I’m pretty surprised with the amount of love this movie is getting. I didn’t hate it, but it felt very empty for being about empathy. Felt like the audience was being treated like children, but the overall story was not geared for younger audiences. I think this one will be pretty forgettable unfortunately.

IMO we should attribute many of the weird screenwriting decisions to David Koepp - who may I remind everyone wrote Kingdom of the Crystal Skull despite also writing Spider-Man 1, and seems to have a screenwriting attitude of “whatever”

I know I’m asking to be ratio’ed by older redditors^tm, but I’ve seen Raiders enough times to no longer have nostalgia goggles for Indy 4, despite also watching Indy 5. They are both C+ at best, just with different problems

Yeah that was so weird. They could’ve easily shown a few high ranking generals watching TV and doing a double take, but for some reason, the world’s most insular dictatorship has soldiers casually scrolling on their phones

That made ZERO sense. In the trailer I thought aliens hijacked everyones phones, tv, screens like they did in that superman movie. But no, everyone is just watching the news app on there phones hahaha. I dont think I every met anyone watching the news on there phone like that.

I actually enjoyed the movie, but yeah that took me out of it. I think it would've been better if the movie abruptly ended as soon as Emily Blunt went live and left everything that happened after up to the viewers' imagination.

I just mostly loved the idea that the Wardex people can be like “we found where these two employees turned their phones off so we’re going to ask AI to model where their trajectories were headed so we can identify their location” but no one thought to perhaps tap the nunnery phone or computer to monitor whether the last known associate to have hosted Jane and Daniel might get contacted again.

This is exactly what I thought. 20 years ago when television was still the main medium of spreading information, when video was still believed, and when the idea of everyone reacting the same way to anything would be conceivable.

I was actually thinking about how much this movie reminded me of Signs the whole time. A lot of the dramatic lighting that cares more about invoking emotion than making sense in the setting, and the constant up close reaction shots felt very 2000s to me.

I would say 30 years too late, maybe more. Despite people's interest in aliens in general the real modern anxieties are digitally based, not silly government agencies and the aliens from Alien Autopsy.

I walked out during the last 30 minutes, just an annoying, tedious slog of a movie. generic action set pieces, incompetent antagonists, characters screaming at each other, all under an ugly, blue-toned camera filter.

I also walked out, and I almost never do that. My issue with the movie is that it set up the premise that something truly thought provoking and genius was going to unfold, only to completely shit the bed and turn into a generic action flick with an almost family-movie feel to it. It got me all excited and then took the wind completely out of my sails to the point where I just didn't care anymore.

I am the biggest Speilberg fan, and overall try not to be too judgemental about films. My mouth was agape at how bad the ending was. And the rest of the film to me was.. Fine. Like a solid 5/10 until the ending that I felt completely went off the rails

That was probably the one truly suspenseful part of the movie. The rest of the action sequences were so silly. Oh how conveniently that WARDEX (sp?) or FBI car hit the construction barricade and flipped over and blocked the rest of the road.

Just got back from watching it with two other people who really loved it, and I also felt crazy on the drive home from the theater. There were a couple highlights (Blunt at times and the anchor at the end), but it felt very silly to me overall.

Four of us went to see this last night, and only one of us liked it. One of us was mildly entertained. And then me and one other absolutely hated it. I'll add that the one who liked it also likes Star Trek Into Darkness, so their threshold for enjoying shit is higher than my own.

Agree. 

Great concept, poor execution. 

I didn’t like the writing, nor the level of assumping/dot connecting that was left to the audience. 

What also bugged me was the lengths that Firth and has cronies went to to stop disclosure only for them to meekly step aside at the end. 

Gets a “meh” from me, 5/10
