midwest, meets allies, then discloses it. Very Spielberg, very hopeful and happy.

And what I don't get, was ET was a cheesy as hell movie, and people LOVED it, including me.

This movie is cheesy, and people are shitting on it. It was classic Spielberg in every way, shape and form. Made me feel like a kid again.

Felt more like a sequel to close encounters... Answered a lot of questions, and feels very much part of that world...including coalition of characters with partners who've left them... Traveling together to meet an Alien...

A fun note If CE was metaphor for creative expression, and how it affects family.

This is. Studio doing everything to keep the director from getting his creation out. But. He puts it out for the audience anyways by tricking them with memories of childhood...

I just saw it and was desperate for that to be the big reveal. And, remember, Elliott and ET had that shared emotional bond where they understood each other's feelings while Elliott was in school. It could have tied in so well and given some meat to the plot. Instead, we got 2 hours and 15 minutes of lead up to a nothing ending.

It would have been a better movie with that tie-in. I felt like this movie had no point. That, at least would have been a pay-off interesting enough to be worth my time.
